Albums Where You Love Every Song

Post by Holden »

Hi! I am, like many, working on my All Time Songs list. I have a spreadsheet, organized by year, where I include all songs that I consider a 9 or 10. It's not a super diverse list but here it is if you want to check it out!

Anyways, the point of this thread. For people who have spreadsheets like this, or who organize things like this, are there any albums where every song is on your list? I have two:

LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
Portishead | Dummy

My four favorite albums miss out on this distinction (based on the list from last year's all time album poll, which is no longer specifically accurate), because of the following tracks:

Nirvana | In Utero (Tourette, Milk It, Radio Friendly Unit Stutter)
LCD Soundsystem | This Is Happening (Pow Pow, Somebody's Calling Me)
Bruce Springsteen | Born to Run (Night, She's the One, Meeting Across the River, Backstreets)

Also Exile on Main St., which I only included Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice and Sweet Virginia.

Anyone have similar albums?

There's only one album where I would rate every song at least a 7, and that's Funeral, where every song is at least an 8 for me.

Funeral's definitely an album without a single weak spot.

For me, it's gotta be The Moon and Antarctica - 15 songs without a dud in the mix, which I can't say for The Lonesome Crowded West, which has some higher highs but also has "Long Distance Drunk"

I love “Pow Pow”, from the groove to the wall of sound and passing by some unpredictable synths and screams, it’s one of my favorite songs by him and probably will be on my all time top 200.

My perfect albums:

My Aim Is True
Pet Sounds
Innervisions
Fear of Music
The Band - s/t
The Suburbs

Almost perfect (lose by one song)
Parklife (Bank Holiday [I won’t consider Lot 105 a track])
Graceland (Crazy Love)
Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda (Eu Vou Torcer)
In Rainbows (Videotape)
Jorge Ben - África Brasil (Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado)
Marquee Moon (Prove It)
Rubber Soul (What Goes On)

There a lots of albums where I like every song, where everything would get a 7 or more (probably around 50 albums). All songs a 9 or 10 though, don't think there is any ?
Dropping the bar around 8 would probably mean the following would pass :
Perfect From Now On
Silent Shout
Kindred EP
I'd possibly consider I'll Sleep When You're Dead too !

And that's probably it... albums that would lose by one song :
Funeral (Rebellion (Lies))
Either/Or (Ballad of Big Nothing)
Relationship of Command (Rolodex Propaganda)
Fever Ray (Coconut)
Rage Against the Machine (Township Rebellion)

Great list, but I can’t comprehend Videotape being the worst song on In Rainbows when Faust Arp exists!

I like Pow Pow as well, and even Somebody’s Calling Me is fine, they are just a last bit below the other songs on that record

There's never been an album where I LOVE every song. There are very few artists who even have enough songs that I LOVE to fill up an album.

Just checked my spreadsheets.

I do have quite a few albums where all songs get a 7 or higher.
If the bar is at 8 or higher, however, there is no such album I can find.

Pretty amazing to discover that.

I think it should be 9 or higher for LOVE, but If it's 8 or higher I think this would be the only one for me.

Faust Arp is my second least favorite track. But in fact I consider Videotape the only song that stands below the pattern of the whole album.

In terms of albums where every song makes my top 1500 song list, there's just one, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, but that record has only 5 tracks, and I rank all between 1000 and 1500, so while I do think of it as a pretty perfect album, it's not my very favourite.

I'd rate all of the below as perfect albums (all songs 9 or 10), but in each case a couple are missing from my top 1500:
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - 6/8 are in my top 1500
The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound - 10/12 are in my top 1500
The National - High Violet - 8/11 are in my top 1500
R.E.M. - Out of Time - 7/11 are in my top 1500

I've listened to like 700 somethin albums but I believe on AOTY these are the only ones with a perfect 100 score.

Depeche Mode - Violator
Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration
Radiohead - The Bends
Radiohead - Kid A
The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form
Pink Floyd - Animals
Green Day - Dookie
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II
Elliott Smith - Either Or

That being said I have like 50 or 60 something with a score higher than 90 so I love it a lot. There is a handful of albums with a 95 or higher but not a perfect score where I enjoy almost every song as well.

Radiohead - OK Computer
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
Depeche Mode - Ultra
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
Bauhaus - In The Flat Field
The Who - Quadrophenia
Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, m.A.A.d city
Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
The Beatles - Rubber Soul

I enjoy the vast majority of the albums you mentioned.

The albums that have consistently good-excellent songs IMHO include:

1) Dark Side of the Moon (my 4th fave of all time)
2) Quadrophenia (62)
3) Wish You Were Here (133)
4) Rubber Soul (158)
Personal preferences are clearly in play for me.

I would greatly appreciate your song recommendations for the following albums - which have not taken me in yet (i.e., not rated among my all-time faves yet):

1) Music for the Masses
2) Black Celebration
3) Playing the Angel
4) Selected Ambient Works Vol. II
5) In the Flat Field

Thanks!

Totally. Not every album I mentioned do I love EVERY single song but the vast vast majority. As for the ones you mentioned I can help a little bit. As you can see I am a huge Depeche Mode fan and I can understand why many people are not as crazy as me. Playing The Angel seems to be an album geared towards people who are already fans but Music For The Masses and Black Celebration should be fun to explore. Aphex Twin's SAWV2 is the least conventional hear and is full of like 20 something ambient pieces so not really songs. But they are all excellent pieces of ambient music. And there is just something I love about the raw and gothy post-punk sound of Bauhaus's In The Flat Field that makes me return to it a bunch. Here are some recommendations.

1. Music For The Masses (Never Let Me Down Again, Strangelove, Sacred)
2. Black Celebration (Stripped, Black Celebration, A Question of Lust)
3. Playing The Angel (Precious, Suffer Well)
4. Selected Ambient Works Vol. II (#3)
5. In The Flat Field (In The Flat Field, Dark Entries, Double Dare)

I rarely listen to whole albums, and when I do I usually find only a couple of songs worth a relisten.

(When I find an album where every song is worth replaying, it’s usually due to a personal affinity with the album, not the general quality. These albums may not have a single song that would go in my “All Time Songs”-list: albums such as “Stranger in the Alps” and “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”.)

The only album I’ve found where every song is a 9 or 10 is:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
