Songs and Albums of 1985 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

Image

We now begin the second half of the 80’s with a year that shares its name with a crappy song by Bowling For Soup - 1985.

So please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums of 1985. Only the top 15 will be given points, but we all love reading larger lists. Only lists with at least 5 songs/albums will be tallied.

Feel free to check out the recommendation thread to see what other forumers want you to vote for or to silicate your favorites to them. I’d also recommend checking out if you know nothing about the 80’s.

The deadline is midnight (UTC/Forum Time) on August 1st.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please use the following format when posting your list:

Rank. Artist - Album/Song

EPs and compilations are not. Discrepancies with this matter as well as the year of a release will be determined by RateYourMusic.

1985, I was 12 years old and grew up on AOR, Hair Metal and Top 40 and then I heard my #1 album for the 1st time... it changed everything. Side note, for the 8th time I tried listening to a Tom Waits album thinking I must be missing something and for the 8th time I end up hating him more and more. I will never understand the appeal. You don't even like "Downtown Train"? That's one of his more standard rock songs.

So the IMPORT version I bought of Psychocandy came with the song Some Candy Talking (although it came with this...*)Is it considered part of Psychocandy? Might not matter. If their masterpiece Upside Down was included that would be an entirely different story.

1. KATE BUSH- HOUNDS OF LOVE
2. The Jesus and Mary Chain- Psychocandy
3. Whitney Houston- s/t (OOH!!! MAINSTREAM AC WITH POLISHED EPIC GORGEOUS POP VOCALS, so anti-Waits how could I NOT include her. If he's gonna win this year I'm not going down quitely)
4. The Replacements- "ME" ;)
5. The Fall- The Nations Saving Grace

Are you going to vote for songs this year, too? I seem to respect Tom Waits more than I, uh, listen to him. Just trying to enable your revenge here...

I don't know, do you think he'll have the #1 song as well? OK here's how I can offend his fans like no other...I would rather listen to the Rod Stewart version of Downtown Train at least once an hour every day of my life than have to listen to Waits version more than once in all my life ;) And that's saying something because Rod Stewart could not be any more lame but still manages to top his lameosity with one of the most atrocious Standard albums in the history of music. A compilation only 65+ year old women on menopause would put on to work up even more of a sweat ;) In fact I may actually prefer that ENTIRE compilation over listening to just one single Tom Waits song :angry-nono:

Just because Rain Dogs will easily win this year doesn't mean EVERYONE has to like it. While I'm also a fan, Swordfishtrombones has never clicked and probably never will.

what can I say, I'm Elaine and Waits is my English Patient. Just can't sit through an entire song without going "I HATE IT!!!!!" and the crowd gasping in the theater are like the majority of singer songwriter fanatics who think he's a God. Peterman are the close friends that LOVE Waits who I PRETEND to agree with until I finally can't take listening to another torturous song anymore. When I blurt out "I HATE HIM!!!!!" I never see from them again (equivalent to "You're Fired")

I can see why people don't like Waits. His vocals are Dylan-esque, but he also uses whacko instruments on every song-whereas Dylan just uses guitar-bass-drums-so he's less accessible. That said, I love Rain Dogs and will most likely have it as my #1 for the year, and "Downtown Train" will probably be my #1 song.

Listguy,

In each case, the artist in question redid the song. The 1985 versions were the "hit" versions and the ones that get played on radio, included on comps, etc. Shouldn't people be able to vote for the version they like better (or know)?

For the sake of preventing even more confusion then there already is, we don't differentiate versions of songs and use the earliest release date from RYM. A great example of this is "Radio Free Europe". It was released in 1981 originally and qualified for the final poll for this year, but the version everyone knows was released two years later.

These two songs are/were my #5 and #6 of 1985. What's more important, is that "West End Girls" should fairly easy make the final if it's considered eligible. Since nobody thought about voting for it last month (perhaps since it's listed as 1985 at AM) the rule seems a bit harsh in this case.

West End Girls is one of a few cases where I haven't used the release year for the first version on AM. A couple of other cases I can think of right now is Richard Hell's "Blank Generation" which was released on an EP in an early version in 1976, and Everything But the Girl's "Missing" which is listed as the Todd Terry Remix from 1995, a year after the album version (it's irrelevant here but I prefer the original version nowadays). WEG, BG and Missing differ from for example "Radio Free Europe" as they weren't hits at all, but maybe I should change them to 1984, 1976 and 1994 just to be standardized?

I wasn't aware of Katrina and the Waves 1983 album. That's a much more similar to its hit version, so I think it should definitely be filed under 1983 at AM.

Anyone knows any other early release dates not used at AM?

For the record, Charlie Driggs did vote for it last month, but I guess we should make an exception for "West End Girls" since it is probably a lock for the final poll and it's listed as 1985 on AM.

Well I personally don't mind Dylan. I know him and Mark E from the Fall and Waits himself all sound a little slurry like their boozed up but I like the Fall and Dylan has good songs. Instrumentation wise right now we have a great new record from These New Puritans and they go all over the place when it comes to instrumentation. So are some of my other faves like the Boo Radleys and Kate Bush who I'm praying makes a huge upset and takes '85. I don't think a woman or female led band has ever topped any poll on this forum. The Kim's, Deal and Gordon will come the closest even though they're lucky if they get more than 3 songs to sing lead on per album

Well it is really rare but it happened : Sinead O'Connor topped the 1990 song poll, Portishead the 94 album, the XX for 2009 (well, back then the band was half girl).
Also Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, PJ Harvey and Abba were the top inducted for the year they were inducted (though this is really biased given how long it took for ABBA and the Supremes to get inducted).
On a related topic : when do we do the inductions for 2009 to 2012 ? Unfortunately schleuse isn't on the forum anymore but if anyone can recreate the formula he used that would be great !

On the Tom Waits topic, I am not a big fan either but Rain Dogs is pretty good ; I don't get Swordfishtrombones and some of this other albums at all but Rain Dogs will make my list. But I like Hounds of Love much more ;)

Oh yeah speaking of Ms. Harvey I do remember her BEATING OUT Tom Waits for the #1 spot with Let England Shake in 2011 which is even more rare considering she's not just a woman but a woman in her 40s even though nowadays 40 somethings are doing better than ever. I think Kevin Shields turned 50 this year so MBV may be the oldest band to have a #1 album of the year. I personally am admittedly agist and don't expect to hear great work from an artist past their late 30s or early 40s so when they prove me wrong I'm pleasantly suprised.

I believe "Doolittle" was the top album of the decade the first time this poll was conducted, but, as you mentioned, Kim Deal doesn't have that many lead vocals.

Hmm, I dunno. To me the two versions of Walking On Sunshine are clearly different, and the original is inferior to the hitsingle version. If I had to vote in the '83 poll for the first version it wouldn't have made my top 15, but in this year's poll the '85 remake probably will. Of course, these discussions always pop up during the decade polls but I also recall that somewhere down the line we decided that the eligible year for an album of song will be the year when likely most people will vote for it, to give it maximum chance for proceeding to the final round. IMO 1985 is that year for Walking On Sunshine.

Please let's not be so radical and fussy about release dates :angry-nono:

There are rules, but the last rule is common sense.

"Waltzing Matilda" is in my top 5 too and I would be very disappointed to see it uneligible.

Come on, NOBODY knew that the Pogues song or the Husker Du song were an obscure B side in 84 or about "Walking On Sunshine" version in 1983!! It makes no sense.

Let us think about the consequences of this : those songs will have no chance to feature in the final tally just because everybody forgot to put them in their lists earlier. It is more unfair that the rule, so the rule here is wrong.

So like Mindrocker I would like to make them pass as 1985. As long as they qualify, what is wrong??

I will definitely include them in my list

Very well. I suppose I was being a bit of a Soup Nazi over the issue. So I'll count all of the songs I said weren't eligible for this year (except "Take on Me", since it almost qualified last month).
