Recommendation Thread: 1971

(Evel Knievel successfully jumping 19 cars—a world record—at the Ontario Motor Speedway, February 1971)

Welcome to what may be the most spectacular year of the 1970s! One of my earliest posts here listed the Rolling Stone year-end awards from 1968-1976, and in the 1971 awards, the magazine awarded three albums—Tapestry, What’s Going On, Who’s Next—the Album of the Year. Now, this was well before the era of impeccably groomed & ranked top 50 EOY lists, but it still seems like an appropriate choice—1971 holds the record on the AM site for most albums in the all-time top 100 (nine), including my favorite Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, T. Rex, and Who albums, as well as the #1 AM album of the decade. This is one of those years like 1967 or 1991 where quite a few albums could have been the runaway AM album of the year winner if it had been anything like a normal year.

Billboard's Best-Selling Album of 1971 in the United States: Various Artists – Jesus Christ Superstar
Billboard’s top single of 1971: Three Dog Night – Joy To The World
Biggest Hit Single of 1971 (Wikipedia, 1971 in Music): George Harrison – My Sweet Lord
This is all music from 1970 :(

Image
In less pleasing news for Mr. Gaye, the first Pazz & Jop awards go out for 1971 (published the following February). This is the only year that includes and merges a readers poll, and both the readers and critics pick Who’s Next for #1, while What’s Going On is entirely unranked, Sticky Fingers and Blue fare well at #2 and #9 in the merged totals, and Led Zeppelin IV scrapes #30 out of 30. As far as Black Sabbath’s Paranoid goes, released in the U.S. in January ’71, well, Rolling Stone cracked a joke in their 500 Greatest Albums book like, “Try going into a time machine and telling a critic from 1971 that he’d still have to write about Black Sabbath in 2005.” If you could imagine the P&J critics & readers submitting a 1971 list for this forum today, I’d bet their lists would look a bit different now. So keep looking out for those dead-last and unranked albums…

Most of my '70s picks are on this site already. Here's a few that aren't (plus Baba O'Riley).

***Some 1971 landmarks (good, bad, ugly, take your pick)***
Some of these are a preview for next year

---The (future) Eagles play together for the first time, backing Linda Ronstadt at a summer show at Disneyland.

---July: Jim Morrison and Louis Armstrong pass away a few days from each other. (If only I could find the Saturday Night Live picture with Val Kilmer and Tracy Morgan playing these two guys in the same band.)

---August 1: The Concert for Bangladesh takes place, the first mega-benefit concert (for refugees following both a cyclone and civil war). George Harrison blamed infamous Rolling Stones/Beatles manager Allen Klein for much of the money being held in escrow and not being sent until ten years later. (Klein received a jail sentence for tax evasion for defrauding the Concert for Bangladesh and UNICEF.)

---November: In an early example of Anglo-worldbeat, Paul Simon records “Mother and Child Reunion” in a new genre that he’s never heard of called reggae, after heading over to Kingston, Jamaica to attempt a ska version.

---December 4: Some stupid with a flare gun burns down the Montreux Casino.

A Tribute to Jack Johnson by Miles Davis has production very much in the rock style, so even if one doesn't like jazz usually, one might like this album.

Don't forget two of the seminal classics of glam rock: Electric Warrior by T. Rex and Hunky Dory by David Bowie, particularly the latter, as it seems to me many of our voters are not paying him as much attention for this decade, which he practically owned like Prince did in the 80s. Instead, a lot of soft folk rock and poppy stuff is doing better than usual, like Sonofsamiam said (not chastising people for liking those genres or anything, but just want other great genres like Glam Rock, as well soul and prog/hard rock that seem to be struggling a bit to do a little better as well).

It was discussed here too how Who's Next actually has three classic songs instead of two. This somehow has slipped from acclaim or something:
I am one of those people who finds Bowie a little bit overrated, but Hunky Dory is my favorite of his and it will be high on my list.

His rank on AM is certainly far higher than his actual status at the time in the 1970s, at least here in the USA. Most people never even heard of him until he had his first big American hit single in 1973. In the 1970s it was between Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder and Elton John for who was the biggest name in music for the decade. I guess Bowie's status was much greater in other parts of the world than it was here.

Bowie is not even in the top 10 on the DDD list of the greatest artists of the 1970s.

One of my all time favorite songs and my favorite from my home country is from 1971: Hocus Pocus by Focus. It contains some of the greatest guitar riffs ever and definitely the best yodelling in a rock song. It's one of the great weird songs:
Here's hoping against hope it makes the cut in the seventies top 150 here. It should at least appeal to lovers of guitar rock, who might already be familiar with it since it seems to be reasonably well known outside of Holland.

My favorite song of the seventies is also from 1971, but I doubt anyone here has heard of it. It's called Stairway to Heaven and is by a completely obscure band called Led Zeppelin.

If you're a fan of Fela Kuti, don't forget his terrific live album released this year, featuring Ginger Baker:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zWRjgathjA

Speaking of live albums, this might not be for everyone, but Emerson, Lake & Palmer, as well as releasing Tarkus this year, also recorded a live reinterpretation of Pictures at an Exhibition, including some blues jams and the wildest version of Nut Rocker put on record:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiRBQ_hSNt0

If you haven't heard it already, have a listen to Chico Buarque's Construção (here's the title track). One of my favourite discoveries from the Moderately Acclaimed competition, by far.

1971 seems a great year for hard rock, especially in the form of long songs and this one deserves more than a mention too:
Alice Cooper - Halo of Flies

This song was only released as a single in The Netherlands and here it's actually one of his most famous works, but I have a feeling it's somewhat overlooked elsewhere, even though to my ears it's hardly inferior to other long rockers of it's age like Child in Time or Won't Get Fooled Again. Any other fans of this song here?

Notice that the lyrics were racier on the original ("Sleep with you again" rather than "be with you again").

The lyrics may be racier (and I do really like the Delaney & Bonnie original), but, for me, "Superstar" was always about the haunting vocals of Karen Carpenter. It's definitely one of my personal favorite vocal performances and ranks very high on my 1971 list.

No argument here, but it explains why the song itself was somewhat hipper than the usual Carpenters material.

Wow! The last two songs mentioned in this thread are two of my top three songs of the year.

(Ironically, I fear that neither will make the next round, while the other song in my top three is a rather predictable choice that it's probably safe to say is a lock.)

I plan on ranking this slice of Bahamian funk high on my songs list:
Changing pace a bit, 1971 was also the year that Iannis Xenakis premiered his piece "Persepolis" as commissioned by the reigning Shah of Iran.

For albums, I hope that Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda won't be overlooked.

Not exactly an obscure song, though virtually nonexistent on the AM site, this year has my thus-far favorite version of "Reason to Believe," Tim Hardin's masterful tune as performed by Rod Stewart. Looking it up, I couldn't believe how many other musicians took a swing at this song, including, since 1966: Bobby Darin, the Youngbloods, Ricky Nelson, Marianne Faithfull, Peter, Paul and Mary, Cher, Glen Campbell, Andy Williams, The Carpenters (1970), Johnny Cash (1975), Wilson Phillips (1990 - I had zero recollection of this; calling it up on YouTube, I see why...), Rod Stewart again for his Unplugged show (giving him altogether his longest-charting single), Vonda "Ally McBeal" Shepard, Billy Bragg, and Rickie Lee Jones; and Neil Young and Crosby, Stills & Nash have each played a version live. I have not heard all of these, but the instrumentation and the vocal phrasing from Rod's '71 version have so far proven hard to beat.

I feel like a kid in a candy store: 1971 is a crazy year, way too many good songs to choose from ...

This year's guilty pleasure for me is John Denver with Take Me Home Country Roads.

Please don't forget to vote for this great song:

My music awareness started at the end of the seventies, with listening mainly to post-punk, new wave and later jangle pop. I have two older brothers from whom I got some 60s and 70s music injected at early age: Beatles, Stones, Bowie and of course Pink Floyd.

I remember this song very well, especially because of the animal sounds in the second half (pretty impressive for a 5 year old kid like me at that time):
Worth a listen and a vote.

Thanks for posting that Andre. The sound on that recording is phenomenal, especially the drums.

It is probably too late for any recommendations but I have not seen this great Australian classic on anyone's list yet

A bit late too but talking about Australian classics, the original version of "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" (of which we made the Pogues version reach our final 80s list) was released in 1971. The orchestration is not as great as the Pogues, but the great songwriting was already there !
It was picked as one of the 30 greatest australian songs ever by the Australasian Performing Right Association.
