The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full list
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
Is it the first time we have a soul artist in top 10? Feels pretty great, even though he is not on my list.
IMO some very good discussion in this thread, it's a shame that it sometimes causes negative emotions.

#102 - Antoine "Fats" Domino Jr.
Unfortunately my number one listing was not enough to get Fats Domino into the top 100 here. I'd like to know how many other lists he was on. It may just be one other list (Hymie).
Fats first record (The Fat Man) was released in the first week of 1950. He went on to be, BY FAR, the most popular R&B act of the 1950s, and continued to maintain that poularity through 1962 or so. Here's a link to the Fats Domino tribute page that I did for Digital Dream Door:

With a nice overview written by another editor on the site, Sampson.

It's exciting to see two new acts in the top 10, even if they weren't exactly expected. PF in particular, who I thought were quite popular on this forum but not THAT loved.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
The top 10 is not going to look anything at all like I expected (which is good and bad). Mostly the presence of PF is shocking, but the Velvet Underground finishing so low was rather shocking.
And of course, for me personally, seeing Jimi drop is saddening.

Yeah, it is too bad about Jimi's drop. It would have been great seeing him make the Top 10 finally.

Here's one of my favorites. The Quarrymen at George's brother's wedding in 1958, George was only 15.DocBrown wrote:A NICE picture? I think this may be the greatest picture ever. I'm not a fan of the 70's and 80's; for me they were the lost years. But I read this post before leaving for work this morning and lo and behold, on shuffle I heardMoonbeam wrote: I'm sad to see that I'm the only one who voted for the following:
The Sound
Gary Numan/Tubeway Army
Kim Wilde
Bat for Lashes
The Human League
Bootsy's Rubber Band
Annie Lennox
Annie
Kylie Minogue
On the other hand, I'm quite chuffed to see that at least one other person voted for:
Grace Jones
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Janet Jackson (!)
I'm also happy to see Eurythmics in the top 150. Henrik, we'll get them into the top 100 at some stage!
Gary Numan (sampled on a Lana Del Ray remix)
Kim Wilde (who always makes me go "who is this? OOOOhhhhh!)
Bat For Lashes (not a new wave artist... the track was from last year's Haunted Man)
Annie Lennox, and
Grace Jones.

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
That's funny I claim to loathe the 80s too when about half my top 10 list were big in the 80s or maybe scored a hit or two in around the 89 mark which is my favorite year of the 80s by far. It's the Richard Blade synth stuff that used to make me cringe up until auto tune. At least ONE is an actual instrument. And I believe Siouxsie made my top 25 so you're welcome Moobeam :)Anyway if it weren't for Siouxsie there wouldn't be no Cocteau Twins and without the Cocteau Twins there wouldn't be an MBV so their influence is quite monumental.

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
That's like saying that without Nico there wouldn't be no Siouxsie. or without Patti Smith no Siouxsie, for the way of singing. or I'd even point out Lydia Lunch, that was doing great post-punk in New York around the same time the Banshees came out, as a potential influence on many bands people listen and rush to compare to Siouxsie first. Influence is a monumental thing in itself, but in a range of influences, there shouldn't be any maximization of a minor one that reaches you for secondary matters; there were much more monumental influences to reach My Bloody Valentine directly than her, Cocteau Twins, as an example. Even if you perceive influence as some kind of DNA, some genes are downplayed and others are not. Siouxsie is one of the great underrated artists of her generation, especially as a female artist. Never agreed with the whole acclaim centralizing on The Scream. Also, some of her singles deserve more acclaim than they usually receive, even her equivocated political songs like Arabian Knights were filled with great structure. I do think that one of Moonbeam's favorite Siouxsie recordings, A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, sounds dated in production in comparison to the more guitar-driven predecessors and some of the more well-produced follow-ups, though not in scope nor ambition; I admire that record for expanding the palette of sounds that would compose the next Banshees records. I can see the connection between Siouxsie and the Jesus and Mary Chain interpolating Be My Baby into their respective drumming patterns for a song or two, but I believe that the Cocteau Twins only became something special when they decided to part from their previous post-punk influences to explore new kinds of productions. I think Siouxsie has a largely unspoken immediate influence on Jangle Pop and plenty of the more sophisticated post-punk bands to arrive during the 00s revival points to her too, most recently, Savages, but I also feel, that like Kate Bush, some are quick enough to compare other females to her because of more trivial matters -- and that sucks, because there's plenty who were influenced sonically and you unconsciously limits the influence of a female artist to the behavior of another, never acknowledging the influence on other sexes nor spheres of arts. I'd vote for both of them, but i'm pleased one made the top 100 through.luvulongTIM wrote: Anyway if it weren't for Siouxsie there wouldn't be no Cocteau Twins and without the Cocteau Twins there wouldn't be an MBV so their influence is quite monumental.

Given who's left, I guess you all expected David Bowie not to be able to get any higher, and it's true that the top 4 artists have been in the lead almost since the beginning (3 votes in, the top 5 was James Brown and the current top 4 I think). But to be fair, Bowie, the artist with the 2nd highest number of votes, didn't end that far from the 4th place (66 points, quite a lot but "only" 5% of its total score)

Quite a leap in amount of votes for Bowie (32/35 ballots!) compared to all of the other acts, save for the VU (29 ballots). Not surprising at all, though.

In fact, when I sent my list to Nassim, I made clear that it was a mix between greatness and my favorites. What happens is that I always heard more albuns and songs of artists known as "greatests", although I like countless artists, and my taste is VERY eclectic.pauldrach wrote:Which further substantiates my suspicion that Bruno simply submitted DDD's greatest rock artists list.Nassim wrote:He got a third top 20 vote thanks to Bruno.Bruce wrote: Unfortunately my number one listing was not enough to get Fats Domino into the top 100 here. The Brian's(DDD) list is good and looks very much like the one I sent, but I would make some changes.
And to be clear about, I really like Fats.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT:
I do not have my spreadsheet to guide me, only my memory.
But, it seems as if we are headed to a top four comprising:
1) Beatles
2) Rolling Stones
3) Bob Dylan and
4) Radiohead
I do not expect that it is very likely that the order above is correct, it is merely conjecture.

Realy good placement of Low by the way. I know some AMFers like them a lot and they did quite well in the moderately acclaimed game, but I didnt expect they would actually have chance to get a place in the top 100. They almost made it. Nice surprise.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
I wonder if Bob Dylan can sneak into the number two spot. I think that's the only real question left, as one and four are rather apparent.

Yes, I don't know who the apparent no. 4 would be.
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
I can't imagine The Stones (can we use their names at this point? There's four acts left) beating either Dylan or Radiohead on this forum. I could be wrong.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
I have to agree with both PlasticRam and Henrik here. Aside from the #1, I would say that numbers 2-4 are pretty much up for grabs in terms of order. This poll has been full of so many surprises that anything could happen.

Nassim, unless Whuntva actually placed Radiohead at #1, shouldn't he go behind Slick instead?
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
Wow, that's shocking. I figured Radiohead would transcend the swoon of artists since the 90's (Nirvana did). I sincerely expected them to be narrowly ahead or behind Dylan.

I didn't mean to suggest anything different. I just noticed there seemed to be a lot of congruency. What you say in the first part of that sentence definitely is also true for myself and it shows especially towards the bottom of my list as well.Bruno wrote:What happens is that I always heard more albuns and songs of artists known as "greatests", although I like countless artists, and my taste is VERY eclectic.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
there is a classic rock revival in this forum that I really like,. Not that I don't like Radiohead or VU, but the alternative/indie credo is somehow challenged by other tastes. Elvis in the top 20, Bruce at #7 is something I really appreciate. That makes a change.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
I was really hoping for Radiohead to make the top 3, but I really can't scoff at a number 4 position.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
Radiohead at #4 is surprising, but I had them at #5, so they're pretty close to my placement. OK.

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
60 : Otis Redding
For the most part the 1960s have been a barren wasteland for me musically. Despite my love of funk, soul never really clicked for me for quite some time. Stevie Wonder was a gateway for me, but his music features so much funk that it hardly felt like some expansion of my musical periphery. Then I gave Otis Redding a try, and boy, am I glad I did! There is so much grit, so many guts, and so much fire in his delivery that I was helpless to resist. His music always makes me feel better, and that is a gift that means more to me with each passing year.
59 : Little Richard
An early pioneer who seems well worthy of his respect.
58 : Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
A very interesting band indeed, but one I haven't given much time to beyond "Where the Wild Roses Grow". I can see myself liking them quite a bit, though.
57 : Sufjan Stevens
As with Otis Redding, Sufjan Stevens is another artist who has challenged my biases and therefore broadened my horizons. I remember going to a record store and listening to previews of Seven Swans through headphones (remember those days?!), and I was disappointed by the folkiness. The subsequent craze that ensued when Illinois was released didn't register for that reason, but I decided to give Illinois a few years later. When the cinematic and orchestral beauty made its way to my ears, I was a changed person. This music had such buoyancy, such color, such feeling! I returned to Seven Swans and found I quite liked it, too! But then The Age of Adz came out, and I was floored. Every squelching synth and volcanic beat felt like a weapon in a crazy, manic war for his soul and his sanity, and I was shocked. I hadn't anticipated it being possible that an album could knock The ArchAndroid off of my perch for 2010, but The Age of Adz worked its way into my top 20 all-time, a rare feat indeed. A concert the following year with Sufjan cast in neon tape and doing robot dances sealed the deal. I was in lurrrve.
56 : Sly & The Family Stone
One of the forefathers of one of my very favorite genres, it's a bit strange that Sly & the Family Stone haven't quite registered with me yet after a few albums. It's bound to change at some point, though, right?

I am having some difficulty understanding the strength of Lush in this poll.
I would appreciate it if those who voted for Lush could recommend a few songs other than the sole song De Luxe that is listed as bubbling under. While De Luxe is enjoyable enough it is not a song that wows me yet. Clearly De Luxe has impressed a number of voters though.

I did not vote for Lush, but they have been a band I have always enjoyed. The early stuff plays well with bands like Cocteau Twins, MBV, The Sundays, Catherine Wheel's 1st album and my personal favorite Ride. Try "Nothing Natural", "For Love" and "Sweetness and Light" to get a real grasp. Their '92 album 'Spooky' evolves a little bit and is a very enjoyable album without any standout singles. Their later work is more aggressive and fit more with the Britpop scene of the mid 90's, "Ladykillers", "Single Girl" and my favorite song from them "Hypocrite" are all outstanding.Henry wrote:I am having some difficulty understanding the strength of Lush in this poll.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for saying you enjoyed their later work in britpop. That's exactly why they were my #....well what do you think? Seen my profile logo?;) They evolved so beautifully but not as much as their Britpop era haters would like to believe. They were always very pop and twee oriented and the genre was fading so they had to change it up dissolve with the genre. My faves are 500 (Shake Baby Shake) which may be my favorite song of all time, Lovelife, Hypocrite, Nothing Natural and there Rubinoos cover I Want to Be You Girlfriend. People say Avril ripped this particular version off but the broad can't even pronounce BOWIE so you really thing she's ever heard of Lush?
But yeah you're right Deluxe is not their best by a long shot. There's a lot of bands that have odd selections as their most acclaimed single like (not gonna start a fight this time hopefully;) B&S' Dylan in the Movies. Well BEFORE the last update it was their most acclaimed single but probably my 2nd least favorite song off ...Sinister. Or even the bubbler I Know it's Over by the Smiths. P.U!!!!!!
Anyway check out their Best Of cd, Ciao! There is not one bad song off of it.It's one of the greatest compilation cds you'll ever hear. Think the Primitives meets the Cocteau Twins both who also made my top 10.

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
55 : Joni Mitchell
Another artist who I respect more than I enjoy. She definitely had a unique voice in the 70s, but my aversion to folk has prevented me from exploring her catalogue much. That said, the piano-based songs on Blue are quite nice, and I imagine I might appreciate her jazzier stuff.
54 : Queen
I've never been a fan - their music seems to be one big pastiche of genres I think are done much better by other artists, be it glam, funk or dance-pop. I can see that Freddie Mercury was a great showman and that they have talent, but their music generally leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
53 : Portishead
My wife is somewhat of a fan and I've heard and appreciated Dummy, but I don't think I've heard much else besides a few assorted songs from their most recent album. I'm happy to see another female-helmed artist ranking highly, though.
52 : The Doors
There seems to be a great divide in opinion about The Doors - they have some very devoted fans but also some very vocal detractors, disparaging them as some sort of adolescent, pompous dross. I can see that they made music for young people, but there's something about the heat of summer that boils in my blood that makes their lustful rampages hit the right spot. Plus, "Riders on the Storm" will always rank among my very favorite songs of the 70s.
51 : Ray Charles
I think it's about high time I get around to listen to his music - I can't recall any of his performances aside from "Georgia on My Mind". He's undoubtedly a massive figure in musical history well worth this spot (and perhaps more), but I haven't gotten around to giving his music a shot yet.
50 : The White Stripes
It seems that The Stripes have maintained their fan fervor at the expense of artists I far prefer such as Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes. I tend to either really like or dislike their music, with "Seven Nation Army" and "Fell in Love With a Girl" being my favorites.
49 : Outkast
Certainly one of the most vibrant and innovative forces in hip hop history, OutKast is well worthy of this spot. Aquemini is my favorite by them, but they have plenty of songs I quite love elsewhere, including the often overlooked "The Whole World", "The Way You Move", "Prototype" and "Bowtie. Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and Salt-n-Pepa are my favorite hip hop artists, but OutKast isn't too far behind.
48 : Van Morrison
I thought for a long time that I'd despise Van Morrison - "Brown Eyed Girl" makes me cringe like few other songs. But my exposure to some of his prettier stuff in the World Cup game turned my head. He may never be a favorite of mine, but I have a lot more respect for him than I initially thought.
47 : Chuck Berry
Is it strange that I'm happy to see him this high despite not ranking any of his songs among my favorites? Another legend who I appreciate from a distance and would probably enjoy to some degree if given the chance.
46 : Public Enemy
I tend to prefer my hip hop to be playful and fun, but I recognize that the firestorm that followed Public Enemy was well-deserved.

45 : Joy Division
For quite some time I didn't think I liked Joy Division despite absolutely loving New Order. Their sound struck me as too aggressive and angry. Over time, though, I really grew to not only appreciate them, but love them. The dichotomy of tracks like "Disorder" and "Isolation", with such great energy contrasting with such troubled emotions, is wonderful, while "New Dawn Fades" and "Day of the Lords" really hit me after my dad died. And while their sound generally differs from New Order, tracks like "Atmosphere" blur the lines admirably!
44 : Beastie Boys
They definitely work on the side of the hip hop spectrum that I like with their audacious, brash fun. "Intergalactic" is my favorite, but so many of their songs sprint through the speakers with vibrant panache.
43 : The Talking Heads
I really struggled with David Byrne's voice for a long time, but persistence wore me down. Speaking in Tongues was the first breakthrough, and its synth funk overtimes make it remain my favorite, with tracks like "Pull Up the Roots", "Making Flippy Floppy" and "Girlfriend Is Better" easily outpacing critical darlings like "Psycho Killer" and "Once in a Lifetime" for me. And "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" may be the most gorgeous love song ever written! Remain in Light was my next indulgence, and the intricate rhythms of tracks like "Born Under Punches" and "The Great Curve" are a wonder to behold. By the time I got to Fear of Music, there was no more sense in denying it - I really love this band!
42 : Madonna
As long as I can remember paying attention to music, Madonna was there. Early hits like "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl" have been with me as long as I can remember, and when I first became passionate about music in 1989, Like a Prayer was there to guide my journey as one of the most perfect pop albums ever recorded. Unlike so many of my favorite artists of the 80s who faded into obscurity in the 90s, Madonna remained strong, and when I started to spread my wings after high school in 1998, Ray of Light felt like much more than a mere album to me, but a joyful signpost of where I had been and the limitless road ahead. Her presence in my life has been so constant that she feels like an older sister. I don't know that any female pop artist can have the same sort of long-lasting, envelope-pushing, culture-defining impact.
41 : Simon & Garfunkel
I'm pretty ambivalent about these guys. Their harmonies are sweet, but beyond that, they don't do anything for me.

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
Great to see Bob and the Stones climb a spot since last year. Just curious, did my ballot also include the Beatles? I have them at #109 in my current list, I must have sent an older version.
Thanks for all the work Nassim!

Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
I'm a little late to this one (that's what I get for sleeping in on weekends!), but I wanted to recommend four songs as well, two each off my favorite Lush albums, "Split" and "Lovelife." Each of these songs (I think) shows the range of what they can do as far as mood: "Light From a Dead Star" (eerie and unsettling); "Undertow" (attitude and distortion); "Heavenly Nobodies" (especially relevant in today's celebrity-obsessed world); and "Papasan" (a heart-breaking ballad). Lush isn't for all tastes, but I'd be interested in hearing what you think of each of these. (By the way, I'm not so sure Lush impressed a large number of voters, since I had them rather high. But then I was the one who voted for Evanescence, so take that for what it's worth...)Henry wrote:I am having some difficulty understanding the strength of Lush in this poll.
I would appreciate it if those who voted for Lush could recommend a few songs other than the sole song De Luxe that is listed as bubbling under. While De Luxe is enjoyable enough it is not a song that wows me yet. Clearly De Luxe has impressed a number of voters though.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
Absolutely awesome work, Nassim, with a lot of really nice surprises throughout. By the way, I know it's been said a couple of times already, but I loved your choices of pictures throughout (many, of which, I'd never seen before). You definitely have an artistic eye, and I'd love to walk through a gallery featuring nothing but the photos featured in this presentation. Now that would be my idea of a Hall of Fame! Thanks again!

Wow, 34 out of 35 lists for The Beatles. What a shutout.
Re: The Acclaimed Music Artists Poll 2013 : top 20 and full
Great job Nassim. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
I would be very interested in seeing the list extended to a larger number, perhaps 1000 if that wouldn't be too much trouble.

I think we need more voters if it's gonna be a viable top 1000.Henry wrote:Great job Nassim. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
