Great list Nicolas!

So far I've only been able to listen to the following songs:
16 . Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grapelli - Echoes of France | 1947 - I will certainly add Echoes of France to my favorites list. It is indeed a treasure
46 . The Who - We're Not Gonna Take It (live in Woodstock) | 1970 - The Woodstock version of We're Not Gonna Take It is great, but I typically only include studio versions in my top list. Not sure if I'll make an exception here, but the Woodstock version is clearly worthy of further consideration and the Who are one of my favorite performers of all time.

Hopefully, I 'll listen to more songs from your list shortly.

Nicolas: There are still a few other lists I have to catch up on (I was waiting until I had a little more time, since I’ve been focusing more on the Moderately Acclaimed and yearly polls, which have deadlines). However, after scanning your list and seeing so many longtime personal favorites, as well as other great songs I discovered in the World Cup, I was excited to hear some of the songs unknown to me. Here are my favorites so far:

Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grapelli - Echoes of France: The highest ranking song on your list that was unfamiliar to me. I’ve always loved songs that transport me to a place I’ve never been, or an era that I never lived through. This great instrumental managed to do both.

Mahmoud Ahmed - Ere Mela mela/Meche Neu: For some reason, I didn’t recognize this one by title, but I did as soon as I began listening to it. Since I knew I’d heard it in the World Cup, I was shocked that I must not have voted for it! I went back to all of my previous votes and comments, and found that it was a tough call for me between this wonderful song and eventual champion “ Yèkèrmo sèw.” It still would be.

Alain Bashung - La Nuit je mens: This one I also discovered that I knew. (Perhaps from the 90s poll?) The vocals here are exquisite, and I love the way the music intensifies in a subtle way throughout. It has a memorably cinematic, provocative video, too.

Boris Vian - Le Déserteur: What a vivid, powerful song this is! (Thanks for linking to the lyric video.) It’s message is every bit as potent as the best anti-war songs I’ve heard (“Masters of War” by Dylan; “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die” by Country Joe & The Fish; and the little known “Body Count” by Bourgeois Tagg).

Growling Tiger - Money Is King: I noticed that this terrific Calypso song was recorded in 1979, but it’s probably even more timely today. Another great find with a universal message. In fact, all five of these songs will be strong contenders for my next all-time songs list.

Thanks for the recommendations, and I’ll listen to more as soon as I find time!

Of course there is NO DEADLINE for this thread. Take your time. I'm gonna post more links soon.

The highest world songs were chosen for the World cup an decade polls but deeper in the list you might find something something you don't know.

JamieW thanks for the comments. you probably recognized the French national anthem in the Django tune. it was revorded just after World war two and never this wary anthem has sounded so cool.

Jsu after WWII the colinial wars began in Indochina and Algeria. That's when Vian one of the most famous writers and pets of the century, and a great jazz musician, wrote Le Deserteur.

Comments on these personal all-time lists have been sparse recently - a bit like tumbleweed in a semi-desert. But it doesn't mean that people aren't paying attention to them. Heck, even people who have never posted here before have thanked you for posting your list. :music-listening: Needless to say, I love your lists and know them very well by now (thanks for the links, by the way). Anyone who doesn't delve into your treasure trove of songs don't know what they're missing. And if all else fails, you can always keep doing this with the thread...

I can't speak for anyone else, but based upon the great discoveries I've made already, I know I'll be back (and within the next few days, too)! Also, thanks for the additional information regarding the songs I've commented on: I always enjoy hearing more about the songs I love (which is probably why I'm always buying books that include stories behind songs and artists). :music-listening:

Here are a few more favorites I’ve found:

Erik Satie - Gymnopédie 1
I was already familiar with this wonderful composition, but I wanted to mention it anyway because it exemplifies the simple beauty I’ve always enjoyed in the minimalist composers from the next century (like Arvo Part).

Blind Gary Davis - Death Don't Have No Mercy
I just heard this one recently when I listened to “Harlem Street Singer” for the Moderately Acclaimed game. I loved the album; and this was instantly my favorite song off the album. Blues at its finest, both lyrically and musically.

Georges Brassens - La Mauvaise Réputation
Again, thanks for linking to a lyrics video. I’ve always thought of Brassens as a great, vivid storyteller, and this is now my favorite song by him. Its message of the ultimate price paid for nonconformity demonstrates both the power of his lyrics, and his wry sense of humor (which is an incredible strength of his).

Dick Annegarn - Bruxelles
Another subtle, beautiful discovery. (I’m also wondering if some of these might have been included in the World Cup game before I joined the forum. I definitely need to backtrack and listen to a lot of the nominees I never had the chance to hear.)

Amadou Balaké - Taximen
Both the instrumentation and energy level of this song make it an absolute joy to listen to.

Buena Vista Social Club - El Cuarto de Tula
I definitely need to dig deeper into the music of Buena Vista Social Club, since every time I hear anything by them, I always love it. There’s a magical quality to their music that’s difficult to define. If there’s a specific album of theirs that you think would be a good starting point for me (since I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never heard an entire album by them), I’d appreciate the recommendation.

Ron Sexsmith - Speaking with the angel
This beautiful, melodic, heartbreaking song really struck a chord with me. It’s definitely one of my favorite finds from your list so far.

The musical variety in your list is staggering. I’ve found many of my all-time personal favorites, both current and classic, as well as great world music, blues, bluegrass, and classical. Thanks again for posting. I’m looking forward to exploring further!

I think that among all the albums that came out over time under the name of Buena Vista Social Club, there is one that can be considered THE Mr. album. (Please, all standing.) *Applause*. And is the eponymous album "Buena Vista Social Club" by Juan de Marcos González and Ry Cooder. However, we must remember that this album is somehow the tip of an iceberg which is actually Cuban music. I like especially Ibrahim Ferrer discography as well as Omara Portuondo. Oh, just one thing: I do not recommend much the album "Rhythms of the World". Not a bad album, it's just that I do not think it is a good way to meet Cuban music. It's like we say here: Dar atole con el dedo. "Give atole with your finger." This colloquial phrase means that you think you are getting something when really you're getting only a taste, or something that is not what it seems. Anyway, Cuban music is amazing by itself, you'll see. :music-listening:

The album in the Moderately Acclaimed game was my nomination

"La Mauvaise Réputation" was his first hit, and a signature song that sums up Brassens' motto

Annegarn is one of my favorite French singers, influenced by folk/blues and the great classic chanson singers like Brel and Brassens. "Bruxelles" is quite different from the rest of his songs. It was also a big hit and it's his most classic piece (but also maybe his most beautiful and universal).
jamieW wrote:Amadou Balaké - Taximen

One of my favorite African songs. The music is fantastic, and the lyrics are great and hilarious. The song (probably very autobiographical) is about a guy who's complaining about the cabdrivers in Abidjan who never want to let him in their cars. Balaké was from Burkina Faso, a country that provided a lot of immigrant workers to the richer Côte d'Ivoire. He's singing in French with that inimitable West African vitality and eloquence, about the racism against Northerners and Guys from Burkina that eventually ended in a terrible war between 2002 and 2011.

I can only second Blanco's recommendations. The eponymous album (and the movie too) is an absolute masterpiece. I can also recommend you 2 more albums by Buena Vista musicians : "Yo Vengo Aqui" by Compay Segundo and "Sublime Illusion" by Eliades Ochoa. And all of the Trio Matamoros songs of course!

Yes, I really love Ron Sexsmith, and it's a pity that he's so unknown; he's a great songwriter. I remember discovering him when he was opening in 1995 for an artist I don't remember (was it Supergrass? Blur? I don't really remember).

Thanks Jamie for your comments!! :P

Thanks for the additional song information! I was especially intrigued by the story of “Taximen.” Of your album recommendations, the only one I’d heard before was “Yo Vengo Aqui,” which I do really like. (It was a tough decision for me between that great album and Hank Williams in the Moderately Acclaimed game.) Your list has definitely inspired me to keep exploring the individual song lists, since I sort of dropped out when I became so busy with school. After I take my certification exam in a couple of weeks, I plan on setting aside a little time each week for catching up on the song lists (Fred, Slick, and a couple of others I missed), as well as coming back to this outstanding list which has already provided me with so many unfamiliar gems.

Hi nicolas, I got obviously plans of listening (and commenting on) your wonderful list, although I don't expect to find too many unknown songs because I already know many of them thanks to your recommendations on previous games. The problem (as usual) is that I'm too busy right now to do it. But I'll do it as soon as I can...

Ninth list, this time from mon pote nicolas, one of the few AMers I had the luck of meet personally. We shared pleasant times with our families both in Paris and Valencia and, of course, we shared some music listening not only at our homes (and exchanging compilations of our favourite Spanish and French songs) but especially after years of paying attention to every other suggestions on the many music polls at the AM Forum. That's in part the main "problem" when I board the pleasant task of listen to your list, many of the gems that fill your list were unknown to me some years ago but you discovered them to me/us (so some of the Top 10 of unknown songs were not completely unknown, I'm going to write comments for the ones I'm not too familiar with, even if I listened to it before). I wish I could go back in time (let's say) five years and listen to your list with "fresh ears" to be able to discover these wonderful songs for the first time.
Anyway I know that traveling through your list is going to be an exciting experience even without the "surprise factor." Roots music, blues, chanson, world music and good emotional rock, it all sounds good to me! For instance I absolutely love your Top 10!! Only masterpieces there, and three great songs in French on it!

Top 10 of unknown songs:
67. Doc & Merle Watson | My Rough And Rowdy Ways: not completely unknown, I listened to the whole "Deep Gap" album for the Moderately Acclaimed Poll #4 but probably I did not pay enough attention to that particular song. A wonderful traditional country song, great song-writing (by Jimmie Rodgers), beautiful singing (especially the yodel) and guitar playing, it's no surprise that you like it that much. Frank and honest roots music.
70. Amadou Balaké | Taximen: absolutely unknown to me, this artist doesn't even have an entry in Wikipedia. Undeservedly because the song transmits pure joy with these playful rhythms, these fresh guitars and these joyful call-and-response vocals, African music is always so uplifting (despite being created amidst misery and injustice).
79. Robert Wyatt |Maryan: not completely unknown too, I knew the "Shleep" album and recently (during my intensive Eno period some months ago) I listened again to the songs with Eno involvement including "A Sunday in Madrid." But I didn't remember this wonderful song, written by Wyatt with Philip Catherine that features a dreamy (almost uterine) atmosphere, delicate guitars by Catherine and, of course, the beautifully peculiar voice (like an injured bird) of Wyatt.
89. Big Joe Williams | Brother James: I also have listened to the song in that Arhoolie compilation I downloaded from your own copy but I didn't remember it very well. And I should not because the song is a jewel of Delta blues, and this 1960 version is even better than the original 1937 one. Quoting your own comment on Youtube: "Big Joe was just out of jail when Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records recorded this. "His whole psyche was just full of these problems that he had, and he sang with a ferociousness that has never been duplicated"."
95. Rev. Robert Wilkins | The Prodigal Son: of course I know the cover the Rolling Stones made for "Beggars Banquet" and even the original version from 1929 (called then "That's No Way to Get Along"), I recently listened to both for the thread I'm preparing about the Stones covers. This 1965 live version is excellent (more likely the one that influenced the Stones), with all the flavours of rural blues-gospel, both earthy and heavenly.
101. Dick Annegarn | Les Tchèques: excellent song, probably I listened to it while I was chez toi, you played these days Dick Annegarn quite often. I like the minimalist album version, I like it even more the version with the string quartet you linked and, of course, I like your own cover, especially the moment when you sing that beautiful Eastern European melody (from 2'25").
109. The Flatlanders | Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown: more a legend than a band. I've seen this band and album in some lists but I don't remember having actually listened to them. And I liked it. A lot. My favourite from this list of unknowns. A deliciously mellow country tune with lovely guitars and mandolins but with a bizarre sound in the background throughout the song. I initially thought that it was a Theremin but I searched on the web to find out that it was a Singing Saw. Absolutely brilliant!
130. Big Bill Broonzy | When Did You Leave Heaven: I found on the Internet that this was Keith Richards' second favourite song (after Jesse Fuller's "Stagolee", you can find his Top 10 here). Terrific chord sequence (just listen the first 15 seconds of the studio version), fantastic vocals that infuses authenticity to such a saccharine-tinged standard. Keith Richards (and Nicolas) are right, this song comes directly from heaven.
134. Midlake | Acts of Man: I like (a lot) their previous album, "The Trials of Van Occupanther" (it's even on my Top 250 albums) but it seems that not enough to ignite my curiosity about their next album, that I admit I never listened to. But, as I expected, the song is superb. A splendid example of how to create music so magnificent and mysterious with so few elements (bass, drums, acoustic guitars, flute and -wonderful- lead and backing vocals). Great.
149. Franz Schubert | Death and the Maiden: II. Andante con moto: I wouldn't have expected to find an unknown (to me) classical piece on your list but I'm delighted to have found it. I already knew the fourth movement (Presto) of this String Quartet for the Dan's recommendation thread about chamber music (Dan, I hope you'll come back with your classical music project in the future). But (and sorry Dan) I prefer this second movement, beginning like a death march (based on the theme of a previous lied, also wonderful) but displaying from there a wide range of emotions. Superb.

And the next 15:
150. Little Brother Montgomery | I Keep on Drinking
158. Dick Annegarn | Rhapsode
172. Junior Wells | Messin' With the Kid
177. Leadbelly | Western Plain (When I Was A Cowboy)
214. Willis Alan Ramsey | Angel Eyes
215. Richard Galliano | Libertango
216. Stranger Cole & Lester Sterling | Bangarang
217. Brad Mehldau Trio | Exit Music (For a Film)
240. The Roots | Make My
249. Fela Kuti | Power Show
261. Gregory Porter | Be Good (Lion's Song)
265. Stan Ridgway | Camouflage
276. RZA feat. Tekitha | Walking Through the Darkness
281. Blind Lemon Jefferson | See That My Grave Is Kept Clean
286. Septeto Nacional | Arolla Cubano

Excellent songs also on the next 15, I particularly liked the songs by Junior Wells, Brad Mehldau Trio, The Roots, Fela Kuti, Gregory Porter, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Septeto Nacional. I liked specially the Live at the Village Vanguard version of "Exit Music," I heard before the studio version (also remarkable) but the live version is even better, expanding it to almost 8 minutes of excellence.
Reading my comments it's obvious that I loved your list. I liked the lists (like yours) that simultaneously are inclusive/horizontal (it shows great variety, covering quite a lot of ground) and exclusive/vertical (it goes deep in some styles you prefer like roots music and perfectly showcases your personality, choosing songs that produce an emotional impact on you). I particularly loved how the songs were spread geographically and historically, with songs from every decade of the last 100 years and from almost every part of the world (not in vain you were the main contributor of songs to that excellent Foreign World Cup Poll we had some years ago).
So, despite my approach to the lists is different (I tend not to show so strongly my personality and include songs I consider "important" in general and not only in a personal level), it shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that the correlation between our lists is the highest on this Song Special Game (40/250, 16%). Thanks a lot for your list, nicolas!

By the way, everyone forgot this game (after its indisputable peak, sonofsamiam's list) and I'm sure a lot of posters have their lists ready to post (Mindrocker?). As a remainder those were the lists posted:
1st Moonbeam
2nd Henry
3rd Zorg
4th Listyguy
5th Honorio
6th Whuntva
7th Slick
8th Fred
9th nicolas
10th Jackson
11th sonofsamiam
(there was some confusion with the numbers when Slick did not titled his list and then Fred titled his list as the #11 and then Jackson and sonofsamiam followed as #12 and #13).

Next… Jackson! I promise not to delay my listening that much this time.

Nice to read Honorio's comments on Nicolas's excellent list.
Honorio wrote:(Dan, I hope you'll come back with your classical music project in the future).
I certainly will, Honorio. The main reason why I haven't returned to that thread is that the yearly polls have taken up most of my music-listening time. I consider those yearly polls to be a great opportunity for me to thoroughly explore the music of a particular year. I've just finished my preliminary listening for the 1971 poll. As I might have mentioned before, for every poll I sample loads of albums to decide which albums I want to listen to in full. Usually, it's between 30 and 55 albums, but for the 1971 poll it's just under 100 albums  so I'd better move my ass and start listening. Well, that's not quite true, is it? I'd better sit on my ass and start listening. (And the thing I always appreciate most about listening to music for these polls is how the internet's evolution keeps making it more and more possible for us to listen to basically anything we want to.)

But classical music will play a bigger part in my life again shortly. I will return to the UK around the middle of April, and Thorben will undoubtedly ensure that classical music is frequently blaring from the speakers in our house. So I hope to go back to my classical music thread within a few months. Similar to your and Romain's country-specific threads, I'll post a piece of music once a day, or two or three times a week. That's probably better than just dumping a big list that's difficult to digest.

Anyway, I'll end this post with a link to a wonderful song we've both discovered through Nicolas and seem to enjoy equally: "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" by The Flatlanders.
...will keep us together.

Hon and Dan thanks for those wonderful comments that go straight to my heart :) :) :) :)
I'm quite busy these days with my new job, but I don't really miss most of AMF's posts.
