Re: Release dates and EOY lists

Lots of albums that get released at the very end of the year get put on the EOY lists for the next year by publications. So if NME would have put the new Big Boi album on their "Best Albums of 2012" list, they'll just end up putting the Big Boi album on their "Best Albums of 2013&quo...

Funny you say that, Jirin. It's actually my least favorite song on the album too. Of course, that speaks more for the quality of the rest of the songs than any weakness of that one.

I also wasn't a big fan of Runaway, the most famous My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy single

Dylan IS back (again). Just spun Tempest for my first time, and my initial response was very positive. No idea how it will reward repeat listens, but I am once again stunned by how sharp that man's songwriting remains after recording for almost 50 years.

Also, the new Animal Collective is a wonderful album, but I fear that it won't get the reviews it deserves. It's a grower. I predict low Mega-Critic rank, but good EOY performance.

They both have their pros and cons. I prefer Any Decent Music's formula. It's "tougher" and more logical (to me). They also use somewhat better sources in the few cases that ADM uses a source Metacritic doesn't use and vice versa. Three exceptions to that last point are FACT mag, XLR8R and...

After thinking on it, I'm gonna have to agree with John. The new Liars, WIXIW, just blew my mind. I mean, there is so much complexity, depth, beauty and personality in those 43 minutes. Easily their best album since Drum's Not Dead. It will take at least three spins to fully digest it all and see how well it stands up, but could be a classic.

I think 2011 would be the correct year to use. It isn't when the music was recorded, but when it is released. Dylan's Bootleg Series for example. I'm not convinced it will get into the top 3000 with just its ratings and RS listing, though. Maybe as a bubbler.

I love spoken word songs too, but they need to be done well. The "lyrics" (so to speak) need to be extra good. I'm a writer myself so when an artist makes a conscious effort to talk rather than sing, they better make sure the words are interesting. Cave, Waits and Heron did/do a great job ...

I beg to differ John, I think old versions should still be included. All lists are valid, and if an album or song made it at one point, it deserves note. Just like Pitchfork's 1999 Best of the '90s list is still, rightfully, included as well as their 2003 revision. Lots of great albums dropped out i...
