Re: AMF Book Club #2 - The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

I should say that it's a good long while since I read this. What was it in particular about Cohn? I barely remember noticing his Jewishness; just that he seemed to not be fully accepted as "one of the boys" and perhaps took himself a bit too seriously.

Re: AMF Book Club #2 - The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

"Hemingway's ultra-masculine style... " "a very talented artist who I find morally repulsive... " I think there may be a worthwhile debate about whether Hemingway ends up indirectly celebrating these overly macho environments, even by virtue of the fact he keeps returning to the...

I'd add Celine Sciamma's Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - don't know how widely that was shown in the US.

So it's now theoretically possible that the aforementioned artist could have four albums in the top seven, although I expect it'll be three.

Re: AMF Favorite Books Poll: Voting Thread

I'll submit my own list, just for fun. In Scotland, we like to tell ourselves that we have produced a disproportionate volume of important literature. Unlike the claim that we are more socialistic or community-spirited than other parts of the UK, I think this one might be true, but it's impossible t...

First and foremost well done to Listyguy for doing a great job with a project of this size.

Surprised not to see a single person vote for Paradise Lost or The Canterbury Tales.

Re: AMF Favorite Books Poll: THE RESULTS

A little disappointed to see my own favourite, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, miss out. I didn't take part because there are so many of the big classics I haven't read - I might have been more tempted if the format had been us all ranking the same 100 books in order (as far as each of us were able), ...

Re: France - One song per day.

Went to see 'Sage Femme' (The Midwife), starring Catherine Deneuve, which I quite enjoyed, especially the scene featuring this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVkWgksDZDI Been checking out some of his other songs since then - I admit I hadn't heard of him before, but he looks to have been a ho...

Re: 6000 Songs: Antony and the Johnsons

Since I've been on medication I've been much happier overall, but there are occasions when I miss some of the more extreme emotions. This song is one I arguably got more from in my pre-medication days. I still think it's great, though.

Re: Top 50 Dave Grohl Songs (voting starts now!)

I'd always previously thought of Grohl as a nice guy, but wasn't too impressed at a festival in 2011 when he took verbal swipes at a few of the other headline acts for using computers too much - he relies on technology as well - and did exaggerated guitar moves in front of one of the security staff ...

I do, but I'm having a bit of bother finding it or anything similarly representative online... Might have to come back to this.

Hi Romain, I saw Steve Shehan in Paris at the weekend (http://www.newmorning.com/20170415-3654 ... hehan.html) and enjoyed it a lot. Would he be worthy of a mention on this thread?

Fun poll, but the results are rougher than I had realised at first. Initially I was surprised at The Boy With The Thorn In His Side outperforming How Soon Is Now?, so wondered who the biggest fans of the former were. Looking back over individual lists, only three lists rank The Boy ... the higher of...

1. [An author] also begged to know if writer Don De Lillo had been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll hall of fame yet. This was the first one that stuck out to me, as it does seem like a double standard. Musicians can win Literature awards, but authors can't win Music awards. This is a pretty sturdy ...

I never quite got into this album enough to rank each track, but I always considered Free Money the obvious stand-out (although Gloria, with its audacious opening line, would be a good second).
