Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2013

It's that time of year again, where early lists start to trickle out long before they could have possibly listened to everything and music fans and critics everywhere catalog and categorize exactly what music that came out in the current calendar year is the most notable.

And we start up the companion poll to the Best Moderately Acclaimed Album poll to find the best critically ignored album released in the same time frame.

Last year's winner, Ondatropica - Ondatropica went on to some success in the most recent BMAA bracket.

The rules are simple. Everybody gets to nominate one album for consideration in the poll. The album must have come out in 2013, and it must not be in the top 50 in Mega-critic. (Also, albums that are too new to be in Mega-Critic but obviously will be are out. Use your own judgment.) You have until December 1st to nominate your album. Then, once all the albums have been announced, you have until December 31st to submit a ranked list of all of those albums you have heard. The winner will be decided based on a formula that only takes ranked comparisons and not absolute positions into account, so the number of ballots an album appears on will not help or hurt its final ranking.

I'll go with my favorite album so far this year:

Youth Lagoon - Wondrous Bughouse

currently #58 on the chart.

Thanks!

Just saw the new Megacritic update. I hope we can all agree that Reflektor is probably going to climb those four more spaces to be ineligible for this. ;)

I'll nominate Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer - Child Ballads

New by Paul McCartney. It's not on the Metacritic list at all, but I assume it's eligible?

Yes, anything that is not in the top 50 on that list, either came out in 2013 or became widely available for the first time in 2013, and will probably not rise into the top 50 is eligible.

My entry is Justin Timberlakes' "The 20/20 Experience", which surprisingly is not on the Metacritic chart.

I'd like to nominate the album by DJ Koze: "Amygdala", a "house/techno" record which sounds experimental and accessible at the same time.

Very tough to choose just one, but after much deliberation, I recommend Shulamith by Poliça. Kind of trip-hoppy electronica from Minnesota of all places. Justin Vernon calls them "...the best band I've ever heard."

Thanks Romain but Deezer is not available in the US. Maybe if I wait it'll show up in Grooveshark or there's some online streaming for it.

I'm hoping to see Wooden Wand-Blood Oaths Of The New Blues pop up on some year end lists. Devastatingly bleak but honest. Jason Isbell Southeastern also a moderate winner that should be higher.

Seriously? You ordered the album without listening before? I hope that the deception will not be too high, it's not the kind of album I love usually

Hey, I figure if I'll blind buy Reflektor, why not blind buy people's recommendations?

The record buying public has this strange idea that understanding the lyrics is important to enjoying the way music sounds, unless the music happens to be heavy metal. So definitely can't trust an esoteric French album to ever avail itself to me through Americans streaming services.

This turnout is awesome, last year there were only 13 nominations! :)

Listened to Child Of Lov. Any TV On The Radio connection with that band? I'm having trouble researching them, but they sound very distinctly TVOTR infuenced.

I'm also having trouble finding Run the Jewels, is it marketed under a different band name?

The Maze is definitely an interesting album. I'm not sure why it would be called an 80s album except for the synths.

Romain, for perspective, I have bought about 35 CDs this year. Even if it turns out not to be one of my favorites of the year I consider it worth the purchase as long as it's good enough that I want to have a permanent copy.

That's why I couldn't find it, artist name Run The Jewels. I was searching El-P and Killer Mike.

One more week to make nominations! Turnout is great so far with 22 nominations, here is the current list:

You will have all month of December to listen to as many of these albums you have time for and rank from favorite to least favorite. This will be ranked by the Schulze method, which is basically a won/lost oriented method instead of a points method, so not listing an album with neither help nor hurt it.

Brad : Youth Lagoon - Wondrous Bughouse
Jirin : Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer - Child Ballads
PlasticRam : Paul McCartney - New
Nick : Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
Romain : Chateau Marmont - The Maze
HRS : Jenny Hval - Innocence is Kinky
