This RS list is probably going to match closest to mine when all is said and done. It is amusing to see Green Day take such a high position. I personally put it at a similar position, but I listened to far fewer albums than RS!

The song list is pretty disappointing, even by Rolling Stone's standards. They actually don't think any songs by Radiohead, Bon Iver, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Michael Kiwanuka, ANOHNI or James Blake are in the top 50? And I don't think anyone considers the ones they picked for Frank Ocean, David Bowie, Chance the Rapper and Sturgill Simpson to be the artists' best of the year.

Last year, RS at least had a respectable top 10. This year, I find the top 10 is pretty disappointing apart from Formation, One Dance, Ultralight Beam and Cranes in the Sky

I like the songs they picked from Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, as a small positive.

It looks like "Formation" has an early lead in the songs lists, meaning that it has a good shot as the consensus SOTY. I apologize for the second negative post of the day, but I really, really hope this doesn't come to pass. If so, "Formation" would have to be the worst SOTY in...well...ever?

And this is coming from someone who put "Lemonade" in their top 10 albums of the year. It's a great album, but "Formation" is (to me) easily the single weakest song on it. There's very little there that grabs my attention. No strong hook, no amazing vocal or instrumental performance, nothing particularly unique or experimental. The whole song just kind of meanders along and then ends. Very directionless. Not a fan of the lyrics either. In the movie "Popstar" there's this excellent little segment where Andy Samberg's character (a parody of pop stars in general) releases a song called "Catchphrase". It's hilarious. The whole song skewers the trend in popular music of loading your lyrics with dumb nonsensical catchphrases in order for the song to become a sort of meme. In "Catchphrase" the entire lyrics are made up of these dumb catchphrases, just completely outrageous stuff like...

"Patrick Stewart money!"

or

"Sorry dad!"

or

"It's Conner, bitch!"

...and you get the idea. Anyway, the point of this digression is that this is exactly what I think of whenever I hear Beyoncé sing...

"I got hot sauce in my bag, SWAG!"

or

"When he fuck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, cause I slay"

or

"I twirl on them haters, albino alligators"

...on "Formation". But where "Catchphrase" gained its power through satire, "Formation" loses its power by being the very thing Samberg is making fun of. While people often talk about "Formation" as some amazing black power or feminist anthem, there's very, very little in the lyrics that supports this view. There are some cursory mentions of black issues throughout the song, but come on, even at its best this isn't exactly Kendrick Lamar level lyricism. Is repeating...

"Okay ladies, now let's get in formation"

...at least somewhat socially conscious? Yeah, I guess. Is it particularly deep or interesting or anything even slightly below surface level? Not really.

Now, I'm not saying that every song needs to have "Blacker the Berry"-esque lyrical prowess whenever issues of social justice are brought up. I'm not going to hold anyone to that kind of standard. But when the only conversation surrounding the song involves the song's lyrics, and how socially conscious and powerful and "woke" and yada yada they are, well, you know, I would kind of expect them to at least try.

So far, we have two songs list, both with 50 songs each, and there's only 5 songs in common between the two.

On a more positive note, "Everybody Wants to Love You" be Japanese Breakfast is a great song, and one that I worried would be totally overlooked. Glad it's on here. Also, "Ultralight Beam" and "Cranes in the Sky" are both in my top 10 songs of the year as well, so that's nice.

It actually appears that the song list from Rolling Stone this year might be from an individual. The album list mentions several contributors, but the song list just mentions one.

I like Formation, though if I were to pick the best song off Lemonade it would probably be Freedom

That "let's get in formation" is so lame, I mean yeah it actually took me multiple times of listening to get the pun, but it just comes across as pretending to be cool but it's really not.

In the series badly expressed thoughts of mine.

I only just noticed the pun now, from your post.

Totally in agreement. The lyrics are fantastic, that '70s sample is amazing, and there's more fire in Kendrick's verse than on the whole of untitled unmastered. Really though, almost every track on Lemonade sounded like an instant classic from my first listen, and I wasn't even a particularly huge Beyonce fan before.

Two of the eventual top 10 EOY albums - this already seems incontrovertible - are by siblings. Wonder if anything like that's ever happened before.

Was there ever a definitive decision on whether or not the song list is eligible? I put it in the spreadsheet anyway, for traditions sake.

The album list = great, the album list = not so great. Bob Dylan can release anything at this point and they'll rank it. And am I the only one who doesn't really care for "Formation"? Not even close to my fave track on the album.
