I guess I don't expect some favorite albums to show up here. (Justin Hayward solo albums, anyone?) Some of them, though, I hoped would have a better shot at being represented:

Tori Amos - The Beekeeper
Marshall Crenshaw - Field Day
Enya - Shepherd Moons
The Motels - All Four One
Oingo Boingo - (something)
Sting - The Soul Cages
Neil Young's first album
Soundtracks for Bambi, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Star Wars

I'm surprised "When the Levee Breaks" is only bubbling. I'm also shocked that "Dumb" by Nirvana is nowhere on AM. I'm sure there are others I'm missing, but those two have always surprised me a lot.

Anyone else a bit surprised by the exclusion of Herman's Hermit's "I'm Into Something Good" on the AM list? Sure, it may not be a masterpiece song by anyone's definition, but it's a great slice of 60's bubblegum pop that is still somewhat popular today. I figured it would at least earn a "bubbling" due to that, but nope- nowhere to be seen.

Same goes for The Beatles "Yellow Submarine".

When the Levee Breaks is surprising. I think it's at the very least top 5 Led Zeppelin.

THIS. So much THIS.

Also, I'm surprised that Supertramp - The Logical Song isn't in the top 3000, but maybe I just want it to be. On the flip side, I'm surprised that Rihanna - S.O.S. IS in the top 3000. I don't think I'd put it above Disturbia (which is the only Rihanna song I really like).

Also, like Henry said, The Doors - Touch Me. The organ is actually pretty rockin', along with the drums and horns.

I'm a little surprised Lucinda Williams - Sweet Old World isn't there because she has two albums in the top thousand and I think of Sweet Old World as her best.

I'm surprised that Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour" and Guns n' Roses' "November Rain" are only bubbling under ... I always thought they were up there with any of their other big hits.

Of my top 500 songs, 390 are either in the AM 3000 or Bubbling Under. Among the remaining songs, most are lesser-known gems from my favorite albums and/or artists. I would be tickled if songs like "Care of Cell 44" (Zombies), "Too Many People" (McCartney), or "Please Let Me Wonder" (Beach Boys) made the cut, but I certainly don't expect such songs to make the list. The ten songs below are ones whose absence really takes me by surprise. For fun, I ranked them by the degree of surprise (from least to most)...

10. Tommy James and the Shondells, "Mony Mony." One of the great party records. Fixture on oldies stations for decades. Became a hit again in 1987 thanks to Billy Idol.

09. Temptations, "Since I Lost My Baby." One of Motown's best slow jams.

08. Dionne Warwick, "I Say a Little Prayer." Aretha's cover is on AM, but Warwick's version is better.

07. James Brown, "Give It Up or Turnit Loose." One of the funkiest records ever cut.

06. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, "You're All I Need to Get By." On the short list for best duet ever.

05. Stevie Wonder, "As." One of his best and most enduring songs.

04. Temptations, "I Can't Get Next to You." One of their biggest hits. Great vocal showcase.

03. Frank Sinatra, "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." One of his most iconic songs.

02. James Brown. "Super Bad." I actually like #7 more, but "Super Bad" is better known and can still power TV ad campaigns in 2013.

01. The Who. "Behind Blue Eyes." The other two iconic tracks from Who's Next are in the AM Top 500. It is hard to believe this one has not achieved even a "Bubbling Under" status.

Honorable Mentions: "No Matter What" (Badfinger), "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" (Paul Simon), "Get Down Tonight" (KC and the Sunshine Band), "Goodbye Stranger" (Supertramp), "Sara Smile" (Hall and Oates), "The Real Me" (The Who), "Adam Raised a Cain" (Bruce Springsteen), "I've Just Seen a Face" (Beatles), "Two of Us" (Beatles), "Every Picture Tells a Story" (Rod Stewart), "Accidents Will Happen" (Elvis Costello), "Crazy Love" (Van Morrison), "Jessie's Girl" (Rick Springfield), "American Tune" (Paul Simon), "While You See a Chance" (Steve Winwood), "Here Comes the Rain Again" (Eurythmics), "Father Figure' (George Michael), "Nightswimming" (R.E.M.), "Daniel" (Elton John).

I was so surprised to read this that I had to double check. My #6 of all time.

The next song on my all time list which is missing from AM is Heaven by Talking Heads - not exactly rare or obscure.

I know I'm super biased, but the lack of certain White Stripes songs makes me sad. I can kinda understand why there aren't any from s/t and De Stijl. However, I can't believe that 7NA and My Doorbell are the only songs from their respective albums to make the cut.

Now that the site's been updated I was disappointed not to see The Pains of Being Pure At Heart's Belong ranked dispite it getting better reviews than their classic debut. Also I don't recall seeing Cults masterpiece debut listed anywhere either.

One that I am baffled about:
Nina Simone - Sinnerman

I am glad it did so well in the unacclaimed songs game. Did it actually win? Anyway, quite some people agreed with me.

The final was that and Curtis Mayfield's "Right on for Darkness" (which I'm also surprised is absent). I forget who won, though.

One song I always thought was bubbling under and found out otherwise when I worked on the new songs spreadsheet is "Possession" by Sarah McLachlan. "Sinnerman" and "Right On For the Darkness" (which have already been mentioned) are also favorites of mine that I hope will find enough sources to make the list in future updates.

Technically, I don't think the finals ever really took place, but both songs are mega-winners anyway!
