One amendment to the song list - Pitchfork lists Michael Jackson's "Love Never Felt So Good" as the "original version," not the regular album version, which I just learned isn't the "original." The original has practically no production added to it, only significantly accompanied by a piano (played by Paul Anka).

Infact, there are actually three versions of the song on the deluxe version of "XSCAPE," the third being a remix accompanied by Justin Timberlake.

I assume this list is irrelevant for our purposes, but since it's Pitchfork, here is their list of "Honorable Mentions."

This list is chosen by the editors. It's not #51 through #70 in our albums poll, but rather, records we thought were exceptional this year and deserved to be highlighted regardless of where they wound up. This list contains some of the most popular music to appear on our lists and also some of the most obscure; regardless, we think these records were among the most interesting of 2014.

Against Me!: "Transgender Dysphoria Blues"
Lydia Ainsworth: "Right from Real"
Bing & Ruth: "Tomorrow Was the Golden Age"
Container: "Adhesive"
Frankie Cosmos: "Zentropy"
Nils Frahm: "Spaces"
Future: "Honest"
M. Geddes Gengras: "Ishi"
The Hotelier: "Home, Like Noplace Is There"
iLoveMakonnen: "iLoveMakonnen EP"
Makthaverskan: "II"
Migos: "Rich Nigga Timeline"
Objekt: "Flatland"
Pallbearer: "Foundations of Burden"
Protomartyr: "Under Color of Official Right"
Isaiah Rashad: "Cilvia Demo"
Ricky Eat Acid: "Three Love Songs"
Shamir: "Northtown EP"
Sleaford Mods: "Divide and Exit"
Jessie Ware: "Tough Love"

I'm somewhat split on my feelings towards the top of this list. I didn't care for the Grouper album at all, FKA Twig's album was good but VASTLY overrated (same goes for Mac DeMarco), Ariel Pink's album was equal parts good and bewildering, and Run the Jewels made a seriously great album, but one that doesn't really scream "album of the year" like other albums did.

Troll Pitchfork: puts Beyonce on their song list twice, but not on their album list. Should have seen it coming...

Even weirder is that Beyonce didn't even make it as an honorable mention (http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lis ... mention/1/). AND she made it on to Pitchfork's Best of 2010-2014 list (in their top 20, no less). Explain that one to me. The only thing I can think of is that they decided to leave it off the EOY list precisely because it made it on to their half-decade list. To give other albums a chance or something.

Disagree about Run the Jewels, it's a worthy winner. I'm just glad they didn't forget Lykke Li and Ex Hex.

Interestingly unlike many years they didn't really snub any BNM albums from the year (see: Twin Shadow and The Field in recent years). If you discount Beyonce, they all made the top 50 I think except Pallbearer (who got an HM) and Hyperdub 10.1 (which is a compilation anyway).

I'm mostly just surprised at the difference between this and their 2010-14 list. Based on that Benji looked like a certainty to get album of the year. How it dropped to seven is baffling, maybe that feud with the War on Drugs knocked him down. Anyway as long as pom pom is in the top 10 I'm happy.
