Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2014 (update July 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating and the number of reviews (out of 32 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Jenesaispop; Laut; LesInrocks; Mondosonoro; Music-story; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Playgroundmag; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spin; Tinymixtapes

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Irish Times, The Independent, Digital Spy, BostonGlobe, etc..

The lack of movement at the top reflects what has been said in the Albums of 2014 thread; after a relatively solid start to the year, there hasn't been a lot of good albums this spring/summer. Let's hope for a big fall.

Thanks again, OtisRedding. I appreciate your consistent work with MCCh.

Definitely - I can't imagine what could topple the higher positions. Even "Yeezus" only peaked at #9 last year, if my memory serves me correctly.

I don't particularly think that either Swans or The War on Drugs are bad fits for the "album of the year" position, but they definitely aren't walk-off situations like we've had most years in the last decade.

It hasn't been a great year so far to be honest. However, a lot of big names are putting out albums towards the second half of the year, so we'll see what happens in the fall/winter.

I will further echo the sentiment that 2014 has been underwhelming.

I have this theory about years though. For every great year, there's a year right next to it that is lackluster. Consider this (and remember, this is all my opinion, feel free to disagree)-

2007 - Great
2008 - Lackluster
2009 - Lackluster
2010 - Great
2011 - Lackluster
2012 - Great
2013 - Great
2014 - Lackluster

Maybe this is because some years "steal" the great albums from other years?

Also, I realize that breaking down years into "Great" and "Lackluster" is incredibly reductionist, but it gets my point across. In reality, the years would fall something like this-

Amazing Tier:

2007
2010

Really Good Tier:

2013
2012

Decent Tier:

2011
2008

Meh Tier:

2009
2014

I agree with your tiered approach, except that I would switch 2013 with 2007. I was completely blown away by last year.
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

A lot of the big indie artists seem to have fallen into a three year cycle, and I think the reason 2007, 2010, and 2013 were the standouts is because that's where The National and Arcade Fire (As well as the man the rest of you like better than I do) fall in the cycle.

If that pattern holds true we have Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes to look forward to this year.

That one man you speak of is supposed to be putting out a new record in September...
