Greatest Really Short (1:45 or Less) Rock Songs

Post by Bruce »

CRITERIA - Songs must be 1:45 or shorter. This means on their original release either on an album, EP or a single. Songs were chosen and ranked based on initial and lasting popularity, acclaim and influence. Live versions of songs that were more than 1:45 when done first in the studio were only included if they became significant in their own right.

Gonna need help with this one. Here's what I have so far.

Maggie Mae - Beatles (0:39)
Ten Little Indians - Beach Boys (1:30)
Her Majesty - Beatles (0:23)
Mean Mr. Mustard - Beatles (1:06)
Polythene Pam - Beatles - (1:13)
The Man With All The Toys - Beach Boys (1:30)
Unchained Melody - Todd Duncan - (1:18)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (Reprise) (1:18)
I'm Thinking - Dave Clark Five (1:30)
Bluebirds Over The Mountain - Ersel Hickey (1:25)
Party - Elvis Presley (1:27)
Dig It - Beatles (0:51)
Do You Think It's Alright? - The Who (0:24)
Fiddle About - The Who (1:26)
There's a Doctor - The Who (0:25)
Smash the Mirror - The Who (1:20)
Miracle Cure - The Who (0:10)
Tommy's Holiday Camp - The Who (0:57)
Cocksuckers Ball - Clovers - (1:20)

I know there's a lot of short hip hop songs on albums. Any suggestions are welcome.

Guided By Voices has a ton of these. Game of Pricks was the first one that came to mind, but it turns out that one's actually 1:33. Eh, close enough.

The Mothers of Invention's "We're Only in it for the Money" album is full of super short songs. You might want to look at a few of them

Personal favorite (maybe my favorite GbV track, period): "Kicker of Elves." It's got an intro, two verses, three repetitions of the title chorus, and an outro, all in 1:04. It's a work of friggin' genius.

The Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime (their whole catalog, really) and Wire's Pink Flag are loaded with songs that fit the criteria here (as does "Another the Letter" from Wire's Chairs Missing, which clocks in at 1:07.

And let's not forget the Residents' Commercial Album, a concept album containing 40 songs all hovering right around the 60-second mark.

Do You Think It's Alright? might be one of my favourites of these. :)

There are a few from The SMiLE Sessions: Our Prayer (1:05), Gee (0:51), I'm in Great Shape (0:28), Barnyard (0:48), I Wanna Be Around/Workshop (1:23).
The Magnetic Fields made a bunch for 69 Love Songs; my favourites would have to be Reno Dakota (1:05), The Cactus Where Your Heart Should Be (1:11), and Very Funny (1:27).
Can't forget Liam Lynch's "United States of Whatever" (1:26) - I remember hearing it was the shortest song to hit the Billboard top 10 in the US.

Some more:

Animal Collective - College (0:53)
Bad Brains - Pay to Cum (1:26) <- There are a few more on this album but this is possibly the most well-known out of all of them.
Big Star - ST 100/6 (0:59)
Caetano Veloso - Superbacana (1:28) <- I LOVE this one! I forgot it was so short. :D
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman (1:02), classic.
Circle Jerks - Deny Everything (0:28) <- In fact, only one track on this album (Group Sex) is over 1:30.
Dead Kennedys - Forward to Death (1:22)
Electric Light Orchestra - Believe Me Now (1:21)
Genesis - Guide Vocal (1:22)
Kanye West - All of the Lights (Interlude) (1:02)
Liz Phair - Glory (1:30)
Minor Threat - Minor Threat (1:28)
Minutemen - Viet Nam (1:30)
Misfits - She (1:23)
Mothers of Invention - What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body? (1:03)
My Bloody Valentine - Touched (0:57), a pretty essential track on one of the most beautiful albums of all time.
Napalm Death - You Suffer (0:01) <- of course!
Neil Young - Till the Morning Comes (1:21)
Nick Drake - Horn (1:24) <- gorgeous.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Cannonball Rag (1:16)
Paul McCartney - That Lovely Linda (0:46)
Paul Simon - Hobo's Blues (1:21), w/ Stéphane Grappelli.
Pixies - Crackity Jones (1:24)
Primal Scream - Velocity Girl (1:22)
R. Kelly - Trapped in the Closet (Chapter 17) (1:11)
Scott Walker - 30 Century Man (1:29)
Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends (1:24)
Sly & The Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On (0:00) <- exclude it if you want, but I think it should count.
They Might Be Giants - Letterbox (1:21) <- in fact, They Might Be Giants have loads. Everything in their "Fingertips" suite is eligible.
The White Stripes - Little Room (0:50)
The Who - Heinz Baked Beans (1:00)
The Who - Medac (0:57)
Wire - Brazil (0:41)
Wire - Surgeon's Girl (1:18)
Wire - Mr. Suit (1:25)
Wire - Fragile (1:18) <- I love this album.

Aphex Twin - i (01:17)
One of the best short tracks I've ever listened to, in my opinion.

Oasis - Untitled Track #1 from What's the Story (Morning Glory) - (00:45)
I know Oasis is not very popular here, but I genuinely like this one.

Napalm Death - You Suffer (00:06)
Famously known as the shortest song in history, I personnally dislike this one, I don't think it should be called a song in the first place. It did garner some acclaim though. Their acclaimed "Scum" album is full of songs that fit the criterion but I don't feel like going through it at the moment, I don't like it.

Alain Bashung - Les Petits Enfants (01:13)
I guess there's next to no chance you will take this one, but Bashung is a consensus monument in French rock, I believe the song is not bad, and it is one of his few early songs he has played live for almost his entire career.

Mano Negra - Magic Dice (01:23)
Mano Negra - El Sur (01:00)
Manu Chao - Día Luna... Día Pena (01:30)
A few Manu Chao songs that fit your criterion. His solo track at least should be included in my opinion.

Katerine (feat. Bruno) - Les Leçons de belle manière (01:19)
This guy is a favourite of the French hipster critics, do whatever you feel with him. I like it though.

I Want To Marry A Lighthouse Keeper - Erika Eigen (1:04, my version at least) you might know this song from A Clockwork Orange.

Passive Manipulation - The White Stripes (0:35) Jack always liked to make Meg play this live.

The Message - M.I.A (0:59) substantially more relevant than when it was released.

March Of The Wolfmasters - Janelle Monáe (1:28) Maybe not a song? I would say it's important as it's our introduction to the world of Cindi Mayweather. It sets the tone for the EP and gives us vital information for the follow up albums (three of them now!).

The thing is while there are a lot of them, I'm not sure there are many that would be called influential or critically acclaimed.

Minor Threat - Minor Threat and Straight Edge are an exception, since they created the basis not only of a genre full of short songs (hardcore punk) but also of a lifestyle, the Straight Edge movement. So I'd call Minor Threat the musically anthemic one and Straight Edge the genre and style defining one.

As mentioned, songs from Pink Flag by Wire need to be included too since the album redefined the then young punk movement and was one of the very first brick building Post punk. Three Girl Rumba seems to be the consensus pick though I also like Fragile more.

I would add Pixies - Crackity Jones on the list of influential ones, though here it is also a whole influential album more than a specific song I guess.
Another extract from a groundbreaking influential album would be "Why Hip Hop Suck in '96" by DJ Shadow which answers the question in its title in 0:44 (would have actually needed less). More important to me is "Best Food Forward", the 0:50 intro of the same album that sets the mood for this whole revolutionary album.

Someone mentioned Bad Brains - Pay to Cum which also was quite influential, but I have it at 1:33

I don't really have a background for this one, but I always assumed Sickles and Hammers by Sebadoh ( 0:51) to be one of their most anthemic tracks.

Maybe Elastica - Vaseline (1:24), but once again might be a case of great album more than a specific great song.

Can TV show themes be included ? I mean : Hawai 5.0 theme song !!!!
Also you don't get much more iconic for my generation than Nerf Herder - Buffy the Vampire's Slayer Theme (1:06)

I have trouble fighting hip-hop examples. Most of the short tracks are skits and not real songs.
De La Soul - A little bit of Soap (0:57), comes from the album that pretty much defined hip-hop skits and is not even a skit !
On J Dilla - Donuts (941st most acclaimed album of all time), 19 of the 31 songs are below 1:30. This is the only album on the recent years that redefined instrumental hip-hop and the art of sampling, but I can't really say which is the most important track on there. I would probably go with One for Ghost (1:18) which also is the base for one of Ghostface Killah's most acclaimed tracks.

Personal favorite :
Crash and the Boys - We Hate You Please Die (00:59): written for the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack by Broken Social Scene, got a huge bassline.
Daniel Johnston - Devil Town (1:06) : quite a long list of short songs in Daniel Johnston's discography and this might be the nicest
Rancid - Antennas (1:19 ) : Rancid 2000 is for me the most underrated modern punk album, by critics at least, and some of the best tracks there last less and a minute and a half
Queens of the Stone Age - Six Shooters (1:19) : 3rd favorite album of all time, so here you go
Marcel et Son Orchestre - Ma Soeur (1:26) : just a song that explains that the singer likes to piss off his sister

The Millennium's "Prelude" is 1:18, and may be the best thing they did, and a top reason for the acclaim of Begin.

If that's the case, then the one from "The Wild Wild West" (between 00:49 and 00:53 according to the Youtube videos) could be added too, I think. It is quite iconic, and actually one of the few to not cross the 01:30 mark.
EDIT: And the Mission Impossible main theme of course (less than 1 minute)!!!
EDIT 2: Well, the single version appears to be longer, but if I understand correctly, it was a re-recording.

TV themes get tricky, especially around the definition of "rock" here.

There are lots of short interludes and filler out there. Here are a few more that stand enough on their own, IMO...

De La Soul - A Little Bit of Soap
King Missile - Cheesecake Truck (one of the most perfectly silly songs out there)
They Might Be Giants - "Shoehorn with Teeth" and "Mysterious Whisper" are probably the best
Van Halen - Spanish Fly
Public Enemy - Meet the G That Killed Me
Misfits - "Vampira" and "She"

There are several from Sufjan Stevens' Illnois that might be good enough, but I'll let that albums' big fans figure out which is best. There are also several from Pink Floyd's The Wall, possibly "Goodbye Cruel World" being most significant.

Some more, apologies if I have repeated anything...

Primal Scream - Velocity Girl
Ramones - Judy is a Punk (live) -- the original is just over 1:30, but this is even faster...The Ramones must have some representation IMO
Scott Walker - 30 Century Man
Bad Brains - Don't Need It
Clinic - Hippy Death Suite
Kyuss - Capsized
Pearl Jam - Lukin
The Vaselines - The Day I Was a Horse
Sparks - Propaganda
Elvis Costello - Welcome to the Working Week
Guided by Voices - A Salty Salute
The Stone Roses - Elizabeth My Dear
John Zorn - N.Y. Flat Top Box
Ween - I'm in the Mood to Move

No TV themes unless they were issued on a record then with the same time. Very few were. The TV versions are mainly edits of longer records.

From the Spotify playlist, it's only "Straight Edge" and "Three Girl Rhumba".

My personal picks are (or might not be) rock (the times are from Spotify):
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby (1:18)
Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares - Svatba (1:27)
James & Karin - Glada älgar (1:18)
Bernard Herrmann - The Murder (1:03)
Anton Karas - The Harry Lime Theme (1:28)
Jorge Ben - Balanca Pema (1:28)

Two eligible songs that I don't think have been mentioned are "Annie" and "Vaseline" from Elastica's debut album. Another favorite is Cunninlynguists - "So As Not to Wake You".

I thought #1 would be a shoo-in for the Twin Peaks Theme. #110? I also agree on The Persuaders, I'd put it in the top 10. I had never heard "Wild Wild West" (well, the TV theme) though.

The Wild, Wild West is there at #119.

Raised the limit to 1:45, which should give us some more great songs to choose from.

1:32 Stay - Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs

The label says 1:50 on "Stay" but it's really only 1:32.

Shortest number one hit in the history of the Billboard charts, if I'm not mistaken. (Probably because we don't have to sit through five minutes of Maurice condescending to his road crew before getting to the actual song.)

Well then Bad Brains - Pay to Cum (bubbling under in AM) is back in the game

The Beatles - Golden Slumbers (1:32) : though I don't like to take the last 3 songs of the Abbey Road medley separately, this is I think the finest part in it
The Beatles - Carry That Weight (1:37)

Ramones - Judy is a Punk (1:32)
Ramones - Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue (1:36)

Guided by Voices - Game of Pricks (1:33) : 2748th in AM, defining 90s lo-fi track

Dead Kennedy's - Stealing People's Mail (1:34) : Bruce I'm afraid as much as you dislike the genre, most of the great short songs are punk...

Soundgarden - Kickstand (1:34) : some contributors at DDD seems to really love Soundgarden so... (plus it's actually a pretty fine song)

Nirvana - Tourette's (1:35) : Kurt Cobain at his most delicate and tender ^^

Beastie Boys - Jimmy James (1:40) - I didn't find the BBoys songs under 1:30 relevant, but this one showcases the new style they found on Check Your Head pretty well

Public Enemy - Countdown to Armageddon (1:41) : the first track on It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, more an intro than a song but still iconic and very influential as many other hip-hop intros would later prove
De La Soul - Intro (1:41) : same as for Public Enemy, the first track on 3 Feet High and Rising creates skits for better and for worse, in a very humoristic way

Ben Harper - Letter Three (1:43) : this short instrumental soon became a staple of all Ben Harper live shows

Young Marble Giant - Final Day (1:44) : 2670s in AM, this outtake from Young Marble Giant's only album is considered a major song of both post punk and minimal music

Wire - Outdoor Miner (1:44) : 1333rd in AM, forget Three Girl Rumba, here is Wire's best song, a true wonder

Personal fav :
The Hives - Abra Cadaver (1:34)
Gorillaz - Punk (1:39)
Rancid - Axiom (1:40) : greatest punk bass solo ever
Queens of the Stone Age - Quick and to the Pointless (1:42) : even better than Six Shooters
System of a Down - Bounce (1:44) : call that generational ! One of the best known song of the most (and almost only) acclaimed new metal album
Modest Mouse - Wild Packs of Family Dogs (1:45)

2 other songs in AM Spotify playlist :
Chan Romero - The Hippy Hippy Shake (1:41) at 1890
And Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs which you mentioned, at 1394

Serge Gainsbourg - Valse de Melody (01:31)
The shortest track of the cult album "Histoire de Melody Nelson", surely a beautiful piece still.

Jacques Dutronc - J'ai tout lu, tout vu, tout bu (01:37)
Not the best known one from Dutronc, but a good sample of his work.

Jacques Dutronc - Fais pas ci, fais pas ça (01:41)
However, I strongly support this one, this is an absolute masterpiece that everyone know here in France, I really really hope you will include it.

John Lennon - Rip It Up/Ready Teddy medley (01:34)
The John Lennon fanboy speaking here, but this one is surely catchy.

The Who - Tommy, Can You Hear Me? (01:36)
The Who - Smash the Mirror (01:35)
These ones coincidentally follow each others on the album, surely an iconic moment of the most famous opera rock of all times.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Frownland (01:41)
I guess it's the best known track from Trout Mask Replica, since many of the people who tried to listen to it could not go further... (I did, and I don't regret it, but it was hard in the beginning)

I otherwise support the Ramones and Van Halen suggestions already cited, they are masterpieces.

Hmm, this makes things a bit more interesting!

The Adverts - Bored Teenagers (1:44), an anthem for a generation.
The Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coupe (1:41)
Brian Eno - Another Green World (1:41), pretty much the shining example of this album's beauty and influence on the ambient genre.
Buzzcocks - Oh Shit! (1:37)
The Fleetwoods - (He's) The Great Imposter (I have this as 1:31? Might be wrong)
Ghostface Killah - Saturday Nite (1:39)
NOW Guided by Voices - Game of Pricks (1:33) can go on the list! :D
Husker Du - Never Talking to You Again (1:41)
Pixies - I'm Amazed (1:43)
Ramones - Judy Is a Punk (1:32)
Ramones - Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue (1:36), either of them really, but I prefer this one.
The Stone Roses - Elizabeth My Dear (0:58)
The Streets - Who Dares Wins (0:34)
Todd Rundgren - Onomatopoeia (1:35), one of THE greatest short songs ever recorded. Honestly, I can't vouch for this one enough.
Todd Rundgren - Never Never Land (1:35), quite an acclaimed track off AWATS IIRC.
Todd Rundgren - Does Anybody Love You? (1:31)

Gotta back Bruce up here, Nassim - your comment is a little off base. From the self-profile that Bruce posted in the demographic thread:

"After about 1973 I don't like all that much music, although I did have a decent resurgence from about 1979-1983 with new wave/puck stuff and some R&B from that time."

The bold is mine. Unless there's some hockey-music genre with which I'm unfamiliar, I'm pretty sure he meant to write "punk."

"Outdoor Miner" and "Game of Pricks" are by far my two favorites in this category.

Black Sabbath - Embryo (0:28)
Judas Priest - The Hellion (0:45)
My Bloody Valentine - Touched (0:57)
Wire - Feeling Called Love (1:23)
Pretty Things - Loneliest Person (1:27)
The Undertones - Wrong Way (1:30)
Captain Beefheart - Frownland (1:41)
Husker Du - Never Talking to You Again (1:41)
Moondog - Lament #1 ("Bird's Lament") (1:44)

My primary conclusion from this thread, while it's a fun exercise, is that there aren't too many great songs below 1:45.

Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight as someone has already mentioned. Her Majesty on the other hand is a very average song. Just because it's by the Beatles doesn't make it a great song. But I mean I do think they're the greatest artist of all time and it's not even close.

Trout Mask Replica has 3 songs shorter than 1:45 and other songs are pretty short too. Actually you could say they're not great songs individually and you have to listen to the whole album to get the greatness.
I feel like that

The fact that you called the Sex Pistols unlistenable and just noise and your rant about how high the Ramones and the Sex Pistols are in Rolling Stones top 100 artists.
Plus I really can't picture you as a fan of Minor Threat, Black Flag or the Dead Kennedys.
