Songs and Albums of 1987 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

Image

Welcome to another edition of the ongoing poll to find the best songs and albums from each year of the 80’s! This month, 1987 is up.

By now, you know what to do. List your favorite albums and songs (or only one of the two if you are so inclined) of the year 1987. Only the top 15 will be counted, but we all love long lists with a bunch of obscure gems. You also can’t just list your two favorite songs from the year, because only lists with at least 5 songs/albums will be recognized for the poll.

We also have a recommendation thread where you can share your favorites and see what everyone else likes from this year.

The deadline is midnight (UTC/Forum Time) on October 1st.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be used.

Please use the following format when posting your list:

Rank. Artist - Album/Song

EPs and compilations are not albums. Discrepancies with this matter as well as the year of a release will be determined by RateYourMusic.

How do we handle The House of Love's "Shine On", which was released as a single and achieved a lot of acclaim in 1987, but also re-released in a superior version in 1990? Can I put the song in this year's list and let its position reflect my feelings for the 1990 version?

I guess that would make it eligible for this year. Did you vote for it in the 1990 poll last year?

It is on AM, but it's listed as "Come On Pilgrim EP" (which is odd because I was under the impression that EPs were ineligible for AM in the first place). Given that both sources (AM and RYM) call it an EP, it's ineligible. But I'm now curious as to why it's on AM.

EPs are difficult. For the sake of AM, I hate them.

For most lists EPs have probably not been taken into account by the critics in the first place, and thus there is probably a bias against EPs at AM.

I have wanted to give all kinds of original recordings the same chance to be included at AM though, either in the albums list or in the songs list. EPs have usually been included among albums by US critics (e.g. Minor Threat) and among singles by UK critics (e.g. My Bloody Valentine). I think this is because US EPs are usually viewed as short albums, while EPs by UK artists are basically marketed as singles although they have more than two tracks. There might have been a general difference in rpm speed on the vinyls as well. But this is fuzzy territory to me. Someone may have a clearer view on this than I have.

I can see the question about the exclusion of compilation coming up again here. But the way I see it is that the music on artist compilation already had its chance on the original albums or singles.

The problem possibly stems from the fact that many records which are now considered EP´s back then were called mini-albums. An EP was still an item with just two songs on each side. So, what is and what isn´t an EP is very arbitrary, and maybe also a bit of a generational thing. I for one have trouble calling something an EP if it has more than 25 minutes of music on it. And to make matters more complicated, while 80s/90s mini-albums today are called EPs, in many cases they have a longer running time than, say, any of the early Beach Boys albums who curiously are still treated as bonafide albums. How to solve the problem of the EP vs. album I really don´t know, I´m leaving that to the one who runs the poll. The only thing I can say is just follow your gut feeling.

I personally love EPs. They keep it short and to point, leaving out the fat and filler you usually encounter on complete albums. The very best work of many artists can be found on EPs or singles. If you´re only limiting yourself to albums youre missing out on a whole chunk of great music (although they nowadays frequently appear as bonus tracks on re-issues).

BTW, I noticed Public Enemy´s Bring The Noise is included on a couple of lists. I´m pretty positive that´s a 1988 song. Not only from my own memory but it´s also listed as such on most music sites.

Wikipedia says: "It was included on the soundtrack of the 1987 film Less Than Zero and was also released as a single that year."

For my money, the first half of the 80s, aside from 1981, utterly trounce the decade's second half. But 1987 is the exception to the rule. It was a great year for Top 40 and also boasted several landmark albums. I would rank 1987 only behind 1982, 1983, and 1984 for the decade.

I don’t want to seem too “chauvinist”, but the fact is that 1987 is, without doubt, the best year in the history of Spanish pop-rock music. Many of the most important artists of the eighties and nineties (Radio Futura, Esclarecidos, Los Locos, Gabinete Caligari, Malevaje, Nacha Pop, La Granja) released the best albums of their careers, some of them absolute masterpieces. Well just about a day left to vote, and the turnout hasn't been that great so far. Hopefully you're all going to post your lists in the next 24 hours (I love being swamped with ten lists at once ). 1987 might be my favorite year of the decade. 12. U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
13. Bruce Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise
14. Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror

And ten more great songs that I didn't feel like ranking:

Guns N' Roses - My Michelle
Guns N' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel
