Les Rita Mitsouko (The Rita Mitsoukos) was a French pop rock group formed by the guitarist Fred Chichin and the singer Catherine Ringer. The duo first performed as Rita Mitsouko at Gibus Club in Paris in 1980. They went on to become one of the most acclaimed musical acts in France. "Marcia Baila", their debut single produced by Conny Plank, went to number 2 in the French singles chart in 1984. They then started a collaboration with producer Tony Visconti on two albums: the No Comprendo and Marc & Robert. "Singing in the Shower", sung as a duet with Sparks, was a commercial success in France and was then heavily played on US dance radio stations in 1988. Iggy Pop also collaborated with them on 1993’s Système D, duetting with Ringer on "My Love Is Bad".

Rita Mitsouko's self-titled debut album proved to be significant for the French rock scene as it charted new territories and pointed at a new direction. By doing so, the French duo reveal a world of possibilities outside the prevailing American and British models. Catherine Ringer and Fred Chichin had been working since the inception of the group on some of material presented here, which explains why this first record, released in 1984, sounds so accomplished. They play all the instruments and resort to overdubs to create a rich musical landscape largely dominated by drum machines and keyboards. This seemingly cold and automated background provides a sharp contrast to Ringer's expressive and powerful voice. She can suggest a wide range of emotions ranging from contained anger to sarcasm to tenderness. She also keeps changing her delivery and gives the impression that she sings with a foreign accent. If songs like the pop-tinged "Restez Avec Moi," the disco hit "Marcia Baïla," or the raucous "Jalousie" stand out, there is no real down moment throughout this unique and exotic collection of songs proving that Ringer and Chichin have a knack for efficient riffs and memorable melodies. An engaging kickoff to a career that would prove to be longstanding and successful.

"Marcia Baïla" is a 1984 song recorded by the French duo Rita Mitsouko. It was the third single from their first album, Rita Mitsouko, and was released in April of that year. Dedicated to a dancer with the band who died in 1981, this song was a big hit both in France and abroad and can be considered as being one of the band's signature songs.

The song was composed by both members of the group, Catherine Ringer and Fred Chichin. It is a tribute to Argentine dancer and choreographer Marcia Moretto, who participated in the band's tours before her death from breast cancer in 1981 at the age of 32. Louis Victor Jules Vierne (8 October 1870 – 2 June 1937) was a French organist and composer.

Louis Vierne was born in Poitiers, the capital of the Vienne department, nearly blind due to congenital cataracts, but at an early age was discovered to have an unusual gift for music. When he was only two years of age, he heard the piano for the first time: a pianist played him a Schubert lullaby, and after he had finished young Louis promptly began to pick out the notes of the lullaby on the piano.

After completing school in the provinces, he entered the Paris Conservatoire. From 1892, he served as an assistant to the organist Charles-Marie Widor at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. He subsequently became principal organist at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, a post he held from 1900 until his death in 1937.

Vierne had a life that was physically and emotionally very difficult, with severe spiritual trials that are reflected in much of his music. His congenital cataracts did not make him completely blind, but he was what would be called today "legally blind." Early in his career, he composed on outsized manuscript paper, using "a large pencil" as his colleague Marcel Dupré recounted. Later in life, as his already limited sight continued to diminish, he resorted to Braille to do most of his work.

He was deeply affected by a separation and subsequent divorce from his wife, and he lost both his brother René and his son Jacques to the battlefields of World War I. Though he held one of the most prestigious organ posts in France, the Notre-Dame organ was in a state of disrepair throughout much of his tenure at the instrument. He eventually undertook a concert tour of North America to raise money for its restoration. The tour, which included major recitals on the famous Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia and its smaller sister instrument, the Wanamaker Auditorium Organ in New York City, was very successful, although the trip physically drained him.

A street accident in Paris caused him to badly fracture his leg, and it was briefly thought that his leg would need to be amputated. The leg was saved, but his recovery, and the task of completely re-learning his pedal technique, took a full year during one of the busiest times of his life. Despite his difficulties, however, his students uniformly described him as a kind, patient and encouraging teacher. Among his pupils were Augustin Barié, Edward Shippen Barnes, Lili Boulanger, Nadia Boulanger, Marcel Dupré, André Fleury, Isadore Freed, Henri Gagnebin, Gaston Litaize, Édouard Mignan, Émile Poillot, Adrien Rougier, Alexander Schreiner, and Georges-Émile Tanguay.

The government of France made Vierne a Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1931.

Vierne suffered either a stroke or a heart attack (eyewitness reports differ) while giving his 1750th organ recital at Notre-Dame de Paris on the evening of 2 June 1937. He had completed the main concert, which members of the audience said showed him at his full powers ("as well as he has ever played"). Directly after he had finished playing his "Stele pour un enfant défunt" from his 'Triptyque' Op 58, the closing section was to be two improvisations on submitted themes. He read the first theme in Braille, then selected the stops he would use for the improvisation. He suddenly pitched forward, and fell off the bench as his foot hit the low "E" pedal of the organ. He lost consciousness as the single note echoed throughout the church. He had thus fulfilled his oft-stated lifelong dream — to die at the console of the great organ of Notre-Dame. Maurice Duruflé, another major French organist and composer, was at his side at the time of his death.

Style:
Vierne had an elegant, clean style of writing that respected form above all else. His harmonic language was romantically rich, but not as sentimental or theatrical as that of his early mentor César Franck. Like all of the great fin de siècle French organists, Vierne's music was very idiomatic for his chosen instrument and has inspired most of the great Parisian organist-composers who followed him.

His output for organ includes six organ symphonies, 24 Fantasy Pieces (which includes his famous Carillon de Westminster), and Vingt-quatre pièces en style libre, among other works. There are also several chamber works (sonatas for violin and cello, a piano quintet and a string quartet for example), vocal and choral music, and a Symphony in A minor for orchestra.

In 2003 German progressive rock band Inquire [de] recorded an 18-minute version of Vierne's Organ Symphony No. 3 in F♯ minor, for their album Melancholia, remarking in the liner notes that "this symphony marks the beginning of a new movement, what we call 'rock and roll'."

Messe solennelle (Solemn Mass) in C-sharp minor, Op. 16, is a mass by the French composer Louis Vierne. He composed it in 1899, scored for choir and two organs. It was published in 1900, before it was first performed at Saint-Sulpice in Paris in December 1901. Although scored for two pipe organs, it was later adapted for a single organ, as most churches could not provide two such instruments.

In 1899, Vierne set the Latin text of the mass ordinary without the Credo, which makes it a formally a short mass or missa brevis. He imagined a mass for orchestra, but Charles-Marie Widor, his teacher and organist at Saint-Sulpice in Paris advised him to employ organs, for practical reasons. The mass was first performed at Saint-Sulpice in 1901, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, 8 December. The church has a great organ (grand orgue) in its back built by François-Henri Clicquot which Aristide Cavaillé-Coll had reconstructed and improved in 1862. The choir organ, in the choir, was built by Cavaillé-Coll in 1858. Vierne planned the effect of sound from the far ends of the church. In the premiere, Widor played the main organ, while the composer, who was by then organist at Notre-Dame de Paris, played the choir organ.

The mass was first published in 1900 by Pérégally & Fils in Paris, dedicated to Théodore Dubois. An arrangement for choir and one organ was made by Zsigmond Szathmáry, as the use of two organs is often not practical. Another arrangement for one organ by Markus Frank Hollingshau was published by Dr. J. Butz.

The mass is structured in five movements, omitting a Credo: The choir is mostly four-part, SATB, but at times divided further. In the following table of the movements, the markings, keys and signatures are taken from the choral score, using the symbols for common time (4/4) and alla breve.
Vierne builds on models by his teacher Widor and of César Franck, but adds more development of themes and "imaginative expression". He uses repeated rhythmic figures in the accompaniment. The Kyrie opens with "awesome solemnity", while the "mysterious antiphonal harmonies of the Benedictus" were new sounds in French church music, and the Agnus Dei ends, after antiphonal exchange between choir and great organ, serenely in C-sharp major when praying "dona nobis pacem" (Grant us peace).

Fatal Bazooka is a French spoof rap group consisting of Michaël Youn, Vincent Desagnat and Benjamin Morgaine. The act originated in a 2002 TV show which its members hosted at the time. Fatal Bazooka is also the name of the fictitious singer of the group, played by Youn himself.


"Fous ta cagoule" (French for "Put your balaclava on") is a song by the comedy rap group Fatal Bazooka with Michaël Youn, the first single from its album T'As Vu ? released in 2007. This song achieved a huge success in France and Belgium.

The group transposes the urban style into the setting of the snow-covered mountains of Savoy, and caricatures certain French rappers there. The music video was produced by Nicolas Benamou.

The single peaked at #1 in France in January 2007. As of August 2014, the song was the 31st best-selling single of the 21st century in France, with 488,500 units sold.

References
A sequence of the song shows a man sitting on the toilet, suffering from gastro-enteritis because of the cold. It is a parody of the French slammer Grand Corps Malade. It starts with "I would like to throw out a slam on this disease…" (reference to its Saint-Denis song) and finishes by "the next time, I will put on my hoodie." (reference to his song Les Voyages en train which finishes by "next time, you'll take the bus.") This character reappears in the song Crêpes au froment and it is named there "Large Sick Bottom".
Another sequence shows rappers from Marseille. One starts to quickly sing nonsense with a very strong Marseille accent. He is called "Fonky Profanation", and is a parody of Fonky Family, in particular of the song Bad Boys de Marseille (the passage of the Rat Luciano and Don Choa). Its logorrhée is so incomprehensible that a friend says to him "But Ho, don't you understand; no-one understands what you're saying?" to specify "… it to him is not that, but there is a precise message, you see…" what is supposed to parody the "reasons" for many rappers who say to pass a "message" through their songs sometimes badly received. Profanation Fonky will remake a small appearance in Mauvaise Foi Nocturne and Crêpes au froment.
The refrain is inspired by the introduction of the song Hardcore by Ideal J, where one hears "Insane your hood already!".[3]
The piece takes again a sample of Woman to Woman of Joe Cocker (already used by Dr. Dre for Tupac's California Love).
A sequence at the beginning of the clip shows a thermometer which goes down, parodying the Température clip of Sean Paul (where one sees also a thermometer that rises).
"Ouais Gros" of the beginning of the song are a reference to group 113, while the "dedications" of the end are current in the pieces of rep.
The names of the list of dedications are themselves parodies of artists and hip-hop groups ("Pandi-Panda" for Booba, "Pitbull de Flipper" for Pit Baccardi…) One finds a list even more complete of parodies of artists in the song Crêpes au froment.

Sarde also established close associations with directors Bertrand Tavernier, Pierre Granier-Deferre, Georges Lautner, André Téchiné, and Jacques Doillon. Sarde also collaborated with Roman Polanski on The Tenant and Tess, which garnered an Academy Award nomination, Bertrand Blier's on Beau-Père, Alain Corneau on Fort Saganne, and Marshall Brickman on Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, and Sister Mary Explains It All. In 1988, Sarde was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

Film director Georges Lautner once observed that he was constantly amazed by the composer's ability to find a unique approach to each film that he scored. According to Yuri German, writing in the All Music Guide, Sarde's soundtracks are "masterfully and unconventionally arranged" and are often performed by such world-class musicians as Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Stéphane Grappelli, and Maurice Vander."

In April 1990, Sarde married Nave Florence, but they divorced the following year. In 1994, he married Clotilde Burre. They have two daughters, Ponette (born 1998) and Liza (born 1999). Both are enrolled in the seventeenth arrondissement of Paris. Sarde is the brother of producer Alain Sarde.

The Things of Life (French: Les Choses de la vie) is a 1970 French film directed by Claude Sautet. Based on the novel Les Choses de la vie by Paul Guimard, the film circles around a car accident experienced by the main character, and the events before and after it. It was nominated for the top award (the Palme d'Or) at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival. In France the film had 2,959,682 admissions, making it the eighth highest earning film of the year.


The structure of the film involves frequent jumps in time - between the time of, and after, the car crash, and before the crash. The opening sequence jumps between the period immediately after the crash, and the crash itself.

In the French countryside on a summer morning, a lorry full of pigs stalls at a crossroads. An Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint swerves to avoid it and crashes into an orchard, hurling the driver (Michel Piccoli) onto the grass. As he drifts in and out of consciousness, he revisits the essential things which make up his life.

A Paris architect in his forties driving to a meeting at Rennes, he had quarrelled with his lover Hélène Romy Schneider the previous night. They were due to leave together for a job he was offered in Tunis but he hadn't signed the documents. But he had agreed to take his teenage son Bertrand, who lived with his estranged wife Catherine, for a holiday in the family's holiday home on the Île de Ré. Stopping at a café, he wrote to Hélène calling everything off, but did not post the letter. Driving past a wedding, he decides that the letter was quite wrong and he should marry Hélène.

Rushed to hospital in Le Mans, he does not recover. As his widow, Catherine is given his effects, including the unsent letter to Hélène. Catherine is reading it when she sees Hélène arriving. She tears it to pieces, and Hélène is told by a nurse that she is too late.

Les Freluquets - La débauche - 1990

Requiem pour un twister:
Les Freluquets were a french band from late 80s early 90s. They released a few singles (the first in 1987) and two lps: la débauche in 1990 & discorama in 1992. There is not so much informations about them except an excellent interview by Cloudberry Records. I've found La débauche in a record shop in Paris a couple of weeks ago and really loved it. It's a nice bunch of indie pop songs with that great guitare sound (jangly), it's in french and the singer is pretty good. Two songs are particulary fine "la débauche" & "les portes". The late one is my favorite, it's an uptempo number with a strong bassline (very town called malice-ish no?) and those great guitars arpegios, really a strong and beautiful tune. Overall it's a very good lp, not perfect but with it's own charm. I'm very happy to see that bands from my own country did that kind of stuff!

This broad theme plus the very simple music make this song one of the classics among Renaud's "tender" songs.

Background:
A mistral gagnant was a kind of famous candy involving lottery. Some of them were "winning" (gagnant) and one could get another one for free. At his adult age, these candies were not on sale anymore.

Renaud says that he never intended to include the song on his album eventually called Mistral gagnant. He reasoned that the lyrics were just too personal and would not interest the general public. Calling his wife Dominique from the studio while recording his prospective album, he sang her parts of the song on the telephone. After his wife heard it, she loved the song and threatened him: "Si tu ne l'enregistres pas, je te quitte..." (meaning if you don't record this song, I will leave you).

I tried to make it rhyme without loosing the message of the lyrics, the main message being that even if he only spends 5 minutes with his girlfriend he feels time go by, as they stand still. The references to the sweets throughout the song (the only non-translated words) have all more or less disappeared from the market place in France, hence it reinforces the idea that time goes by physically however memories stay forever. It is a beautiful love song that nearly didn't get released as Renaud's style wasn't romance, however his girlfriend at the time, threatened him that she would leave him if he didn't publish such a beautiful song. In my opinion it is one of the most appealing romantic songs in Modern French Music history and deserves to be heard by couples around the world.

On his second album, Jacques Dutronc took a giant leap toward immortality, delivering one of the greatest albums of French '60s rock at its most creative. Whereas his contemporary Ray Davies needed five to six albums to reach his artistic summit, the often compared Dutronc already succeeded at the second attempt. Hence, the first album's garage rock overtones were exchanged in a fortnight for a record on par with the Kinks' Something Else. On top of the sheer variety in musical styles, Dutronc delivers his finest hour: the classic chanson "Il Est Cinq Heures, Paris S'Éveille," which could be viewed as a mirror image to Davies' "Waterloo Sunset."
This clearly brings up the subject of Dutronc's silent partner, the songwriter Jacques Lanzmann. The genius of his lyrics proved just as crucial to the singer's image during the first stage of his career. The clever wordplay of songs like "Mini Mini Mini" -- commenting on the day's fashion, Dutronc insists he prefers "maxiskirt" to miniskirt, "maxister" to minister, and so on -- helped to turn the debut album into a million-seller within a year of its release.
However, the enchanting "Il Est Cinq Heures, Paris S'Éveille" was an altogether different kind of story. Written by Lanzmann and his other half, Anne Ségalen, it's a poetic and fairly accurate account of a nightclubber's morning after: upon describing how the city slowly awakens, the song's protagonist decides he just isn't tired enough to go home yet. Highly recognizable for its flute solo (an improvisation by Roger Bourdin), it evokes images of Paris, for which the casual listener doesn't have to know a lot of French. Released as an EP in its own right, it proved a hit all over Europe and gets a lot of airplay to this day.

Considering Dutronc's music and arrangements, there's a dazzling variety this time around. In addition, his singing has improved noticeably, as he switches on more than one occasion from mere reciting to actually carrying a melody. This becomes evident on a song like the Moody Blues-referencing "Le Métaphore" as well as the frivolous "Le Courrier du Coeur," a song set up as a newspaper advice column (kind of like "Dear Abby, I'm in love with a woman with a mustache"). The song originated from an idea put forward by Jacques Wolfsohn, an artistic director at Disques Vogue, during a meal at his home with songwriting partners Jacques Dutronc and Jacques Lanzmann. He suggested a song on the subject of Paris in the morning. The other two Jacques began writing the song at around 11 pm that evening, and completed it at daybreak. It takes inspiration from "Tableau de Paris à cinq heures du matin", an 1802 song by Marc-Antoine Madeleine Désaugiers.

The modernized lyrics replace Désaugiers' sunrise tableau of bakeries, fruitstands and street cleaners with a less soothing scene of trucks, cars and strippers. Familiar Parisian landmarks such as the Place Dauphine are reexamined for the 1960s; the grand railway station Gare Montparnasse is described as "no more than a carcass" ("...n'est plus qu'une carcasse...") because, at the time the song was written, it was in the process of demolition to make way for the Tour Montparnasse skyscraper.

The flute solo in the recording was added at the end of the session. Dutronc and Lanzmann were unhappy with the arrangement and felt that it lacked something. Dutronc had the idea of adding a manouche-style guitar part, but a flautist working elsewhere in the same building, Roger Bourdin, was asked to listen to the recording and agreed to improvise the short but evocative solos that appear after each sung line on the finished track.

The lyrics to the song are co-credited to Lanzmann's wife at the time, Anne Ségalen.


On 23 March 1968, "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille" was Dutronc's third single to reach number one in the French charts, where it stayed for one week. It also reached number two in Belgium and number four in The Netherlands.

Although the song was not intended to have any political significance, its refrain of "Paris s'éveille" ("Paris awakens") found an obvious resonance in the context of the events of May 1968, a few weeks after its release (the first campus occupation, at Paris X University Nanterre, began the day before the song reached number one). It has, therefore, been described as a "hymn" to those events. A re-written version was mimeographed and sung at the barricades. The song was withdrawn from the playlists of most radio stations and was quickly adapted by the protest singer Jacques Le Glou, with new verses depicting a city of overturned Peugeots and dead policemen.

In 1991, "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille" was voted the best French-language single of all time in a poll of music critics organised by Le Nouvel Observateur for a TV special broadcast on Antenne 2, beating Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" into second place. Rock critic Thierry Coljon describes Dutronc's song as "one of the most beautiful there is".

Since retiring from playing tennis, Noah developed a career as a popular singer, performing throughout Europe. In 1993, he released the album Urban Tribu with the single "Get on Back", followed by the album Zam Zam in 1998.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (French: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg) is a 1964 musical romantic drama film directed and written by Jacques Demy and starring Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo. The music was composed by Michel Legrand. The film dialogue is all sung as recitative, including casual conversation (similar in style to an opera).

Umbrellas is the middle film in an informal "romantic trilogy" of Demy films that share some of the same actors, characters and overall look; it comes after Lola (1961) and before The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967).[3] The film was very successful in France, and was also shown internationally, introducing Deneuve to a larger audience. It was nominated for several Academy Awards, including for Best Foreign Film, Best Song, Best Soundtrack, and Best Original Screenplay. It won three awards at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, including its top prize, the Palme D'or. The music:
The continuous music score and the brightly coloured photography had much to do with the popularity of this film. Formally the work is operatic, with the plot advanced entirely through dialogue sung with accompanying music. The colour photography is bright and vivid. The whole is united by an orchestral score of simple rhythms and tunes that are integrated with the story covering five years.

The film score established composer Michel Legrand's reputation in Hollywood. He later scored other films, winning three Oscars. In North America, two of the film's songs became hits and were recorded by many artists: "I Will Wait for You" (the main theme) and "Watch What Happens" (originally "Recit de Cassard", "Cassard's Story"). Both were given new English lyrics by lyricist Norman Gimbel.
