Rating changes (Allmusic, Metacritic, etc.) - CLOSED!

Post by sidewinder572 »

Sometimes allmusic will change their ratings. I wasn't sure where to post this. So far I've found one

Metallica: Ride The Lightning now 5 stars

The thread is closed. I'm working on the site update and don't want to see any more rating changes at this stage.
Please wait until after the coming update to post more rating changes. Thanks!

You can expect the site update before the end of August.

Nice catch Sidewinder. Unfortunately it was one of those rare occasions where AMG just changed a single album rating rather than a wide selection. I wish they'd change ratings and even rewrite older reviews more often, especially where they could be more in line with the findings made by this site. In particular, there are still quite a number of 80's and 90s albums that could merit better attention. Instead they'd rather mess around changing their site yet again...

EDIT 1: Just noticed that you've updated all the rating changes from the old AllMusic and Error threads. Great stuff!

EDIT 2: Blondie - Plastic Letters = downgraded to 3.5 stars.

Looks like AMG have been upgrading the ratings of some of the older pop/R&B acts recently. I haven't noticed any others that AM has listed in the top 3000 apart from the following two albums..:

Janet Jackson - Control = upgraded to 5.0 stars
R. Kelly - 12 Play = upgraded to 5.0 stars

This is must be a very recent one as I was only checking it out a few weeks ago when it was still a 4.0 star rated album:

Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On = upgraded to 4.5 stars

As was mentioned upthread, Allmusic bumped up a lot of albums recently, mostly in the R&B genre. Off the top of my head, the following are among the albums newly granted 5 stars:
Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees
Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston
Johnny Gill - Johnny Gill
The Cars - The Cars
Keith Sweat - Make It Last Forever
Guy - Guy

Yeah, late to notifying ya on that one. The same goes to Ghostface Killah's & Adrian Younge's "Twelve Reasons to Die":
Current score - AllMusic Review
Original Score - Metacritic Score

There were only one-or-two 4.5's given for hip-hop projects last year and around the end of that time they upgraded a couple more to bolster that number. Really wish that they'd taken some time to also review "Run the Jewels" as I think that one would've been in with a good chance of making the grade.

There is a new AllMusic update for Fennesz, with his album Endless Summer going from 4.0 stars to 5.0 stars. It has also become their top album pick out of his entire oeuvre! It seems like reviewers François Couture and Fred Thomas have rewritten a couple of other reviews for Fennesz' 2000s albums (but not their scores) to accommodate for this change. The link to the album page provided below:

Seems like the AllMusic staff can't make up their minds over what to do with this album - They've reverted it back to its original 4.5 score. Yet the review reads much closer to the 3.5 star rating that it had attained in the last few months. In any case, hopefully this is the agreed final rating by their staff and that they won't keep on changing it around...

Nice catch digifuwill! Wow, it really seems like AllMusic brought the boot down on all those 4.5s they had given to the Drive-by Truckers. While they did give 'Southern Rock Opera' a full five star rating, they also down-rated many of their albums from 4.5 stars to more modest scores. AllMusic do tend to do this from time-to-time. For example, a few years ago most of Opeth's albums had 4.5 stars awarded to them that were subsequently downgraded. Anyway here are the other changes to the Drive-by Trucker albums that are also listed here on Acclaimed Music:

Drive-by Truckers - The Dirty South = downgraded to 4.0 stars
Drive-by Truckers - A Blessing and a Curse - downgraded to 3.5 stars

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't. Unless you're an avid visitor with a good memory for their scores then the closest the public gets to finding info' on the changes to their ratings is by looking through an album's page history on Wikipedia.

Correct. I'm familiar enough with allmusic's 5 star ratings for pop/rock, rap, r&b, and electronica that typically I can just run a search and scroll through the results to determine whether anything recently moved up to best-of-genre status.

I was hoping they'd reassess more 21st century albums but I guess not. Their ratings, formerly the most reliable in my opinion, aren't as valuable now anyway. Lately they've been granting 5 stars to a lot of minor reviewers' personal favorites, and most of those are out of nowhere and far from worthy. Glad they at least brought their search engine back, though.

There aren't much 5 stars in the 2000s (about 120 if you exclude compilations and best-of) so I am a bit surprise how much of them are not THAT acclaimed modern R&B albums : Beyonce's Bday, Usher's Confessions, The Foreign Exchange's Leave It All Behind and The-Dream's Love/Hate.
I'd say there also are albums more deserving of a 5 star rating in their respective genres than The Kills' Midnight Boom and Kid Koala's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

To be fair you've both hit upon an accurate criticism of AMG. The site may give off the pretense that it's a 'music guide' but really it's more of a comprehensive music database with a team of reviewers to provide their individual opinions on the entries.

Outside of the five-star ratings, I still take All Music ratings with a grain of whatever, as the ratings are mean to be compared to an act's other albums, not other albums, with the same rating, of other acts.

Just sayin'. Carry on.

Hasn't 'The Cold Vein' always (and rightfully) had a 4.5 star rating on Allmusic? I wouldn't be surprised if in their next reassessment of their hip-hop album ratings that AMG upgraded it to a full five stars.

Can't shake the feeling that this was mixed-up when they uploaded the review for FlyLo's newest album but..:
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles = upgraded to 4.5 stars
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma = downgraded to 4.0 stars

Bad Allmusic editorial team! Both deserve the minimum of a 4.5 star rating. :(

@Rob - Yeah, can confirm that it's a recent re-rating.

Seems like AMG's Fred Thomas has a penchant for not just reviewing an act's latest release but also going that extra mile by updating/rewriting the ratings of other albums in their oeuvre that were previously underrated. This week: Panda Bear!
