I cannot for the life of me figure out the placement of Deafheaven's Sunbather. I realize that both Metacritic and AnyDecentMusic are USA/UK favored websites, but its dominance on both of them makes it baffling that it isn't even in the top ten here.

Currently on ADM, Sunbather has an 8.9 and is the single highest rated album in the history of the site. Over at MC, it has a 95 and it by far the best widely-reviewed album of the year there and one of the best reviewed in the history of the site.

I recognize that its placement on this list keeps rising, but still...

Most of the top ten seem to be 'Resting on their laurels' albums, IMO.

But then again it's easier to get good critic reviews if you've already had a critically successful album.

I disagree with this. More reviews yes (which is a factor in the MCCh ranking) but not more positive reviews. Critics often give higher ratings to debut/"first major" albums, although I agree that sometime they don't realise the potential until after some time after the release.

That's also true, but you need to take more risks and be more different to get good reviews from a debut album.

I'm pretty surprised Justin Timberlake isn't doing so great on metacritic and even off the list on this chart. I do expect it to fare much higher on EOY lists.
