Top 100 albums survivor game

Post by Henrik »

I was going to make a post in the overrated thread, but instead I got an idea of a game.

Instructions:
Every time you vote, remove the remaining album where you find it most difficult to understand its acclaim.
(This may not be the same as the album you like the least.)

In each post, show which album you have removed using strike-through text (the s button), and post the remaining albums underneath.

One album per day and person.

Edit: I think it will be more interesting if we in this game interpret acclaim as "inclusion in the top 100" rather than the albums' actual positions. So it would not make sense to remove Pet Sounds at an early stage of the game if your reasoning is "I like it but I don't understand why it's number one".

OK, I'll begin.

As DaveC said in the 'Overrated Albums' thread: Vive la différence!

I'm sure many will disagree with my choice, but I scrolled down the list and got to #37 and realized that I found my WTF album: Ramones - Ramones.

Not only do most songs sound like they have exactly the same tempo; they also sound like they use exactly the same chords! On the surface the band appear to be swaggering, energetic and rebellious. Maybe they are all of those things. But if you listen closely, the music is more than just a little monotonous and unoriginal.

There... I've made my negative comment for the day, and I don't feel good about it.

Having said that: Fuck Ramones!
...will keep us together.

I was tempted to remove Music from Big Pink 'cause I don't see that it brings the Band's self titled albums doesn't.
I kinda have the same problem with Bringing it All Back Home (though it's Blood on Tracks whose appeal I don't see at all).
But for me the biggest case of redundancy is the Rolling Stones having 4 albums, as good as it is, what does Let it Bleed bring that the 3 others doesn't ?

1. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
2. The Beatles - Revolver
3. Nirvana - Nevermind

Re: Top 100 albums survivor game

I'm thinking that during one day of the game (perhaps when we're down to around 25 albums) we would re-enter albums instead of remove them. And after that we would not be allowed to remove the same album twice (for example I would not be allowed to remove Layla again if it is re-entered). The criterion for a re-entry would be the album that in your opinion has the most indubitable acclaim. How about this?

Having said that, I think the removals are generally good so far. Trout Mask Replica, Ramones and Imagine were all close picks for me (but please take note that I don't hate any of them!). Though IMO Layla is the most unspectacular album of the bunch.

On the surface the band appear to be swaggering, energetic and rebellious. Maybe they are all of those things. But if you listen closely, the music is more than just a little monotonous and unoriginal.
Huh? The Ramones, who singlehandedly invented punk rock, unoriginal? Indeed, WTF.

So much bloodshed to follow...

I've always had issue with about 2 dozen entries that have Top 100 status, but I notice that I'm already getting enormously depressed or defensive with how a thread like this has to play out. With all the crud in the world, there's only so much music (or movies, etc.) that I like, and significantly less that I actually love...now a lot of that stuff is up for being skewered! Some of my least favorites are crowding the bottom end of the top 100, so that's encouraging in time for the AM3000 update. I'm gonna go back to hanging out in the '80s threads :auto-camptrailer:

Since it’s a new day, I figured I’d vote again before the only albums left are ones I really like. “Plastic Ono Band” has my favorite Lennon song (“Working Class Hero”); but it also has a couple of songs I find unlistenable. Therefore…

The danger of survivor games has been discussed before, but so far I think this game has turned out very well. These albums have so many fans that nobody should be offended when a single person eliminates his favourite album. I want you all to feel encouraged to explain why you remove an album, but if the comments turns aggressive the game will end.

Look at it this way: we have a delicious cake that we're cutting from the bottom so that we're saving the best to the end. Towards the end of the game I hope that there will be more and more comments that celebrate the albums that still remain.

Lots of recent votes! Keep 'em coming!

1. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

He went there! :o :angry-banghead: haha just kidding! I do honestly consider Pet Sounds the best album I've ever heard, but that's the beauty of this discussion, we get to see how other people see this beautiful thing called music!

Yeah, OK, calling the Ramones unoriginal is inaccurate and kinda outrageous. I guess I was just trying to reinforce my complaint that I don't find it very original when a track on an album sounds almost the same as the one before it... and the one before that... and...

I'll wait till tomorrow to vote again as my previous vote was technically in the early hours of this morning. I should be in a less grumpy/cheeky mood then, so I'll keep the catty remarks to a minimum.

Juvenile poetry, noodly keyboards, nearly no bottom end, and lazy, louche, lounge-y arrangements. Plus the pretension of "The End". I guess I like "Break on Through", but that is all.

Fair enough Dan, you're entitled to like or dislike what you want ;)

HAHA and i forgot he doesn't like albums!

The criterion for a re-entry would be the album that in your opinion has the most indubitable acclaim. How about this?
This is great! Although, I was thinking if we could add albums that aren't part of the top 100 canon. We would remove albums until only 25 were left, then we would start adding any album we believe that should rightfully belong in the top 100. After that, we'd have a new top 100 composed of a hybrid of AMFers picks and the canon we all grew up to know and love; Then, we would start removing again; this time not only the classics that at least one of us doesn't care about, but personal favorites that we didn't know others had such differing thoughts about them.

It's a good idea to make albums outside the top 100 eligible for the re-entry round, but I think they should be eligible together with the eliminated top 100 albums, not instead of them. And going all the way back to 100 albums is a little too far I think, but perhaps we could use two days for re-entries.

Two albums are left on this list that I haven't been able to get into at all, not even a song. I can understand why the other one makes the list, due to it's importance and the fact that it's loved by many. I just don't like it. I'll keep that my secret for now. This one though, isn't all that important to a genre, or at least only important to a very minor genre, and the whole album leaves me cold. Sorry, Henrik.
