Songs and Albums of 1970 Poll!!!

Post by JimmyJazz »

[imgsize 200x150]http://1970mgr.org/1970year.gif[/imgsize]

Welcome, gentlemen (just gentlemen, because who are we kidding!), as we begin our year-long exploration of one of the most important decades in pop music history: the 1970s! Starting with this month (and year!), we will traverse through the decade that saw the end of the psychedelic and hippie music scene, the breakup of the Beatles, the tragic deaths of so many musical legends, the explosion of hard rock/metal and progressive, the era of glam rock, the emergence of great African music outside of the USA (i.e. reggae and Afro-Beat), the birth of punk and in effect alternative music as we still know it to this day, and even the sprouting of two of the biggest musical styles of modern music, hip-hop and dance. I am very excited to be administering this poll and somewhat taking up the role of a guide through this crazy decade as we try to determine the greatest music of the 1970s!

To start off this poll we will begin at year #1: 1970.

Post your list of your favorite songs and/or albums of 1970. The point scoring system is as so:

1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

However, feel free to post lists much longer than just a top 15!

The deadline is midnight (UTC) on March 1st.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please use the following format when posting your list:

Rank. Artist - Album/Song

EPs and compilations are not allowed. Quibbles about release dates will be settled by RateYourMusic, linked to 1970 below.

Let the listening and voting begin!

Thanks for doing this, Jimmy! I love the 70s (especailly the early years), so this should be fun.

General question: anybody know where I can hear the Hendrix/Redding Monetary album?

I decided to use only Latin American songs and albums. This in an attempt to balance somewhat the lack of representation of this part of America. Also I feel this way there will be a little more variety in the forum. So take these results as recommendations, too. :)

Edit: I'm not proud, but I've changed my results because it's time of strategic voting!

Jesus Christ Superstar, I'm loving the music from 1970 even more than I thought I would. There are still quite a few albums I want to listen to, but here is my list in progress.

I'll leave it till later to post the lists as I'm still working on them.

Just wanted to recommend the album Cold Fact by Rodriguez (already in a couple of people's lists) as it's one of the hidden gems of the year, in my opinion. Without the film Searching for Sugar Man, I don't know if any of us would have heard it, but thanks to that film he reached a much wider audience. But it could still be wider! If you're a fan of Dylan or folk rock from that era, I guarantee you'll like it.

DO NOT COUNT THIS... THIS IS A REPEAT

I thought it would be interesting to see what Jonah of 4-5 years ago (!!!) thought of music from 1970. Thanks to the great forum archives I can see what albums I submitted for the last poll that I remember back in 2009. Was there another one in between?

1. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - Burnt Weeny Sandwich - 1 - 1 (no change)
2. Velvet Underground - Loaded - 2 - 2 (no change)
3. The Who - Live at Leeds - 3 - 3 (no change)
4. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - Chunga's Revenge - 4 -4 (no change)
5. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew - 7 - 5 (+2)
6. The Moody Blues - A Question of Balance - 6 - 6 (no change)
7. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - Weasels Ripped My Flesh - 5 - 7 (-2)
8. John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band - 8 - 8 (no change)
9. Nick Drake - Bryter Layter - NEW
10. Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother - 10 - 9 (-1)
11. George Harrison - All Things Must Pass - 12 - 11 (+1)
12. Beach Boys - Sunflower - 10 - 12 (-2)
13. The Stooges - Fun House - 11 - 13 (-2)
14. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush - NEW
15. Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - Deja Vu - 13-15 (-2)

OUT - Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water (#14) and Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead (#15)

Such a treat to delve into my evolving musical tastes! Obviously a lot of my favorites are locked in for all time at the top. Bitches Brew goes up two because although it's an endurance test to listen to all the way it solid sense of ambition will always be admirable. My solid love of Zappa's early 70s output has tempered somewhat, since even I have to admit that the critically acclaimed Weasels Ripped My Flesh (down by 2) leans a little heavy on avant garde noise side of Zappa's sound and is sometimes annoying to listen to. The novelty of Beach Boys' Sunflower has worn off on me... it was exciting to learn about some of the Beach Boys post-Pet Sounds output, but this album separated from the subsequent 1971 Surf's Up (I have both albums on a single CD reissue) simply doesn't have enough stand out songs. Stooges Fun House gets respect, but I had trouble thinking of songs that I like from the album and just still give it props for its overall energy. Discovering Nick Drake over the past years has been great, which is why Bryter Layter gets a #9 debut, while I really had a huge gap in my classic rock listening file with After the Gold Rush, which I remedied after the 2009 poll. The album still didn't resonate with me right away, but I just haven't given it enough attention... because I'm a Neil Young fan in general it has to be on the list, albeit a lot lower than what many would agree with.

Anyone else want to try this?

THIS IS ANOTHER REPEAT.

SONGS

It looks like in the 2009 forum we were allowed to submit up to 20 songs and albums for points. So some between 16-20 moved up to point range this time around.

1. The Velvet Underground - Oh! Sweet Nuthin' - 8 - 1 (+7)
2. The Velvet Underground - New Age - 3 -2 (+1)
3. Pink Floyd - Summer of '68 - 4 - 3 (+1)
4. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - Sharleena - 7 - 4 (+3)
5. The Velvet Underground - Rock and Roll - NEW
6. The Moody Blues - It's Up To You - 5 - 6 (-1)
7. The Who - A Quick Ones, While He's Away - 1 - 7 (-6)
8. Derek and the Dominoes - Bell Bottom Blues - NEW
9. The Moody Blues - Question - 11 - 9 (+2)
10. The Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun - 10 - 10 (No Change)
11. George Harrison - My Sweet Lord - 18 - 11 (+7)
12. John Lennon - Mother - 9 - 12 (-3)
13. The Beatles - Get Back - NEW
14. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama - 16-14 - (+2)
15. George Harrison - Wah-Wah - (No Change)

OUT OF THE TOP 15 - Frank Zappa - The Little House I Used To Live In (2); Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - Carry On (6); Beach Boys - Slip On Through (12); Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (13); Frank Zappa - Chunga's Revenge (15)

A lot more volatile this time around. My top two from 2009 got kind of demoted because of technicalities. I guess I've concluded that Little House I Used to Live In is more of a centerpiece of the continuous musical composition that is the ENTIRE masterpiece of the Burnt Weeny Sandwich album and so I no longer think of it as a standalone amazing song. A Quick One, While He's Away - I've decided I like it more as a concept of a mini rock opera (rumored to be the story of Tommy's parents) than as a song by itself, and I find myself having trouble deciding whether the version from Live at Leeds or the studio version from A Quick One is what I prefer. So it drops. I'll admit the Lou Reed reflections are flowing strong in me which explains the Loaded tracks rising up, even the ones he doesn't sing on. Over the years, Sweet Nuthin' has just become such a beautiful song and one of my favorite tracks of all time. Rock and Roll was nowhere to be seen on my list last time, which is a mystery... maybe I felt the lyrical content was just too conventional. Now it feels like a solid Lou Reed statement. I also think I was suffering from Layla fatigue after listening to that album for the first time around the time of that poll... with distance comes perspective and Bell Bottom Blues ends up being the timeless standout anthem from that album for me.

Hey, Henry, I'm just going to put the Chicago song into your Top 15 songs, as "The Boxer" is actually from 1969, and was simply put on Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Bruce,

Thanks for looking at the list. In terms of "It Don't Matter to Me," you are right that the song appears on the band's debut album from 1969. But the hit version, as noted on the liner notes of their two-disc Retrospective set, was a new version, recorded in 1970 as a follow up to "Make It With You." According to David Gates, the earlier version was faster and had no strings. In terms of "Didn't I," I did once have it under 1969, but moved it back to 1970 because Discogs lists in 1970. I know that the song broke into the Billboard R&B charts in January. What info do you have on that track?

It's listed here at #52 on the WMCA survey for the week ending Jan 7, 1970. Hard to believe it was not out already in 1969.

http://www.musicradio77.com/wmca/survey ... an770.html

It also entered the Billboard pop chart for the week ending Jan 10, 1970. Again, very doubtful it was not released in 1969 if it was charting already in the first week of 1970.

I just checked the Cash Box R&B chart, and "Didn't I" entered that chart for the week ending Jan 3, 1970. Those charts were done a few days ahead of the issue date, so the record was definitely out already in 1969.

It's also going to make my top 10. #3 probably. It's great that it's doing so well. When I first saw the AM top 3000 songs that was the song I was most surprised to see it wasn't in the list, because I was under the impression that it was one of the great classics of rock music.

Okay, here we go with the dreaded 70s... Fortunately it starts with a pretty great year, most of those albums being even better than I remembered. Don't expect albums lists from me from 73 to 76 though, I consider this period the very bottom of the past 50 years.

Albums :

1) Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
2) Exuma - Exuma
3) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
4) Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
5) Black Sabbath - Paranoid
6) The Beach Boys - Sunflower
7) Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
8) The Stooges - Fun House
9) Exuma - Exuma II
10) Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
11) Led Zeppelin - III
12) The Last Poets - The Last Poets
13) The Velvet Underground - Loaded
14) Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
15) George Harrison - All Things Must Pass

I would have liked some French female on my list, because Brigitte Fontaine and Catherine Ribeiro sure released impressive music... but I find those albums much more impressive than enjoyable to be honest.
On a unrelated note, Black Sabbath's first titled album is my favorite Led Zeppelin album

Songs :

1) Simon and Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy In New-York
2) Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You
3) Tim Buckley - Song to the Siren
4) Black Sabbath - War Pigs
5) The Last Poets - Niggers are Afraid of Revolution
6) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Ramble Tamble
7) Toots and the Maytals - Pressure Drop
8) Exuma - Fire in the Hole
9) Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
10) Elton John - Your Song
11) The Velvet Underground - Oh Sweet Nuthin'
12) The Kinks - Lola
13) Exuma - Exuma, The Obeah Man
14) Black Sabbath - Iron Man
15) Neil Young - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
16) Jackson 5 - I'll be There
17) Black Sabbath - N.I.B.
18) The Stooges - T.V. Eye
19) Alice Cooper - i'm Eighteen
20) Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours

I like Black Sabbath more as a whole, but Paranoid has the 2 best songs !
My very favorite version of Song to the Siren (over the one in Starsailor and the one from This Mortal Coil) is Tim's performance in 68 on The Monkees show, but then again I like the straightforward Tim more than the experimenting one ; that being said the Starsailor's version is still a haunting masterpiece. Pat Boone's, Robert Plant and The Czars' versions are not bad either.

If it was possible to give negative points, mine would go to Layla and other assorted songs and to God !
