Bracket 5.5
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta

The psychedelic grooves of “Streets of Calcutta” is a trippy and playful marriage of East and West. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: my heart skips a beat every time I hear “Yumeji's Theme”.

Bracket 5.6
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul

The crazy “Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)” gets more exciting with each listen...

Bracket 5.7
Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata

...and “Pritouritze Planinata” climbs higher up my all-time list with each listen.

Bracket 5.8
Jacques Brel - Vesoul
Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas

Well, this is one motherfucker of a bracket. Passionate chanson vs exquisite flamenco. It’s very close and I had to listen to both songs twice to make a decision, but I guess it’s not surprising that I choose to stay loyal to the guy whose superb catalogue of music I’ve loved longer.
...will keep us together.

Bracket 5.5
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme (Japan, 2000)
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta (India, 1975)
Two wonderful instrumental pieces (in fact 3 of the 4 tracks from Asia -and 8 of the final 16- are instrumentals), two tracks that integrates Eastern and Western influences. I love the elegance and mystery on "Yumeji's Theme" but I'm going to vote for the amazing sitar psychedelic grooves of the "Streets of Calcutta."

Bracket 5.6
Gamelan Gong Kebjar Unknown Ensemble - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) (Indonesia, 1969)
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Wiyathul (Australia, 2008)
I didn't expected to see such an impressive performance on this game of this Gamelan field recording, getting to the Round of 16 being in fact a quite demanding listen. And I didn't expected that I will vote for it once again to get it into the Asian big final. But it's done. I like a lot the Gurrumul song but this kind of rooty avant-garde caught me.

Bracket 5.7
Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel (Estonia, 1978)
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata (Bulgaria, 1975)
Two wonderful music pieces, I'm glad to see the Bulgarian voices getting so far but my vote goes to Arvo Pärt and his tintinnabular style (a melodic voice playing scales is accompanied by a tintinnabular voice in triads), music able to immerse the listener into a deep ocean of beauty and calmness.

Bracket 5.8
Jacques Brel - Vesoul (Belgium, 1968)
Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas (Spain, 1973)
Well, here it is, France vs. Spain at the European semifinal (yes, I know, I know, Brel was from Belgium). Last time I mentioned it Valencia CF lost against Paris Saint Germain, and oddly enough tomorrow there is again an important soccer match between the national teams of France and Spain. But talking about music, what a terrific bracket. Two absolutely fantastic songs that showcase what's so good about chanson and flamenco. I could have voted for Brel (I love the song even it's not my favourite from him) but my vote goes to Paco, and not for a patriotic feeling. The song is great and the playing is superb. But, just like tomorrow at the soccer match, may the best win.

Bracket 5.5
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme

Bracket 5.6
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul
I get the love for Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) and it has been great to see it progress, but Wiyathul grabs me every time.

Bracket 5.7
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata

Bracket 5.8
Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas
Close. I nearly went with Versoul, but the guitar playing here is just right.

My participation in the forum will probably be pretty limited for a while as I study for my certification exam, but I'll always find time for my favorite poll of all: the World Cup. All four of these matchups were remarkably close…

Bracket 5.5
Winner: Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta

Bracket 5.6
Winner: Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul
I love “Wiyathul,” but “Hudjan Mas” just keeps growing on me…

Bracket 5.7
Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel
Winner: Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata

Bracket 5.8
Winner: Jacques Brel - Vesoul
Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas

Bracket 5.5
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta
Both are pretty great, but here I prefer the rocking one.

Bracket 5.6
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul
At first I couldn't really get into strange soung of Golden Rain, but it was to change rather quickly. Wiyathul, on the other hand, has been my favourite since the first rounds and it gets my vote here too - but it's closer than I would think some time ago.

Bracket 5.7
Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata
Only matchup without any hesitation. Now, when Bonga's gone, Spiegel im Spiegel is my favourite song (or should I say "piece"?) remaining in the game.

Bracket 5.8
Jacques Brel - Vesoul
Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas
Pass - both songs are very best of their genres, and I don't really feel like choosing between flamenco and chanson, great, relaxing guitar of Paco and passionate vocal performance of Jacques.

It felt like I had voted in all games last week, but I forgot this one, so thanks Stephan for keeping it open...

Bracket 5.5
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta

Bracket 5.6
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul

A surprising bracket. I don't think I have voted much for these songs, but they aren't bad at all. I'm going with sweet over interesting.

Bracket 5.7
Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata

Wow this was hard. I know this is a song game and not an album game, and viewed as stand alone tracks Spiegel im Spiegel might be the most beautiful of the two. But Pritouritze Planinata is absolutely gorgeous too and my heart says that on the whole the Bulgarian choir deserves to win.

Bracket 5.8
Jacques Brel - Vesoul
Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas
