Reda Caire (real name Joseph Gandhour), born in Cairo, Egypt, on February 4, 1905 and died on September 9, 1963 in Clermont-Ferrand, is a popular singer of the 1930s.

He is the son of Bey Gandhour, a senior Egyptian government official, and an heiress of the Belgian nobility (his mother belonged to the Berner-Renoz de Walden family, one of the oldest families of the Belgian nobility).

His stage name is inspired by his Egyptian origins (Reda, Egyptian first name, and Caire by the name of his birthplace - Cairo). He started working in an operetta troupe in Lyon at the age of twenty, then made his profession out of it in 1928. In 1934, after "going up" to Paris, he recorded Je voudrais un petit bateau (A. Parera - Robert Valaire) and Les Beaux Dimanches de printemps (J. Laurent, G. Gabaroche). These two successes consecrated him king of the music hall, alongside Maurice Chevalier, whom he surpassed, it seems, in popularity. It remained popular until the late 1950s. His manager is Émile Audiffred.

Throughout his career, Reda Caire remained faithful to the world of operetta, which had seen him begin. He is a dazzling Prince Danilo in The Merry Widow, devotes himself to a modern and quality repertoire and creates, in Paris, shortly before the Second World War, Balalaika.

At the outbreak of war, the Odéon de Marseille (a Mecca for the so-called Marseille operettas of René Sarvil and Émile Audiffred) saw him create, alongside Pierre Larquey and Milly Mathis, Destination inconnue, a work by one of his favourite authors, Gaston Gabaroche.

In 1962, he gave a final recital at the Théâtre du Gymnase in Marseille.

He died at the age of fifty-eight from cardiac arrest on September 9, 1963 in Clermont-Ferrand.

He was buried in the village of Saint-Zacharie during a funeral attended by his friend Fernandel, among others.

Later, his name was given to the main square of the village (Reda-Caire Square).

"Auprès de ma blonde" (French for "Next to My Girlfriend") or "Le Prisonnier de Hollande" ("The Prisoner of Holland") is a popular chanson dating to the 17th century. The song tells the story of a lady who laments to the birds in her father's garden that her husband is a prisoner in Holland. It appeared during or soon after the Franco-Dutch War (1672–78), during the reign of Louis XIV, when French sailors and soldiers were commonly imprisoned in the Netherlands. It is often attributed to André Joubert du Collet, lieutenant of the royal navy during the reign of Louis XIV: taken prisoner by the Dutch, he composed it after his liberation in 1704.

The song's quick pace and lively melody made it well-suited to military marches, and it is still commonly played at parades. For the same reasons, it gained widespread popularity as a drinking song and nursery rhyme.

Film: The song is heard during the parade scenes at the end of The Day of the Jackal. An English version of the song, titled "I love only one girl" ("the one I've got my arms around"), was sung by Elvis Presley in the 1967 film Double Trouble. (Lyrics for the Elvis version were by American songwriters Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett.) In the 1952 musical comedy film April in Paris, Doris Day and Claude Dauphin sing (and dance to) this song in the kitchen of a French ocean liner. The melody is hummed by actors Ian Holm and Christopher Lambert in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. It is heard in the exit music of the 1938 film, "Marie Antoinette," starring Norma Shearer. The song is also sung by Christine Daaé in the 1990 miniseries The Phantom of the Opera.
Television: The song appeared in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, "Family" and '"Final Mission". It also appeared in the British TV movie Sharpe's Revenge being sung by General Calvet's men to Richard Sharpe and Lucille. The song appears as background music in a Marseille cafe in Alfred Hitchcock Presents, episode No. 3.22 of 2 March 1958 "The Return of the Hero". It's also sung by Sarah Moffatt in two episodes of Upstairs, Downstairs. Its refrain also serves as a central theme in one episode of "Have Gun Will Travel" Season 6, Episode 27 (title: The Savages). It is also found in Starsky & Hutch season 4 episode 8, "Dandruff".
Books: Auprès de ma blonde is the title of a 1972 detective novel by Nicolas Freeling featuring Commissaris Van der Valk, and his wife Arlette of Amsterdam.
In Dorothy L. Sayers' novel Busman's Honeymoon, the newly married Lord Peter Wimsey sings the song to express his happiness.
In Roger Zelazny's book Nine Princes in Amber, Corwin claims to have been the one who composed the tune to "Auprès de ma blonde".
In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, he hums the tune in a war-time scenario.
A French singer sings this song in the court of Prinny, in the movie "The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel." during a ball scene. The time is supposed to be that of The Terror, and the enthusiasm with which this song is greeted shows that the British aristocracy never heard it before. That is a time anachronism because this chanson existed in the 17th century.
In Missing Person by Patrick Modiano, the tune is mentioned briefly, towards the end of the novel, in Chapter 43.

The album Eau was released on 21 March 2005 under the label Pias. There is still one week left in the album sales ranking in France, reaching 195th place. The albumrock webzine describes the album as an "interesting synthesis of rock, metal, and electro", the latter genre being "more subtly integrated into the tracks". Guitarist Sébastien Eychenne left the band that same year and was replaced by Benjamin Lartigue. Two video clips are made for the titles La Morale de la fable et À qui je nuisonne me pardonne. On May 29, 2006, it was the turn of the double album Digital Reactivation to be released in the digipack edition. It consists of a disc of remixes of the tracks from the album Eau by groups from the metal, punk and electro scenes including No One Is Innocent, Mass Hysteria, Sybreed, Burning Heads and Punish Yourself, and a disc including the re-releases of Biotop and Émotion numérique.

The group's third album, Une nuit pour sept jours, was released on October 13, 2008 on the New Track Music label. For one week, he entered the SNEP sales ranking by ranking 140th. The band has a varied musical inspiration, with on the one hand rock and industrial metal influences like Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein, and on the other hand techno and electro influences like The Prodigy, Ez3kiel or Micropoint. The texts, dark and humanistic, are written by Benjamin "Viber" Bury and David "Didou" Cancel. Svinkels is a French hip-hop group composed of three MCs: Gérard Baste, Nikus Pokus, and Mr. Xavier (alias XanaX), active since 1994.

Training and beginnings
Svinkels were first formed in 1994. Concerning the formation of the group, Gérard Baste explains: "Nikus and I were in two 4th grade chests. I was at Charlemagne's, he was at Sophie Germain's. When we met, he was starting to write rap, I was a little tempted. You should know that at that time, all this was very fashionable for teenagers. It was normal to have a tag, rap and take a break. DJ Pone, best French DJ from 2000 to 2003 and world team champion with the Birdy Nam Nam Nam DJ group, joined the group in 2001. The Svinkels are part of the Qhuit collective (composed of TTC, Triptik, AMS Crew, Rhum-G and L'Animalexxx) formed in 2004, with whom they produce the album Gran Bang. At the beginning of 2008, the group was accompanied on stage by the Dirty Centre Orchestra, and no longer by a DJ (DJ Pone), thus bringing a more rocky side to their performances. Musical style

Panda Dub - Rastamachine - 2007 - Electro

The Panda Dub project was born in Lyon in 2007. Dub maker influenced by the French and English dub scenes, Panda Dub has created a very personal style. Reggae roots, English stepper and French electro dub feed his compositions which have all the characteristics of those whose English sound systems are so popular. The sound of the Panda is a clever mix of ethno samples, fresh and punchy electro melodies, bewitching textures and heavy rhythms.

Panda Dub made a name for itself on the web with the publication between 2007 and 2009 of the albums Born 2 Dub and Bamboo Roots. In 2009 and 2010, the EP Subcontraire and the EP Black Bamboo, downloaded more than 20,000 times in the year following its publication, were released on the Original Dub Gathering label. In 2011, Panda Dub will release in self-production its only EP in CD Antilogy version. After appearing on numerous compilations (notably on the ODGProd and Paproota net-labels), he released his latest album Psychotic Symphony on January 1, 2013, still available for free download on ODGProd.

Panda Dub is working on many projects with artists from the Dub and Electro scene in France such as Mahom and Mayd Hubb.

Panda Dub is undoubtedly one of the artists who proves that the French Dub is full of resources and good surprises.

Gounod died at Saint-Cloud in 1893, after a final revision of his twelve operas. His funeral took place ten days later at the Church of the Madeleine, with Camille Saint-Saëns playing the organ and Gabriel Fauré conducting. He was buried at the Cimetière d'Auteuil in Paris.


Gounod was born in Paris, the son of a pianist mother and an artist father. His mother was his first piano teacher. Gounod first showed his musical talents under her tutelage. He then entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied under Fromental Halévy and Pierre Zimmerman (he later married Anne, Zimmerman's daughter). In 1839 he won the Prix de Rome for his cantata Fernand. In so doing he was following his father: François-Louis Gounod (d. 1823) had won the second Prix de Rome in painting in 1783. During his stay in Italy, Gounod studied the music of Palestrina and other sacred works of the sixteenth century; he never ceased to cherish them. Around 1846-47 he gave serious consideration to joining the priesthood, but he changed his mind before actually taking holy orders, and went back to composition. During that period he was attached to the Church of Foreign Missions in Paris.

In 1854 Gounod completed a Messe Solennelle, also known as the St. Cecilia Mass. This work was first performed in its entirety in the church of St. Eustache in Paris on Saint Cecilia's Day, 22 November 1855; Gounod's fame as a noteworthy composer dates from that occasion.


During 1855 Gounod wrote two symphonies. His Symphony No. 1 in D major was the inspiration for the Symphony in C composed later that year by Georges Bizet, who was then Gounod's 17-year-old student. In the CD era a few recordings of these pieces have emerged: by Michel Plasson conducting the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, and by Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.

Fanny Mendelssohn, sister of Felix Mendelssohn, introduced the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach to Gounod, who came to revere Bach. For him The Well-Tempered Clavier was "the law to pianoforte study...the unquestioned textbook of musical composition". It inspired Gounod to devise a melody and superimpose it on the C major Prelude (BWV 846) from The Well-Tempered Clavier Bk. 1. To this melody in 1859 (after the deaths of both Mendelssohn siblings), Gounod fitted the words of the Ave Maria, resulting in a setting that became world-famous.

Gounod wrote his first opera, Sapho, in 1851 at the urging of his friend, the singer Pauline Viardot; it was a commercial failure. He had no great theatrical success until Faust (1859), derived from Goethe. This remains the composition for which he is best known; and although it took a while to achieve popularity, it became one of the most frequently staged operas of all time, with no fewer than 2,000 performances of the work having occurred by 1975 at the Paris Opéra alone. The romantic and melodious Roméo et Juliette (based on the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet), premiered in 1867, is often in the repertoire of the world's opera houses but has never come close to matching Faust's popular following. Mireille, first performed in 1864, has been admired by connoisseurs rather than by the general public. The other Gounod operas are rarely performed.


From 1870 to 1874 Gounod lived in England, at 17 Morden Road, Blackheath. A blue plaque has been put up on the house to show where he lived. He became the first conductor of what is now the Royal Choral Society. Much of his music from this time is vocal, although he also composed the Funeral March of a Marionette in 1872. (This received a new lease of life in 1955 when it was first used as the theme for the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents.) He became entangled with the amateur English singer Georgina Weldon, a relationship (platonic, it seems) which ended in great acrimony and embittered litigation. Gounod had lodged with Weldon and her husband in London's Tavistock House.

He performed publicly many times with Ferdinando de Cristofaro, a mandolin virtuoso living in Paris. Gounod was said to take pleasure in accompanying Cristofaro's mandolin compositions with piano.

Later in his life Gounod returned to his early religious impulses, writing much sacred music. His Pontifical Anthem (Marche Pontificale, 1869) eventually (1949) became the official national anthem of Vatican City. He expressed a desire to compose his Messe à la mémoire de Jeanne d'Arc (1887) while kneeling on the stone on which Joan of Arc knelt at the coronation of Charles VII of France. A devout Catholic, he had on his piano a music-rack in which was carved an image of the face of Jesus.

He was made a Grand Officer of the Légion d'honneur in July 1888. In 1893, shortly after he had put the finishing touches to a requiem written for his grandson, he died of a stroke in Saint-Cloud, France.

Opera singers, such as Nellie Melba, Franco Corelli and Luciano Pavarotti, as well as choirs have recorded it hundreds of times during the twentieth century.

Later in his career, Gounod composed an unrelated setting of Ave Maria for a four-part SATB choir.

The band was a duet composed of Christian Fourgeron (guitar, vocals) and Pierre Schott (guitar, bass, vocals, born 24 April 1958). Loudblast is a Death/Thrash band that pioneered the genres in France, and one of the most important French metal bands of the 1990s.

The band began in 1986 in the northern city of Lille. Its first recording was a split CD with the Nice-based band Agressor. They have released seven albums on the record labels Semetary/fnac, Metal13, and listenable. They began playing thrash metal influenced by the classic American bands such as Slayer. In 1991 they recorded the album "Disincarnate" in Morrisound Recording studios in Tampa, Florida, and the result was a pure death metal album. In the late 1990s they incorporated more melody and groove in their music while maintaining a thrash/death aesthetic.

The band announced that they were splitting in 1999, but after a support concert to Death's Chuck Schuldiner in 2002, the band reformed with Agressor's Alex Colin-Tocquaine and released Planet Pandemonium in 2004. After a few year hiatus, Stéphane and Hervé announced in November 2009 a new line-up including Alex Lenormand (Locust) and Drakhian (Fornication, Black Dementia, Griffar).

On February 2017, Jérôme Point-Canovas replace Drakhian as guitar player, during the "sublime dementia tour", and he is officialised as permanent member, during may.

Cornelius Nyungura (born 24 March 1977) is a singer who performs under the name Corneille. He was born in Germany to Rwandan parents, spent most of his childhood in Rwanda, and eventually emigrated to Quebec, Canada in 1997. He sings in French and English. His work is greatly influenced by American funk and soul music; he is inspired by artists' Prince, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

Corneille was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, although he spent much of his childhood in Rwanda. He discovered his passion for music in 1993, and so joined an R&B group, who won the Découverte 1993 competition. This also introduced him to songwriting and musical composition. However, his life changed after the Rwandan genocide in 1994. His father, Émile Nyungura, was a leader of the political party PSD thought to be opposed to the RPF and therefore a target; Corneille witnessed the assassination of his parents and his three brothers and sisters when he was 17 years old. He fled to Germany, where some of his parents' friends took him in.

Career
In July 1997, Corneille decided to leave Germany in order to pursue studies in communication, and moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada to attend Concordia University. During this time, he founded O.N.E., an R&B band, with Pierre Gage and Gardy Martin, whom he had met shortly after arriving in Quebec. Zoukin, one of the group's songs written by Corneille, rose to first place in Canadian airplay. Then, at the beginning of 2001, Corneille left the group, wishing to pursue a solo career. He began to centre his songs on his past.

During 2002, Corneille worked on various projects. He wrote and composed the songs "Ce soir" for the Cocktail R&B 2 compilation (Ghetto R&B, Sony Music) and "Si seulement on s'aimait" for Hip Hop Folies (Sony Music). Invited by Dave Stewart, he performed at his first showcase at the Réservoir in Paris, and had the chance to sing with Jimmy Cliff. In January 2003, he was invited to perform as an opening act for Cunnie Williams at the Olympia.

Corneille's first album, the Canadian version of Parce qu'on vient de loin, was released on 10 September 2002. The French version, which included numerous bonuses on the second disc, was released on 20 October 2003, and quickly became successful. In April 2003, Corneille sang with Craig David, repeating a verse in French in the song Rise and Fall. He undertook his first tour during May 2003, playing to full houses in Paris, Marseilles, Lyon and Bordeaux. In March 2005, the singer participated in the concert Africa Live, which was organised to fight against (malaria) paludism. This was the first time that he had returned to his home continent since the genocide. Les marchands de rêves, Corneille's second album, was released in November 2005.

Corneille has worked with the Canadian Red Cross to raise awareness of children who are victims of war. He released his first English-language album, The Birth Of Cornelius, in July 2007. Bruno Mantovani (born 8 October 1974) is a French composer. He has been awarded first prizes from the Paris Conservatory which he joined in 1993. His work has been commissioned by the French government as well as other organizations. In September 2010 he was appointed to the post of director of the Paris Conservatory.

Bruno Mantovani studied at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris between 1993 and 2000 and won five first prizes (analysis, aesthetics, orchestration, composition, music history). After participating in Ircam's computer music program, he began an international career, and his works were performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Barbican Center in London, the KKL in Lucerne, the Scala in Milan, Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York, the Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Musikverein in Vienna. Faithful to his favourite performers, he collaborates with prestigious soloists.

He has received several distinctions in international competitions, the Hervé Dugardin, Georges Enesco and Grand Prix de la Sacem awards in 2000, 2005 and 2009, the André Caplet award from the Institute in 2005, the SACD New Talent Award in 2007, the Belmont award from the Forberg-Schneider Foundation the same year, the Victoire de la Musique du "compositeur de l'année" in 2009, the Claudio Abbado Prize of the Berlin Philharmonic and the International Music Press Prize in 2010, the Cecilia Prize in 2012, and numerous awards for his recordings (including several favorites from the Charles Cros Academy, a "Clash of the Year" from the World of Music, and a selection in the top ten records of 2008 in the New York Times). He was made a knight and officer in the Order of Arts and Letters in January 2010 and January 2015, a knight in the Order of Merit in April 2012 and a knight in the Order of the Legion of Honour in July 2016. He was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts on May 17, 2017.

He is in residence at the Académie de France in Rome (Villa Médicis) in 2004-2005, at the Besançon Festival from 2006 to 2008, with the Orchestre national de Lille from 2008 to 2011, then with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse from 2010, and with the Orchestre national de Lyonn in 2014-16. The Musica festival, of which he has been a privileged guest since 2001, dedicated a portrait to him in 2006.

From 2010 onwards, he began a regular collaboration with the Paris National Opera (creation of the ballet Siddharta for the first season, an opera on the life of the Russian poetess Anna Akhmatova in March 2011 and a violin concerto for Renaud Capuçon and Philippe Jordan in March 2012).

But with Mantovani there's never any question of dawdling! After a few minutes, the aquatic journey already boasts the power and independence of a millennial journey. Skip the Use is a French band with electro funk, rock and punk influences founded in 2008 with musicians from Ronchin, near Lille and made up of Mat Bastard (born 18 October 1983) (vocals), Yan Stefani (born 28 November 1984) (guitar), Jay Gimenez (born 7 August 1984) (bass), Lio Raepsaet (born 26 August 1985) (keyboards) and Manamax Catteloin (born 2 January 1986) (drums). The band is signed with Polydor and has distribution arrangement with Universal Music.

The five members used to play in punk band Carving. They released their debut eponymous album Skip the Use produced by CALYSTA and NPE. The latter also organized their French tour and other tours in countries such as Canada, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania for the promotion of their album recorded in YellowSub studios with Yves Jaget and Manu Guiot member of NPE, and released 5 October 2009. They also took part in a string of music festivals allowing them to gain fame.

In early 2011, they launched a well-followed blog and a single "Give Me Your Life" accompanied by a music video and in October of same year the EP Sound from the Shadow on Polydor with 5 tracks made available on digital download although limited edition CD was made of the EP but available only at live concerts of the band.

In January 2012, they were nominated for "best live group or artist revelation of the year" at Victoires de la musique. "Ghost" launched at French TV entertainment show Taratata accompanied by a choir. This was a prerelease for their album Can Be Late released on 6 February 2012. A limited edition also offered an 8-track of live renditions during a concert at Paris' Moulin Rouge La Machine venue on 27 October 2011.

While the future of Bloc Party continues to remain up in the air thanks to a seemingly never-ending series of contradictory press statements, fans looking for a new fix of angular electro-rock could do worse than to check out Lille quintet Skip the Use's second album, Can Be Late. Produced by Tim Goldsworthy (LCD Soundsystem, Massive Attack), many of its 14 tracks hark back to the energetic indie disco of Silent Alarm, from the propulsive call-and-response of "Mirror" to the trancey post-punk of "The Face," while frontman Mat Bastard's animated tones are a dead ringer for Kele Okereke's anguished yelps. Slightly derivative they may be, but the band are far less enthralling when they venture outside their convincing tribute act territory. "Darkness Paradise" (one of three tracks lifted from their 2011 Sound from the Shadow EP) is a muddy slice of Brit-pop which recalls the indie-landfill acts of the Cool Britannia era, "Bastard Song" is an experimental fusion of squelchy electro, dub wobbles, and riotous riffs which suggests their decision to abandon their earlier punk incarnation was a wise one, and the plinky-plonky "Cup of Coffee" is pure ska-pop by numbers. The attempts to ape the bass-led funk rock of mid-'90s Red Hot Chili Peppers suggest they have two options should they ever choose to enter Stars in Their Eyes, particularly the summery "Ghost," whose infectious children's singalong chorus echoes One Hot Minute's "Aeroplane." Can Be Late couldn't really make the band's influences any more obvious, but while there's nothing new here, it's the kind of lively and immediate record that the indie rock scene across the Channel could do with more of.

Singer/songwriter Jacques Brel created and performed a catalog of literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that brought him a large, devoted following in France. His audience eventually extended internationally, making him a major influence on English-speaking writers and performers including Leonard Cohen and David Bowie, while translations of his songs were recorded by a wide range of performers from the Kingston Trio to Frank Sinatra.

Born in Brussels, Belgium, on April 8, 1929, Brel was the son of Romain Brel, who worked in an import-export firm, but later became co-director of a company that manufactured cardboard cartons, and Elisabeth (Lambertine) Brel. He began playing the guitar at the age of 15. After quitting school, he took a job in his father's plant in August 1947. During this period, he became increasingly interested in music, beginning to perform while a member of a church youth group and starting to write his own songs. In 1952, he first performed on local radio, and in February 1953 he was signed by Philips Records, which released his debut single, "La Foire"/"Il Y A," in March. Its modest success led to professional bookings locally and, soon, a move to Paris, where he built up a following in the clubs. In July 1954, he made his first appearance at the prestigious Olympia Theater in Paris, followed by his first French tour, and at the end of the year Philips released his debut album, a nine-song, 10" LP called Jacques Brel et Ses Chansons. More touring followed, and he achieved a commercial breakthrough in 1956 when his song "Quand On N'A Pas Que l'Amour" (later adapted into English as "If We Only Have Love"), released on an EP, became a hit, reaching number three in the French charts. His subsequent LP releases were Jacques Brel 2 (1957), Jacques Brel 3 (1958), and Jacques Brel 4 (1959).

In 1960, Brel earned a U.S. release with American Début on Columbia Records, a compilation of Philips tracks. In France, he switched from Philips to the recently formed Barclay Records in March 1962, his first LP release for the label being the live album A l'Olympia 1962, followed by his first studio album in four years, Jacques Brel Accompagne Pas François Rauber et Son Orchestra. After performing mainly in French-speaking territories, he was becoming a star worldwide and touring internationally much of the year. In February 1963, he made his U.S. performing debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. American poet and singer Rod McKuen began writing English lyrics to Brel's songs, and the Kingston Trio recorded "Seasons in the Sun," McKuen's version of a song Brel had titled "Le Moribond." That year in France, Jacques Brel 6 and another live album, Olympia 64, appeared.

In 1965, Reprise Records licensed tracks from Barclay for a U.S. release called Jacques Brel, and Brel returned to Carnegie Hall on December 4. In 1966, Damita Jo recorded "If You Go Away," McKuen's version of the Brel composition "Ne Me Quitte Pas," and it reached the charts. The wistful song, with its alternating happy and sad lyrics and lush melody, became a pop standard recorded by dozens of singers, including Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, and Neil Diamond. Also in 1966, Judy Collins put an English-language version of Brel's "La Colombe" ("The Dove") on her In My Life album (Joan Baez covered the same song the following year on her album Joan), and Glenn Yarbrough sang "The Women" ("Les Biches") on his LP The Lonely Things. Philips Records, meanwhile, weighed in with an American Brel compilation, The Poetic World of Jacques Brel.

Brel announced his retirement from concert work in 1966, giving a final series of shows in Paris at the Olympia in the fall, but after that he had six months of performances internationally to fulfill. These included appearances in the U.S., where Reprise issued Encore, another compilation drawn from Barclay, and Vanguard Records had Le Formidable Jacques Brel. His last concert came on May 16, 1967. He was not, however, retiring from other kinds of performing: he continued to record, his next LP appropriately being titled Jacques Brel '67 (though it turned out to be his last new studio album for a decade); he starred in his first feature film, the non-musical drama Les Risques du Metièr, before the end of the year (with nine more movies to follow through 1973, some featuring his music); and he also turned to the legitimate stage, translating and taking the leading role in a French production of the American musical Man of la Mancha that opened in Brussels on October 4, 1968, and moved to Paris, where it ran from December until June 1969. (A cast album was released.)

Overseas, meanwhile, his name was given greater prominence by a New York stage production in which he did not appear, an off-Broadway revue of his songs that, keying off of speculation about his decision to stop touring, was called Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. It opened at the Village Gate in Greenwich Village on January 22, 1968. Songwriter Mort Shuman and playwright Eric Blau had translated Brel's lyrics more closely than McKuen, conveying in English the pathos and wit of his story-songs, and the effect was overwhelming -- the revue played nearly 2,000 performances, becoming one of the longest-running off-Broadway shows in history. Columbia Records released a double-LP box set of the complete show as an original cast album. The revue was revived on Broadway, in 1972 and 1981, and off-Broadway in 2006, and it was turned into a film in 1975, with Brel himself making a cameo appearance. The success of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris increased Brel's profile in English-speaking countries. In England, American expatriate Scott Walker's recording of "Jackie" (aka "La Chanson de Jacky") from the show hit the charts the month before the New York opening, reaching the Top 40. (Marc Almond's revival, drawn from his tribute album Jacques, made the British Top 20 in 1991.) "Jackie" was included on Walker's debut solo LP, Scott, which also featured Brel's "Mathilde," "Amsterdam," and "My Death" ("La Mort"), and Walker also put Brel songs on his subsequent albums Scott 2 (1968) and Scott 3 (1969). Other British Brel fans included David Bowie, who released a version of "Amsterdam" as a B-side single in 1973 while also performing "My Death" in concert, and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, which titled an album after Brel's song "Next" ("Au Suivant") in 1973. In the U.S., Judy Collins recorded "Marieke" for her Whales & Nightingales album in 1970; Frank Sinatra put "I'm Not Afraid" (a McKuen lyric for "Fils De") on the B-side of a single in 1971; Dionne Warwick scored a chart entry with "If We Only Have Love" in 1972; and at the end of 1973 Terry Jacks released a revival of "Seasons in the Sun" that hit number one in both the U.S. and the U.K., followed by a chart entry with his version of "If You Go Away."
Brel himself, meanwhile, continued to appear in French films, making his screenwriting and directorial debut with Franz in 1972 and memorably taking his final starring role opposite stone-faced Lino Ventura in Edouard Molinaro's 1973 black comedy L'Emmerdeur (released in the U.S. with the title A Pain in the A-), which was remade in 1981 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as Buddy Buddy. In July 1974, having bought a yacht, Brel set off on what was intended to be a circumnavigation of the globe. But in October, while in the Canary Islands, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He went to Brussels for an operation to remove part of his left lung. After recovering, he returned to his boat and continued on his journey. In November 1975, he reached the Marquesas Islands, where he decided to stay. He returned to France in July 1977 to record a new album, Brel, issued in November. The LP became a massive hit, reportedly selling 650,000 copies on its first day of release and eventually topping two million copies. Suffering a recurrence of cancer, Brel again returned to France in July 1978 for treatment, but he died three months later at the age of 49. In France, Brel's reputation as one of the major singers and songwriters of the 20th century is secure. In the English-speaking world, his influence is limited by the language barrier and by his musical taste in traditional pop and cabaret, rather than the predominant style of the second half of the century, rock. Nevertheless, his lyrics, delving into personal, dark, and adult subjects, are in keeping with the trend toward frankness and seriousness of popular songwriting from Bob Dylan on and even anticipate that trend. As such, Brel is something of a French older brother to the likes of Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and all the confessional singer/songwriters who followed them. At the same time, his work, as translated into often bowdlerized English (especially in the McKuen versions), has extended his influence as a songwriter across genres. Jacques Brel used to sing his songs - which he composed on tour with his musicians - for the first time in public, as soon as he felt they were finished, before recording them in the studio. In the case of Amsterdam, he is not convinced by the song, which he considers to be of no importance. So much so that, intending to sing it for the first time during a series of concerts at the Olympia in Paris, he decided to use it as the "sacrificed" song of his concert, placing it at the very beginning, when it was still possible to make some final adjustments for the concert, and when the professionals knew that the audience was paying much more attention to the artists than to the songs anyway; "so that we would no longer talk about it," he says.

The first is scheduled for 16 October 1964. But, as usual for the Olympia, a performance as a dress rehearsal is given the day before, in a Versailles theatre also directed by Bruno Coquatrix (director of the Olympia). Noting that the song was seducing the audience, Jacques Brel finally decided to move it to third place in his next concert. At the premiere at the Olympia on October 16, the song was a huge success with the 2,000 spectators who stood up and applauded endlessly; to such an extent that the musicians, having started the introduction of the next song after a few moments, were forced to play it over and over again a number of times before the endless applause. In addition to these spectators, there are millions of Europe 1 listeners who broadcast the evening live, with whom the song is also a sensation.

Amsterdam then became one of Brel's greatest hits, a song that was almost unavoidable in the following concerts, characterized by the "crescendo brelien" (dramatic progression in writing and performance). While Jacques Brel is used to never recall or weave a song in concert, according to Jean Corti, this one will be the only exception to this rule, Jacques Brel deciding to replay it at the request of the Muscovite public, during a tour of the Soviet Union in 1965. However, it is worth noting another song written by Jacques Brel, Les Flamandes, in 1960 during a concert given at the University of Louvain.

Despite this, Jacques Brel was never really convinced by this song, and it was never recorded in the studio; with Les timides and Les jardins du casino, recorded at the same time at the Olympia, they were the only three Brel songs to exist only in live version. Nevertheless, if we base ourselves on the book "Jacques Brel auteur: L'intégrale de ses textes commentés par France Brel" written by his daughter France, this song would have been recorded in studio with the musicians of the studio for a Polish television show in January 1966.

A long-standing unpublished version of Amsterdam recorded live at the Olympia in 1966 was released in 2016 on the double album Olympia 1964 - 1966.

The latter came out a few years later and is campaigning for the recognition of homoparentality.

Chris Keller has collaborated on musicals, including La Légende de Broadway in 2008. He also directs clips, including the one of the song Armstrong for Maurane. Chris Keller participated in the casting of the second season of The Voice in 2013 with the title of Julie London Cry Me Me A River but none of the four coaches turned around.

In 2012 he also participated in the musical L'Enfant au clown in which he plays two characters (Hippolyte an orphan as well as Santa Claus) TF1, March 2, 2013.

In June 2015, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the boys band phenomenon in France, he launched the group Génération Boys Band with Frank Delay (2Be3) and Allan Théo. Brigitte Bardot’s most famous musical endeavor, and one of the songs for which her collaborator Serge Gainsbourg is most famous, 1968’s “Bonnie and Clyde” is one of the pinnacles of ‘60s French pop, as important to the Parisian pop scene (where its romanticized view of the real-life ‘30s gangsters Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow was part and parcel of the same worldview that encompassed everything from nouvelle vague films such as Breathless to anarcho-pranksters the Situationist International) as “Hey Jude” was in England or John Wesley Harding was in the states.
“Bonnie and Clyde” has not dated at all in the intervening decades, most likely because few other songs have ever sounded like this: the arrangement is built on a circular violin riff that’s so unvarying that it may well be a tape loop, augmented by an utterly bizarre vocal hook that appears, unchanging, approximately every eighth bar: an odd strangled yelp somewhere between a hiccup and a baby’s burble. Over these, as a well as a full orchestra and an oddly prominent (for the time period) drum kit, Bardot and Gainsbourg trade lines in hushed near-whispers, joining together only for the title refrain. Mysterious French "cloud rap" duo PNL are a self-made sensation who captured the zeitgeist to score a number one album without signing to any label or granting a single interview. French-Arab Muslim brothers Tarik and Nabil Andrieu, aka Ademo and N.O.S., grew up in the forbidding Tarterêts housing project in Corbeil-Essonnes, a southern banlieue of Paris. Intensely secretive, they refused to give interviews, though would sometimes allow journalists to shadow them. They surrounded themselves with a large crew of hangers-on and supposedly made most of the money they used to fund their early recordings by dealing drugs. (The group's name stands for "Peace 'n' Lovés," the latter word a slang term for money.) The harsh reality of poverty, street life, and the immigrant experience informed their music, but there was none of the bluster of gangsta rap; instead, their low-tempo, heavily-AutoTuned, sing-speak rap style had a deep, world-weary melancholy that reverberated with a disillusioned generation. Their heavy use of the French slang verlan (analogous to Cockney rhyming slang) and Arabic words meant that even many speakers of standard French could not fully understand their lyrics, adding a further sheen of mystique.

PNL formed in 2014 and came to fame with a series of epic music videos released on YouTube, each of which was feverishly anticipated as an event by their fan base. The videos, shot as far apart as Iceland, Namibia, and Japan, were directed by a friend known only as Mess, who claimed to have had only six months' audio-visual training. Working solely with one engineer, Nikola Feve, the brothers approached music-making with an obsessive perfectionism, spending up to 30 hours mixing each track. Their insistence on remaining independent meant they could focus solely on the studio, and they rarely played live. Early in their career, there was some controversy -- eventually settled -- over their uncredited use of so-called "type beats," instrumentals created by little-known producers in the style of famous rappers and licensed for small amounts.

Their debut album, Que la Famille ("The Family"), was released in 2015 to a muted response, but their popularity surged after their track "Le Monde ou Rien" ("The World or Nothing") became an unofficial anthem of youth-led protests against government austerity measures, going on to rack up a staggering 60 million YouTube views in just a year-and-a-half. Their second album, Le Monde Chico ("Chico World"), released just months after their first, went in at number two on the official album charts, and the following year their third, Dans la Légende ("In the Legend") did even better, debuting at number one, not only in France but in Belgium and Switzerland as well. Dionysos is a French pop band formed in 1993 in Valence, Drôme; they formed at their lycée. They perform songs in both French and English, and have released six studio albums. They are well known in France for their surrealism and eccentricity.

Their first album, Happening Songs, was self-produced and with entirely English lyrics. With their second album The sun is blue like eggs in Winter (also self-produced) Babet became a member. In 1999, they signed to a major label (the now defunct Trema) and released Haïku which brought the band in to the public eye, mainly thanks to the success of the single "Coccinelle".

The name of the band comes from the ancient Greek god Dionysus, which in French is Dionysos.

La Mécanique du Cœur is the sixth studio album by the French band Dionysos, released on 5 November 2007. The title can be translated as the mechanics of the heart; the album complements the book of the same name written by Mathias Malzieu, the band's frontman. The album has sold over 75,000 copies, making it a Gold Disc, and has been adapted into a film directed by Malzieu.


The album follows on from Monsters in Love, an album telling the stories of various monsters imagined by the band. There are several references from this album to the one that preceeeds it.

A lot of the band's oeuvre has been inspired by the work of Tim Burton, and the artwork from this album has strong influences from Corpse Bride. The music video from the first single ("Tais toi mon cœur") is animated in the same style. Some of the songs are in French, others are in English and some switch between both languages.

This album features many guest appearances from prominent French stars: Eric Cantona narrates the epilogue, Olivia Ruiz (the lead singer's partner) appears on several tracks, Grand Corps Malade co-writes two tracks, Jean Rochefort sings on one song to mention but a few.

The band's violinist Babet (Élisabeth Maistre) only appears on the track "Cunnilingus Mon Amour!" because she was busy working on her solo career whilst the album was being recorded. However, she is scheduled to appear on the March 2008 tour promoting the album.


The album follows a strong concept, based around the book of the same name (written by the band's lead singer Mathias Malzieu). It tells the story of Little Jack, a child born in Edinburgh in 1874 on the coldest day in the world. He is born with a frozen heart which the midwife, Docteur Madeleine, replaces with a cuckoo clock - it works, but means that he must "not touch the hands. Control his temper. And most importantly, never ever fall in love" or else the clock will explode through his skin.

Alas, he falls in love with an Andalucian singer Miss Acacia on the streets of Edinburgh which makes his heart malfunction. Docteur Madeleine fixes him but restates he must never fall in love.

In an attempt to find her again, he enrolls at school where he meets his nemesis Joe, who has also fallen in love with Miss Acacia. Joe threatens Jack so that he won't look for her. For Jack, school for the next four years is torment, being humiliated by Joe and bullied because of his clockwork heart. On his last day of school, Jack is desperate for Miss Acacia and asks Joe where he could find her. They fight, and Jack pierces Joe in the eye with the hands of his clock. Thinking he might be dead, he runs home to Madeleine and tells her what's happened.

Arthur appears saying the police are coming, so Jack is sent on his way to escape, with not much to his name and instructions to find a clocksmith, not a doctor, to look after his heart. He travels first to London where he meets Jack the Ripper who comes close to killing him due to his overcuriosity. Jack flees, leaving London to cross the channel to Paris. In Paris, Jack searches for a watchmaker. The first he meets is disgusted by his disfigurement and sends Jack away; the second man he meets doesn't fix him but sends him off to the 'magician' Georges Méliès. Méliès looks after not only his heart but gives him advice in love, and accompanies him on his voyage to Andalucia.

In Andalucia Jack searches for Acacia, seemingly to no avail, until they are guided by someone to some kind of carnival. Jack sees her for the first time since they first met, and is still in love. He creeps into her caravan after the show and gives her a bunch of glasses, and they agree to meet again. Jack gets a job working on the ghost train, with an evil employer Brigitte Heim - he is not particularly good at his job because people often leave the ride giggling.

After several years, Miss Acacia has become more famous, but Joe returns. He is at first unrecognized, but due to his missing eye is far better at scaring people so takes Little Jack's job at the ghost train. One night he goes to see Miss Acacia perform, where Jack encounters Joe. Joe slowly seems to be winning her away from Jack, and he becomes so jealous he breaks his own heart, jamming a knife into the gears.

Three years pass as Jack sleeps in a coma. Méliès has promised to replace his old wooden heart which he does before returning to Paris, leaving Jack in the care of a nurse he once womanized. Jack wakes up and tries to deal with his new body, which is hard even for himself to recognise due to the changes and developments - this gives him the chance to visit L'Extraordinarium to see Miss Acacia without her knowing his true identity. After some time he reveals who he is, presenting his old heart to her in a box. She realises it is him, and, believing him to have died three years previously and that his reappearance confirms her earlier suspicions of deceit, rejects him.

Jack's new body keeps growing - he becomes a giant (Giant Jack from the previous album Monsters in Love). In the epilogue he travels back to Scotland where he meets Arthur, who reveals the secret of Jack's life: he needed his clockwork heart to survive for the first few months of life, but after that his heart of flesh and blood functioned normally. Madeleine kept this a secret because she wanted to shelter him.

The flip side featured the side long title track. A four piece, multi-segmented suite, the song started out with 'Imaginez le Temps'. Three and a half minutes into the song (which I think translates roughly as "imagine the time"), I'd just about given up on the track, having decided the mix of percussion, indecipherable vocal fragments, and Richard Aubert sawing violin was just an irritating slice of experimental dribble. And then the song suddenly exploded into a dreamy, ballad with a beautiful melody, exquisite vocals from Balzer and some Yes-styled lead guitar from Beya.
ii.) L'araignée-mal (Andre Balzer - Uro - Michel Taillet) - 5:05 rating: **** stars
Seamlessly merging into 'L'araignée-mal', the suite picked up a bit of momentum with Gozzo's drums and Taillet's synthesizers setting up a hypnotic pattern over which Balzer turned in some of his most urgent vocals. I'm usually pretty skeptical about stuff like this, but this was one of the exception - mesmerizing.
iii.) Les Robots Debiles (Andre Balzer - Michel Taillet - Jean Luc Thillot) - 3:35 rating: **** stars
'Les Robots Debiles' saw the energy level ratchet up even further. Opening up with some urgent Taillet synthesizer washes, with the exception of some brief, weird, Focus-styled shouts, the second half of the song almost qualified as a slice of hard rock. Who knew Balzer could belt it out like this ?
iv.) Le Cimetiere de Plastique (Michel Taillet - Jean Luc Thillo - Christian Beya) - 6:00 rating: **** stars
So how could you not love a song with a title like 'Le Cimetiere de Plastique' ('Cemetery of Plastic') ? In spite of the title, to my ears it was one of Atoll's prettiest numbers with Beya stepping up to the plate with a gorgeous solo and Balzer again showing off his remarkable voice (it was enough for me to look for a copy of his solo album). My only complaint - what was with the stop-on-a-dime ending ?

Entre gris clair et gris foncé is a 1987 double album recorded by French artist Jean-Jacques Goldman. It was his fifth studio album and was released in November 1987. It provided four successful singles : "Elle a fait un bébé toute seule" (#4), "Là-bas" (#2), "C'est ta chance" (#16) and "Puisque tu pars" (#3). The album was also very successful. It sold more than 2 millions copies, making it the tenth best-selling album of all times in France.

The first nine songs are new compositions. The other eleven songs were written years before. Goldman always wrote one or two songs for each album that either didn't fit the mood of the record or that were too personal. When he started becoming popular, he thought it would be a good opportunity to release some previously unheard songs.

While preparing this album, the new songs were tracked in the studio. The old songs were either recorded live or were recorded using only acoustic instruments.

In 1987, Goldman had finished composing the song but had not yet found a female voice to record the duet with him. Philippe Delettrez, Goldman's saxophonist, met Sirima who sang in a Parisian metro, and suggested that Goldman meet her. After several takes in studio, Goldman finally decided to record the duet with her.

Composed by Jean-Jacques Goldman, the song deals with "the need of escape and the dilemma between a vital renewal and the loss of one's roots".
