Now tUnE-yArDs' has released three very distinct records that are all great in the same manner. Nikki Nack is mind-blowing on first listen.

I definitely like "Nikki Nack", but I still think I prefer "Whokill" to it.

And "Why Do We Dine on the Tots?" or whatever it's called is just awful.

Has anyone else heard Richard Buckner - Bloomed?

I will give it an 89. Just beautiful.

Edit: NVM, this is actually a 1994 album and I saw a review of it that did not mention it was a remaster.

Maybe I'll nominate it next BMAA...

I'm listening to the new Swans album on NPR. And it's really, really good so far.

I listened to a stream of The Black Keys' Turn Blue on iTunes Radio and my first impression is that it may be their best work yet. The opener, "Weight of Love," was probably my favorite track.

Updated list, new stuff in bold.

Swans - To Be Kind 9.1
Todd Terje - It's Album Time: 9.1
Future - Honest: 9.0 (Didn't like Kanye feature though.)
Wild Beasts - Present Tense: 8.6
Behemoth - The Satanist: 8.5
Neneh Cherry - Blank Project: 8.5
St. Vincent - St. Vincent: 8.0
Coldplay - Ghost Stories: 7.7
Beck - Morning Phase: 7.5
Fear of Men - Loom: 7.3
Damien Jurado - Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son: 7.3
The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream: 7.3
Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else: 7.2
The Black Keys - Turn Blue: 7.0
Sun Kil Moon - Benji: 6.0
Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes: 4.5

I did change Beck's score from 8.4 to 7.5, cos it just bothered me when I reminisced about the album and now I re-listened to it and just think it's not that good. But if it's too much work to Otis to change the score, 8.4 can stay. I am comfortable with all my other scores, I won't change them ever. Just a one time thing.

Wow 80s and 90s for Swans. Are we reviewing their new album or guessing the members age?LOL!!! Thats just my way of being in awe over them being in their prime well into their 50s.

I'm enjoying Nikki Nack but I'm worried its borderline twee-ness is going to wear on me by the end of the year.

Lykke Li's album has some of the best singles of the year, but it's a little uneven overall.

@luvulongTIM

Imagine how I feel about Tom Waits' recent output. :)

Yeah but songwriters can get away with making comebacks but for some reason bands tend to run out of steam between 35 to 45 (thanks to the Flaming Lips who started the trend). Swans just keep breaking the age barrier and their acclaim is at an ALL TIME high which is even more rare.

I didn't like it at first. I like it more on repeat listens.

I'm a little excited for the newly announced La Roux album. I like the first single, the album art and the idea of a 9 track album. Hopefully it's a sign of self-editing, which the first album lacked.

Especially Washer, I've been listening to it on repeat on the past few weeks.

"The Money Store" is really good. Not 10/10 good, but I placed it in my top 20 albums of 2012. If you listened to "Yeezus" and liked it, I'd check it out, although I personally find the "Yeezus" comparisons to be a bit overblown.

I found Yeezus to be rather solid, though its case was really helped by "New Slaves" and "Black Skinhead" (which were both in my top 3 songs from last year). Hmmm, considering I really did enjoy the Ex-Military mixtape they did right before, I'll definitely look into it, thanks for the response Nick :music-listening:

Yeah I was pretty surprised with that one. I don't always agree with Fantano, but this is definitely a worthy album for him to rate as a 10.

Another a fan of Fantano here. Not that I often agree with his scores but he has a concise and articulate style that always makes his reviews well worth watching.

I didn't like it at first. I like it more on repeat listens.
A deliciously morbid metaphor for the treatment of younger generations by their elders. Otherwise it's the singular filler track on there so it's not worth dismissing the rest of the album over.

Wanted to recommend the following to any experimental electronica aficionados. Ben Frost's new album, 'A U R O R A' has been getting plenty of listens from me over the last few days. You can find a live stream of the entire album here, on Pitchfork Advance.

As for this week's rock music, I'm looking forward to hearing the new Fucked Up and Parquet Courts releases, as I loved both their previous albums.

School Of Language - Old Fears 8 A surprise. I never hear this band before and I've been immediatly in the mood with their music.
The Black Keys - Turn Blue 7,5 They are always good but, for me, it's their weakiest album since their begining.
The Flaming Lips - 7 Skies H3 6 Far far better than The Terror but once again, some songs are too noisy for me. (it's the condensed version, split in 10 songs of their 2011's 24 hour song)
The War On Drugs - Lost in the Dream 4,5 Too Springsteenesque for me ;-)

Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots 9,5
Mando Diao - Aelita 8,5
Ed Harcourt - Time Of Dust 8,5
Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings - Give the People What They Want 8,5

I haven't spent much time on new music this year, but a few of my perennial favorites have forced my hand recently:

Swans - To Be Kind - this could very well end up as their third consecutive album to top my year end list. It is ridiculous that a work of this scope could come out only 18 months after The Seer. They're becoming a legendary band.

Fucked Up - Glass Boys - Only listened to it once and need to revisit, but this just doesn't have it. As their follow-up to my 2011 album of the year David Comes to Life, I was hoping for something much better. This has the same general sound as that album but without the hooks or the grandiose concept.

Roots - And Then You Shoot Your Cousin - probably not as special as How I Got Over or Undun, but continues a great late career under-the-radar run for the group. But seriously, how criminally underrated was Undun due to its late-year release date in 2011?

I just heard the new Parquet Courts album. I'm liking it, but it wears its influences a bit too much on its sleeve and doesn't really seem to do anything new. It's still a pretty good album though, a nice meeting place between Pavement and Wire. Not a contender for my top album of the year, but I could see this thing in my top 25 or so.

I'm listening to Jack White's Lazaretto.

First impression, better than his other solo work, not as good as his White Stripes output.
