So they suck because you've never heard one of their songs?
You're perfectly in line to prefer 50's and 60's music (I personally love the late 60's and early 70's), but you cross the line when you attack groups that you don't even know and do it obnoxiously.
SavoyBG wrote:You're insane. Elvis Presley was popular for many reasons, and he certainly was not popular with guys because he gyrated his ass.
He was popular with guys because they wanted to be him, because every woman loved him.

No offense bro, but I don't think I get the logic there. Theres probably people here that have heard more Radiohead songs than songs by Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. I know thats so hard for you to believe because they are so out of your musical bubble, but they definitely deserve there spot among the greats. Honestly they might be higher or very close on my list to Stevie Wonder. I understand they aren't music that you would get into, which is totally fine! It's your opinion, but you can't use that as a way to objectively say they aren't a great artist.

Now with that said, I'll get rid of Don't You Want Me by Human League

3. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
I know this song is usually kept among the best songs in the history of contemporary music, and obviously is a good song, but not the best. This song, like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, have mixed elements of different genres in a single song, and for that reason seems impressive. But is that really what makes a song a good song? No, the quality of a song is not necessarily linked to the difficulty of its creation. No doubt this is a very, VERY good song, but not the best.
Respect for all. :)

Obviously I was exaggerating, there is more than one reason Elvis Presley was popular, but they were all about his personality, not about his music.

The main point is that music should not be required to target the current trend that is popular at the time to be considered great, and it's impossible to be popular without targeting the current trend that is popular at the time.

Elvis's music was entirely different from the current trend at the time. That was the point. It SET the new trend for everyone else.

The two number one songs in the USA just before "Heartbreak Hotel" were "The Poor People of Paris" by Les Baxter and "Lisbon Antigua" by Nelson Riddle. Two bandleaders conductiing orchestras that played traditional pop.

From Jirin: "Obviously I was exaggerating, there is more than one reason Elvis Presley was popular, but they were all about his personality, not about his music. The main point is that music should not be required to target the current trend that is popular at the time to be considered great, and it's impossible to be popular without targeting the current trend that is popular at the time."

My response: Below I copied the ten number one hits in the USA before "I Want to Hold Your Hand." I don't see the Fabs having much in common with those songs or performers. The Beatles did not sound like anyone else. By 1964, they had fully absorbed their influences and created their own signature sound (which would evolve over the next few years). They were quite original. Bob Dylan, for one, was blown away by their chords, which were unusual for pop music.

Nor are the Beatles alone. Who sounded like Sly and the Family Stone in 1968-1969? Who made records like "When Doves Cry" and "Kiss" in 1984-86? Of course, all of these artists spawned imitators. So, you get "Lies" by the Knickerbockers, or "Oh Shelia" by Ready for the World or "Are You Ready?" by the Pacific Gas and Electric. Those imitations are forgotten, which brings us back to the big point: it's not about short-term popularity; it is about sustained popularity and continued relevance. This is what separates, say, Chuby Checker (who had only one song with cultural staying power) versus, say, Sam Cooke (who had over half a dozen).

So Much in Love- The Tymes (8/3/63) (1 wk)
Fingertips (Pt. II)- Little Stevie Wonder (8/10/63) (3 wks)
My Boyfriend’s Back- The Angels (8/31/63) (3 wks)
Blue Velvet- Bobby Vinton (9/21/63) (3 wks)
Sugar Shack- Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs (10/12/63) (5 wks)
Deep Purple- Nino Tempo & April Stevens (11/16/63) (1 wk)
I’m Leaving It Up to You- Dale & Grace (11/23/63) (2 wks)
Dominique- The Singing Nun (12/7/63) (4 wks)
There! I’ve Said It Again- Bobby Vinton (1/4/64) (4 wks)

And, by the way, good call on "Brick," it was next in my queue.

"The Twist" and "Let's Twist Again" and "Limbo Rock" are all still played all the time at weddings and other parties.

"Let's Twist Again" is played more than "The Twist" at Last.FM.

Every mobile DJ in the USA plays Chubby Checker's music all the time still in 2013. Chubby was the first rock artist who was widely popular with adults in their 30s and older. He also still hold the record of having five albums in the top 15 on Billboard all the same week.

[quote="SavoyBGI've never heard one song by Radiohead in my life. Hard to believe thay could be one of the most important artists of all time, more important then Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles.
[/quote]

First I think that tends to show that you really try hard not to know any recent music, but most importantly it shows a generational bias in your opinion.
Pretty much anyone under 35 (and I'd say 40) knows Creep by Radiohead, it's a very popular song, a staple one... as relevant an indicator of popularity as it might be, it's one of the most requested songs in karaoke. Finding someone my age who can tell you who sung The Twist and Let's Twist Again ? Good Luck ! People under 30 who can name more Ray Charles songs than Radiohead ? You will find a bunch, but far from the majority. Someone with a Radiohead best-of at home ? Easy. With an Elvis album ? Very less likely (you could come to my place but that would be cheating ^^ )
So whether you think it's fine or an abjection, for my generation the biggest rock artists are U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Nirvana or Coldplay... And people from before the Beatles ? They don't care ! Elvis would be the one exception, but more like Marylin Monroe for how iconic he is more than for any artistic merit (you'd find people in their 20s everywhere for who Elvis can be summed up by a haircut, a hip movement and 3 little parts of song such as "1 for the money, 2 for the show" or "Don't be cruel to a heart that's true") . And sure they are wrong, Elvis has tons of artistic merit, but you talk about popularity, and they are young, so they don't care about grandaddy's music.
Beside that, for a lot of people who no longer buy CDs or listen to the radio, sales are not relevant... the biggest artists in the world ? Look who headline Coachella or Glastonbury, who are playing at the biggest stadiums and maybe who are topping Spotify, iTunes and Deezer's charts (not Last.fm, last.fm is for music fans, it does not reflect a broader audience). I'd add "who have the most followers on Twitter" but in some case it would show appreciation of personality more than music, still that's a good sign of how Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga are among the biggest stars right now.

How so?

I would say that acts like Jay-Z and Mariah Carey and R. Kelly and U2 and and a few others who are current superstars are very significant parts of music history. I just can't see an artist who has never even had a big (top 30) hit single in the USA as being all that significant. Their best known album did not even crack the top 20 on the USA album charts.

I'm not saying that the group is not significant. Just that they are not at the level of all time greats like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and the Beach Boys. Just not enopugh mainstream appeal to put them at that level.

The Rolling Stone top artists list had them around #80 of all time. Stevie Wonder and ray Charles were in the top 10.

First off....Rolling Stone can't be taken very seriously ever...and personally I never found mainstream appeal that important. Popularity doesn't always=good. In fact it's often the opposite.

Well I think I developped an answer to your question in my previous post.

Anyway, as I said in today's world you can not summarizes a music artist by its sales, even if you are only looking at "popularity". You have to look who can make a concert in the biggest venues, who can headline a festival, who is invited to TV shows, who can create the most buzz, who people try to emulate... there are so many hits that people can not stand anymore a year later and that you don't hear ever again to consider sales a legit argument (or really, Crazy Frog should be considered one of the biggest artist of the past decade in Europe). Does anyone still listen to Soulja Boy who was the biggest single sellers in 2007 ? Macarena ? Boom there it is ? heck I have no idea what the most sold songs of 2003 and 2004 in the US even sound like. And how come none of the 3 most sold songs of all time featured in this top 200 ?

Also, I don't consider Rolling Stones magazine revelant for music of the past 2 decades.

And then again, really, ask someone between 20 and 40 who are the greatest music artists of all time (excluding classic), you will get many different answers, from Led Zeppelin to U2, Queen to the Rolling Stones, Radiohead to Muse, Nirvana to Coldplay, the Beatles to Michael Jackson.
Put together, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard might not amount to even 1% of the answers which is probably a shame but should show you that you are looking at popularity and "greatness" in a very narrowed and personal point of view.

But it's more often not the opposite.

Even on this site, the vast majority of the most acclaimed songs and albums were also very popular.

Why should I be concerned with the opinions of some 34 year old guy who has not studied the entire history of rock and roll?

This is why they won't even let you run for president in the USA until you are at least 35 years old. Because young people have not been around long enough yet to know all that much.

Just like artists have to have been recording for at least 25 years to be niminated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, fans should have to have been actively listening to music for at least 25 years before we should even ask for their opinions about the subject. Some 21 year old kid who has only been interested in music for 8 years just hasn't been around long enough to have a valid opinion on who are the greatest rock artists of all time yet. Rock music has been around for 65 years now.

I thought what mattered was the impact on the mainstream, not the opinion of rock and roll scholars ?

And why should I be concerned with the opinions of some 55 year old guy who has not studied the entire history of rock and roll ? Rock music hasn't stopped being around on the last 30 years.

I've "studied" it, I just haven't "listened" to it. There's no need to hear these records to place them in their proper historical perspective. Personal taste has no place in this.

Their best known album did not even crack the top 20 on the USA album charts.
Radiohead have had 2 number 1 albums in the USA, and 3 other albums that landed in the top 3.

None of those are my lists. Any list I edit is based more on lasting popularity than on initial popularity. It's also way too early in 2013 to know which songs from 2010 will have lasting popularity. Also, the DDD lists were not done at the time of each year. They were all done pretty recently.

The list that you posted the link to was just done at the end of last year:
