I'm not better than you. Yes, I have a friend, only one, (Personne ne m'aime, c'est vrai. Pas comme vous le faites .... Monsieur Lejeune :romance-kisscheek: ) but a lot of foes.

And thanks, Moonbeam and Listyguy, for your excellent work.

Re: Songs of the 1980s Poll: Results!

Live In Phoenix and I appear to be especially well-aligned for this poll.

The surprise for me was how closely I matched Moonbeam. I can assure you that the Henry-Moonbeam alignment will not be nearly as impressive in any 1960's or 1970's poll :-)

I know Pitchfork bashing is becoming trendy but I really disagree with this and consider we have been much less adventurous than they are.

56 of our top 150 was included in the Pitchfork 500 lists (I don't know how many 80s songs were in there but since the yearly repartition was relatively even, I'd say about 170). It also needs to be said that they had a limitation of 1 song per album and 4 songs per artists, so no possibility to have 9 Prince songs or 3 tracks from Thriller.

Though some of the songs in common are from critical darlings (3 Smiths Songs, 2 Talking Heads, 3 Prince...) a lot of them are part of what I guess people consider the "mainstream turn" of the poll : Boys of Summer, Don't You Forget About Me, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Like a Prayer, Tainted Love, 2 U2 tracks... (and they have some pop hits we don't, from Hall and Oates or Frankie Goes to Hollywood for example)

What do we have that they don't ? Mostly rock.
Let's not count Metallica, Iron Maiden or Kraftwerk for which they picked other songs from the same albums as we did, or any song from artists already included in their 80s list.
Here is what's left (with in italic artists that are mentioned in the Pitchfork 500 but not with a 80s song)

Au Pairs - Headache for Michelle
Blondie - Call Me
Bowie, David - Ashes to Ashes

Bregovic, Goran - Ederlezi
Chapman, Chapman - Fast Car
Church, The - Under the Milky Way
Cohen, Leonard - Everybody Knows
Collins, Phil - In the Air Tonight
Cooder, Ry - Paris, Texas
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Faith No More - Epic
Gabriel, Peter - In Your Eyes
Gaye, Marvin - Sexual Healing
Gun Club, The - She's Like Herion to Me
Isaak, Chris - Wicked Game
Marley, Bob - Redemption Song
Michael, George - Careless Whisper
Nicely, Nick - Hilly Fields
Pärt, Arvo - Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten
Petty, Tom - Free Fallin'
Piazzolla, Astor - Oblivion
Police, The - Every Breath You Take
Prefab Sprout - Goodbye Lucille #1
Psychedelic Furs, The - Pretty in Pink
Ramones - The KKK Took My Baby Away
Rolling Stones, The - Start Me Up
Soft Verdict - Struggle for Pleasure
Stranglers, The - Golden Brown
Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren
Van Halen - Jump
XTC - Dear God
Young, Neil - Rockin' in the Free World

I guess we can assume that Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen are not completely considered crap by Pitchfork (just look at their 70s albums list or their 60s songs lists)
So in the end we are left with :

- a few really adventurous picks "on unexplored nooks of the rock universe" with 1 classical music piece, a couple world music songs, a soundtrack piece and a couple real oddities (Struggle for Pleasure and Hilly Fields)
- some mainstream hits (Phil Collins, Tear for Fears, Police, Crowded House)
- And some band that I would assume would have been considered as the equivalent of "Pitchforky" back then : Psychedelic Furs, Au Pairs, the Gun Club, Prefab Sprout...

On the other hand we have :
one single electronic music song (so no house or detroit techno)
5 hip hop songs, covering only 3 bands
very little metal, punk, hard rock and post punk (except Joy Division) and only ranked at the very bottom of our list
no hardcore punk, twee, noise, ambient or industrial music...

So if you mean "we don't have as many Pixies and Sonic Youth songs as we used to and don't have any proto-shoegaze stuff like Jesus and Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine", that's true but that's both a narrow vision of the changes on the poll and a very narrow view of Pitchfork !
I personaly consider the 80s part of the Pitchfork 500 the most adventurous and interesting 80s song list I have seen, this forum included (which doesn't mean our list isn't great too, just not as great in my opinion).
I think some of that though is because our list is the average of everybody's list, whereas in Pitchfork individual people get to push for specific songs to be included.

Pitchfork has more pop and rap representation certainly, but if you want to see what kind of list we'd come up with if we used the same approach to listmaking they did, look no further than the BMAA draw. If you look at individual lists in this site you get just as much variety as the staff's individual lists at Pitchfork, only more genre-inclusive and less Anglocentric, and certainly the average mood of a song on our lists would be much happier.

And why do you think there are all these oddball inclusions on our lists? Because games like BMAA and Unacclaimed Song proliferated all our individual knowledge of more obscure tracks. Nick Nicely, Arvo Part, Astor Piazolla, these are all here because one person loved them enough to nominate them in a forum game and then everybody else got to hear them.

We should make a collaborative list like this. Like, we limit ourselves to one song per artist, and we have some kind of way for individuals to champion specific songs. We'd come up with a way more diverse list than this one or anything Pitchfork has ever done. And certainly a much smaller sadness ratio.

Don't know how the '70s will turn out, but it looks like we were the BFFs of this poll! :banana-guitar: :banana-guitar:

Awesome display of statistics, Moonbeam! I'm really honored to be listed in the friends section of 4 voters (including you). But I'm even happier to not be listed as anyone's foe, since there isn't a single member of this great forum who hasn't introduced me to at least a few favorites that I never would've discovered otherwise. I can't wait to see (and hear) the surprises the 70's poll will bring!

Thanks you to all of us. Just for these two good discoveries I made, this game deserve to exist :D

Au Pairs - Headache for Michelle and Nick Nicely - Hilly Fields are both very great songs.
