Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 4 - Round 2.8
Blimey! This is by far the best group of match-ups yet ... I can legitimately say that I REALLY like 7 of these, and the 8th I also enjoy. Very VERY difficult matchups here.
Scott Walker - Tilt vs. Miles Davis - A Tribute To Jack Johnson
This was a tossup, both are 9 out of 10 albums for me. In the end I'm going with Tilt because I'm in more of a Scott mood, and 2 long songs can be a lot of Miles.
Curtis Mayfield - There's No Place Like America Today vs. Broadcast - The Noise Made By People
There are a couple other Broadcast albums that would have given Curtis a tougher run, but in the end he wins fairly easily. It's still only my 5th favorite of his.
Spain - The Blue Moods Of Spain vs. Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Paix
These are lesser in my ranked list of this round, but still good. I'm going with the psychedelic oddities of Catherine Ribeiro + Aples here.
The Divine Comedy - Promenade vs. Tom Zé - Todos Os Olhos
Argh! This was almost as hard as Scott vs. Miles! Promenade is lovely but not quite Hannon's best; Todos is great and eccentric but not quite Zé's best. In the end Promenade wins because it's just a touch more consistent.
The nice thing about this round is I'll be happy about anyone moving on.
Here's my overall order:
Scott Walker - Tilt
Miles Davis - A Tribute To Jack Johnson
Curtis Mayfield - There's No Place Like America Today
The Divine Comedy - Promenade
Tom Zé - Todos Os Olhos
Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Paix
Broadcast - The Noise Made By People
Spain - The Blue Moods Of Spain
But there is not even that much space between Walker and Zé IMO.

Miles Davis - A Tribute To Jack Johnson
Broadcast - The Noise Made By People
Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes – Paix
The Divine Comedy – Promenade
The last three were fairly easy choices for me. The first matchup between Scott and Miles, however, I’ve been struggling with for days (and I’m still not sure I made the right choice). I love music that’s heavy on atmosphere, and both “Tilt” and “Jack Johnson” certainly qualify.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 4 - Round 2.8
1. Scott Walker - Tilt vs Miles Davis - A Tribute to Jack Johnson
Bleak, insular, ominous, unsettling, autumnal, brooding, harsh, menacing. These are some of the "album moods" used by allmusic to describe "Tilt." Surely this album does not provide exactly a pleasant listening but its disturbing beauty brings an intense sonic experience, that's why it gets my vote wholeheartedly, despite having enjoyed a lot "A Tribute to Jack Johnson," the only album from Miles' jazz-rock trilogy I never heard before, made (in Thom Jurek's words for allmusic) "in a single take, recorded as McLaughlin began riffing in the studio while waiting for Miles; it was picked up on by Henderson and Cobham, Hancock was ushered in to jump on a Hammond organ (he was passing through the building), and Miles rushed in at 2:19 and proceeded to play one of the longest, funkiest, knottiest, and most complex solos of his career."
2. Curtis Mayfield - There's No Place Like America Today vs. Broadcast - The Noise Made by People
Difficult decision. Curtis had better albums but this one was maybe the last of his set of masterpieces from the first half of the 70s, abounding in his lyrics with social concerns (this time even showcased on the awesome cover art) and in his trademark silky funk. So I vote for Curtis but I won't mind at all if Broadcast finally wins (they're getting a lot of votes), I love their first album, its retro-futuristic sound and "Trish Keenan's air-conditioned vocals" that "sometime suggest a robotized Sandie Shaw or Cilla Black, but her humanity peeks out on "Come on Let's Go" and "Papercuts."" (in Heather Phares' words for allmusic).
3. Spain - The Blue Moods of Spain vs. Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Paix
I like the album from Spain, particularly the cover art and the beautiful melodic line on the fourth song ("Untitled #1"), but its moody ambiance get monotonous and even boring after a while (IMO). Instead there is little place for bore in the Catherine Ribeiro album, imaginative arrangements in space-rock style backing feverish vocal renderings from Catherine, particularly on the title track. One of the most fascinating obscure ladies discovered by HRS.
4. The Divine Comedy - Promenade vs. Tom Zé - Todos os olhos
The Divine Comedy's third album is a masterpiece of chamber pop with an exquisite attention to detail and overtly romantic vocal performances from Neil Hannon, not forgetting the refreshing sense of humour ("The Book Lovers"). The highlights for me (and for Nicolas too seeing his all-time songs list) are the melancholic "The Summerhouse" and the emotional "Tonight We Fly." But I liked also a lot Tom Zé's fourth album, balancing from unsettling oddities like "A noite do meu bem" to playful singalong tunes like the title track. Refreshing originality.
