Re: Reclam's Basis-Diskotheken "Rock und Pop" und "Jazz"

That is true about Nina. I've just personally always considered her to be broadly "jazz", but she was so multi-talented that, like you and Henrik have said, her own genius is her curse. As for the "Hot Fives...", I could see both arguments for and against its inclusion. It would ...

Regarding John Ford, I'm not entirely certain if the reaction was THAT bad here in the States, but most of what I read indicates that his death was more widely felt in other countries. He had just received a whole bunch of lifetime awards around the time of his death, but I think he was still genera...

I don't like to think of Joy Division/New Order as one entity. They are quite different bands to my ears Well, first off there's this Ian Curtis thing. Also, if we start grouping closely related bands (i.e.: vanity projects, supergroups) to develop a "career" rating, where do you draw the...

I guess I'll put my two cents into the classic Blur vs. Oasis debate. I didn't vote for either, but I generally prefer Blur in most cases. They just have a more varied catalogue, and don't seem to be so obsessed with being famous and widely loved, obsessed with becoming The Beatles Vol. 2. Still, I ...

Re: Reclam's Basis-Diskotheken "Rock und Pop" und "Jazz"

Some more jazz lists are always nice. No Nina, however! Henrik was right: jazz critics always ignore her as well! All of the most important acts are here, but it is unfortunate that Louis Armstrong won't have this counted to his score on the artist list. If there is 1 major artist that I feel is vas...

I didn't even know he was gone... That's how powerful borders and language barriers are... I've heard about the guy for several years now and I've yet to really discover his works. Maybe this list will be a nice start. I'm always sad about these unknown giants who leave unnoticed, except probably i...

18/100 now! It is too bad about Mingus's fairly low placement, but at least he's on the list! So far jazz has been represented fairly well, with Nina, Billie, and now the Black Saint all on the list. I was also not expecting either Sabbath or Sir Elton to do that well on a list from this forum, but ...

9/100 artists on my list so far! Beck was a contender for my list, but ultimately was left off. Regarding New Order, again, like the VU and Lou Reed, I opted for Joy Division instead. Very interesting list so far! A diverse representation of different eras, styles, and genres of pop, a decent showin...

Along with that one Swedish list, The Boss's prospects in the next update are looking quite good. The #1 choice is as obvious as it gets, but I must say that the rest of the list is fairly interesting. That voting panel is odd to say the least, but, then again, every RS panel appears to be.

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : Results

Nina Simone was a master of several genres (jazz, soul, blues, pop), but despite this - actually I think it's because of this - she has been ignored by both rock and jazz critics, and as a result she is vastly underrated at AM. I hope this is going to change in the future though. I think that our p...

I also agree with you about MMM, PlasticRam. I think that both Reed and Cale had wonderful careers after the VU days, in some ways surpassing their work in the band. Once again, both men as solo acts were in contention for my list, but I ultimately chose to only represent an individual performer onc...

Now 4 artists from my list! Once again, artists like MBV, Lou Reed, and Depeche Mode were in contention but ultimately we're left out (I find that there are too many great artists to narrow down to just a 100 list!)
