"Fox On The Run" is from a few years later.

What is the difference between #130 and #204?

Also, this is from 1972. It wasn't on the original version of the "America" LP.

I just want to clarify before I post my own lists: what year should we count "Life on Mars?" for? It's one of my all time favorite songs, but I'm confused at its year of release. It was first included on the album Hunky Dory for 1071, but only released as a single in 1973. And yes, Bruce, I am actually seeking a possible answer from you on this.

I'd say 1971, because presumably a single could finally be released or be a hit any old year. Like, I'm working a bit on my 1972 recommendation thread (I assume I'm the guy for this, now), and I noticed that the biggest hit song of 1972 is "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which was released as a single that year but came out on LP 3 years earlier. Being featured in a Clint Eastwood movie ended up making all the difference -- but hell, that could have just as well never occurred.

Whenever it's first released is where it belongs. 1971.

Ah, nuts. And so the only top 40 hit single about cannibalism (seriously!) ends up cannibalizing itself!

Not that it makes any difference for the calculations, but:

Indeed! Have you heard Jeanette's more famous and upbeat "Porque te vas"? It will be even higher in my list (1974).

No, Jeanette was completely unknown to me. Now listening to the song on spotify ... very cute.

1971

The year I was born (just barely, since my birthday’s January 1). Very unusual for so many of my favorite albums not to have a single song in my Top 40, though they’d all be well-represented in my Top 100 if I weren’t too lazy to expand my list that far.

Albums:
1. Bill Withers—Just As I Am
2. Marvin Gaye—What’s Going On
3. Yes—Fragile
4. Can—Tago Mago
5. Led Zeppelin—IV
6. Gil Scott-Heron—Pieces Of a Man
7. The Mahavishnu Orchestra—The Inner Mounting Flame
8. John Lennon—Imagine
9. Pink Floyd—Meddle
10. Leonard Cohen—Songs Of Love and Hate
11. Miles Davis—A Tribute To Jack Johnson
12. The Who—Who’s Next
13. Jethro Tull—Aqualung
14. Sly and the Family Stone—There’s a Riot Goin’ On
15. The Beach Boys—Surf’s Up

Honorable Mention: I just started listening to “Persepolis” by Iannis Xenakis over the past couple of days and it’s truly amazing. Unfortunately, I haven’t had enough time to completely process it yet, so it’ll have to wait for next time…

Songs:
1. Led Zeppelin—Stairway To Heaven
2. Carpenters—Superstar
3. Gil Scott-Heron—Home Is Where the Hatred Is
4. Pink Floyd—Echoes
5. Carly Simon—That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be
6. Bill Withers—Ain’t No Sunshine
7. The Who—Behind Blue Eyes
8. Funkadelic—Maggot Brain
9. Sly and the Family Stone—Family Affair
10. Bill Fay—Time Of the Last Persecution
11. Leonard Cohen—Avalanche
12. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young—The Lee Shore
13. Carole King—It’s Too Late
14. Marvin Gaye—What’s Going On
15. Al Green—Let’s Stay Together

16. Chico Buarque—Construção
17. Graham Nash—Chicago
18. The Doors—Riders On the Storm
19. Shuggie Otis—Strawberry Letter 23
20. Jethro Tull—Locomotive Breath
21. Marvin Gaye—Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)
22. Black Sabbath—Solitude
23. Slade—Coz I Luv You
24. Leonard Cohen—Famous Blue Raincoat
25. Pink Floyd—One Of These Days
26. Gil Scott-Heron—The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
27. Paul Revere & the Raiders—Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)
28. Three Dog Night—An Old Fashioned Love Song
29. T. Rex—Get It On (Bang a Gong)
30. Elton John—Tiny Dancer
31. Bill Withers—Better Off Dead
32. Miles Davis—Right Off

A great year indeed. Again only a song list from me.

1. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
2. Focus - Hocus Pocus
3. The Who - Baba O'Riley
4. Carole King - It's Too Late
5. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
6. The Beach Boys - Surf's Up
7. Joni Mitchell - A Case of You
8. John Lennon - Jealous Guy
9. Alice Cooper - Halo of Flies
10. The Doors - L.A. Woman
11. Don McLean - American Pie
12. Carole King -You've Got a Friend
13. Al Green - Let's Stay Together
14. Ike & Tina Turner - Proud Mary
15. Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks

It's a year of great epic songs and intimite ballads, a nice balance.

Chosing was tough though, because I would also have liked to include Elton John's Tiny Dancer; Funkadelic's Can You Get to That and Maggot Brain; T. Rex' Cosmic Dancer and Get It On; Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat; The Rolling Stones' Brown Sugar; Pink Floyd's Echoes; The Doors' Riders on the Storm; The Who's Behind Blue Eyes; Janis Joplin's Me and Bobby McGee; John Denvers Take Me Home, Country Roads and everything from Led Zeppelin IV besides Four Sticks and Going to California. All would stand a good chance of making my top 15 in any year, but not in 1971.

I'm very curious how this year-list wil end up looking, because it is inevitable that some classics will fall by the way-side, while lesser-know songs hardly stand a chance. I'm a bit dissapointed for the relatively few top 15 votes for songs by Joni Mitchell (who seems to have many fans on the forum) and a little saddened (but not surprised) by the ubiquity of two of the most overrated protest songs I know: Imagine and What's Going On. Oh well.

I like the 70s as a whole, but I definitely prefer the 70s once they get closer to the 80s. 1979 and 1970 are worlds apart in my view! With that in mind, I'm excited to make discoveries as we get closer to the end of the decade.

[9] David Bowie - ''Oh, You Pretty Things''
[10] T. Rex - ''Get It On''
[11] T. Rex - ''Jeepster''
[12] T. Rex - ''Mambo Sun''
[13] T. Rex - ''Lean Woman Blues''

The middle years were terrible IMO. I like 1970, 1971 and 1972 the best, but 1979 would be next. When punk and new wave got going the music was much better than it was in the really dark years (1974-1976).

That's uncommon enough but I agree with Bruce on that, 74-76 is the period I like the less in the past 50 years.

1) Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
2) Led Zeppelin - IV
3) Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
4) Can - Tago Mago
5) Gil-Scott Heron - Pieces of a Man
6) The Beach Boys - Surf's Up
7) Janis Joplin - Pearl
8) Faces - A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse
9) Sly & the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
10) The Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame
11) Joni Mitchell - Blue

If the end of Tago Mago was as good as the 40 first minutes, it might have topped my list... but the last couple of tracks are terrible to my ears. Talking about krautrock, Faust's self-titled is a new contender as AM3000 album I am the least likely to listen to again... ever... please...
I didn't expect to enjoy Faces that much, especially given how most of Every Picture Tells a Story leaves me quite cold.
And I would have liked to have the time to relisten to Hunky Dory which I remember not liking much despite being only released a year before Ziggy Stardust, my favorite album of the decade (but as it will make it to the final list anyway, I will have plenty more time).

Songs :
1) Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
2) Leonard Cohen - Avalanche
3) Gil-Scott Heron - Home is Where the Hatred Is
4) T. Rex - Cosmic Dancer
5) The Who - Baba O'Riley
6) Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks
7) Can - Halleluwah
8) The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
9) David Bowie - Life on Mars ?
10) Eric Bogle - And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda
11) John Lennon - Jealous Guy
12) Al Green - Let's Stay Together
13) Elton John - Tiny Dancer
14) Rod Stewart - I Know (I'm Losing You)
15) Can - Paperhouse
16) Led Zeppelin - Rock'n'Roll
17) The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
18) The Who - Behind Blue Eyes
19) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
20) Bob Marley - Sun is Shining
21) Gilbert Montagné - The Fool

Looks like Home is Where the Hatred Is might stand a chance to make it to the final list, I keep my fingers crossed...

1975 actually seems to be my favorite year of the decade, with not one but two great Dylan albums (I count The Basement Tapes of course), Born to Run, Horses, Toys in the Attic, Parliament-Funkadelic's finest (Mothership Connection), maybe Pink Floyd's best (Wish You Where Here) and great (if not best) work by Neil Young, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson and Lou Reed. And that's only the top of the heap. Lot of great artists working on the top of their game in my opinion. If making a top 15 songs for 1971 was difficult, 1975 is going to be an outright battlefield.

1974 however is probably the weakest year of the decade. 1976 isn't a standout, but also not particularly weak in these eyes.

I love "Bring Me Coffee or Tea"! I think it's the perfect comedown from all the craziness earlier in the album, relaxed but somehow there's still the sense of something sinister lurking beneath the surface.

Faust is certainly an acquired taste; it looks like Tago Mago might be the sole krautrock representative from this year. Where's all the Ash Ra Tempel fans?

I am a bit surprised that "Who's Next?" didn't crack your top 15.
Well to be honest I am always also a it surprised not to be more convinced by the rest of the album !

Perhaps you might listen again to one or more of the following songs from the album (numbers in parentheses indicate the song placement in my songs list for 1971):

The Song Is Over (3)
Bargain (43)
Going Mobile (56)
Getting In Tune (59)
My Wife (89) - admittedly an acquired taste given Entwhistle's vocals
