I am currently listening to "The Moon and Antarctica" by Modest Mouse. I'm on an 8 hour bus ride so I'll probably be spinning quite a few of the albums in my collection

Even though it WAS a 2013 release, Black City Lights' Another Life is becoming the breakthrough album right now.

Re: Now Playing
Now playing a lot of "black music" (I hate this kind of discrimination). I have deep knowledge on some artists, but deep holes for others, so I'm currently trying to fill them up.

Next stop, probably another George Clinton album, my favourite discoveries so far. The two first Funkadelic albums are underrated masterpieces

Re: Now Playing
Still exploring, and here comes my first disappointment with the Temptations debut album, a band whom I otherwise love later songs, but on this one, there's really only "The Way You Do the Things You Do" that I can like, the rest is doo-wop stuff, and I actually don't like doo-wop except for one song. Besides, George Clinton still kicking, he's grown from pleasant surprise to personal cultural hero.

The Colour of Spring ~ Spirit of Eden ~ Laughing Stock ~ Mark Hollis
The four of them together make a brilliant quadrilogy. Played back-to-back but in reverse chronological order is bliss.

Why do you specifically prefer the reverse chronological order? Just curious...Matski wrote:

Mainly it's a preference to the way it flows between the four albums when played in that order:Gillingham wrote:Why do you specifically prefer the reverse chronological order? Just curious...
- The self-titled acts as a beautiful way to slowly warm into two more acclaim-garnering middle albums. When placed first it's sparser arrangement kinda feels like the-calm-before-the-storm, gently setting up the perfect mood.
- I like playing SoE after LS because of the intro to it's first track, 'The Rainbow' - the (trumpet?) refrain right at the beginning always felt to me like it was following on from something else similar - like SoE could have been the second half of a double album almost. Their kindred similarities means that LS works brilliantly as its first part surrogate, with the continuation from 'Runeii' into 'The Rainbow' not feeling too jarring to me.
- As a very sharp and diverse album, TCoS makes a great closer for me. Hollis' self-titled would make me feel too drowsy after listening to three other albums first. This adds a bit more kick just when its needed. Plus the climactic, choral showdown of 'Time-Its-Time' makes a great song to end it all on.
Feel free to try it out yourself, or recommend your own playing order if you have something different.

I tend to prefer to listen to another artist after an album by one artist. Two in a row is possible, but more than that is quite rare.

Re: Now Playing
That's understandable. I wouldn't listen to albums by the same artist back-to-back if I wasn't as well-acquainted with them first and didn't thoroughly enjoy listening to them. But the time just flies by when both those criteria are met.Gillingham wrote:Thanks for the explanation.

Hmm, feel another back-to-back album splurge coming on, this time thorugh the entire White Stripes discography. Though I may settle for listening to his debut solo album instead. Still, I'm also looking forward to his new album too!Maschine_Man wrote:I'm now spinning Broken Boy Soldiers, by the Saboteurs (it's an Australian copy). Notwist- Neon Golden. I feel this gem is a bit overlooked. It deserves recognition up their with Funeral, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Kid A as one of the most solid records of the 2000's
