Hello Zorg! I hope all is well!

Just so you are aware, I have now stepped away from running the first half of the polls, and (at least for this year), TimmyWing will compile the results. DaveC will probably take over for 1973 and 74. Sorry that I forgot to PM you about this major shake-up...

This is a fantastic song. I wonder whether "Where Were You When I Needed You" should be considered a separate song or part of Superwoman. I thoroughly enjoy the guitar vocal interplay in "Where Were You When I Needed You" and am interested in understanding whether you find it as compelling as I do.

Yeah, I hadn't heard the song for a little while when I posted this, but I had that hot jazz guitar in mind! I'd say I prefer that song over anything from Talking Book, and that I prefer Music of My Mind between the 2 albums.

13. Jimmy Cliff - You Can Get It If You Really Want
I'm afraid this was released as a single in 1970: http://rateyourmusic.com/release/single ... eally_want__/

I've been wondering about whether to include The Harder They Come on my personal list. My problem with it is that there's a lot of recycled material (compared to soundtracks like Superfly or Shaft) from Cliff's older albums. It seems other people's votes have guaranteed it a place in the final list though, so I might just let it be.

Oh yeah thanks for correction. Wikipedia has it wrong, it claims the single is from 1972!

And I would just include it, I mean the album was culturally a big thing in 1972, and officially was released in 1972. But I mean your point is good too, so idk.

It's called one song everywhere so why shouldn't it be here?

On another note, I've seen some votes for Ralph McTell's Streets of London, which first appeared on his 1969 album Spiral Staircase. So save it for the '60s lists!

Well, it's because the Transformer cover is one of my all-time favorites. I ultimately love all of the top 3 on my list quite dearly, and so, on another given day, the rankings between them could easily change.

If I hadn't limited myself re: maximum number of entries per album it might have been even more - my initial brainstorm list also included "The Night the Carousel Burned Down," "Song of the Viking," and "Slut."

None of these are from 72, unless the BS&T and Elvis are live versions. I don't think there was a live BS&T album then, looks like you're thinking of their greatest hits album from 1972. Those songs are all from 68-71.

18 and 207 are from 1971.
93 is from 1967
101 and 334 are from 1973

Bruce,

Thanks for reading through my list. You are correct on both counts. I have been using your 1970-1972 lists to check through the dates of my music library. I noticed one potential mistake in 1970. According to Discogs and Rate Your Music, "Somebody's Been Sleeping" was released in 1969.

As usual, only a song list:

1. Neil Young - Heart of Gold
2. Lou Reed - Perfect Day
3. The Temptations - Papa Was a Rolling Stone
4. Chi Coltrane - Go Like Elijah
5. Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street
6. Alice Cooper - School's Out
7. Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
8. Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion
9. Yes - Close to the Edge
10. Deep Purple - Highway Star
11. Nino Rota - The Godfather Waltz
12. Randy Newman - Sail Away
13. Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
14. Steely Dan - Reelin' in the Years
15. Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come

For the first time my #1 isn't the same one as the highest ranked of the year on Acclaimed Music. In fact, I don't vote for Superstition by Stevie Wonder at all, even though it's a very good song. However, if my choice Wonder song this year would have been Superwoman, but sadly they are both bubbling under. Along with:

Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar
Focus - Sylvia
Procol Harum - Conquistador (live)
Paul Simon - Me and Julio Down by the School Yard
Yes - And You and I
Nick Drake - Things Behind the Sun
The O'Jays - Back Stabbers
Lou Reed - Satellite of Love

Glad to finally get in The Temptations, who only just missed the cut the last two years. Also worth mentioning is Johnny Nash, because I usually don't like that type of feel good song, but this one always works for me.

That's wrong, it's one number after "Westbound #9" which was definitely 1970. I think they are going by the date on the label of the 45 which is the when the label was established, not when that particular record was reeleased.

I’m going to try to use these end-of-year lists as an excuse to update my Top 100 song lists, since most of them are extremely outdated. I’ll also try to listen to at least everyone’s Top 10 songs of each year, which provided a handful of new favorites this month.
