Questions about anything.

Post by Romain » Mon Aug 11, 2014 9:44 am

Sorry, I don't found any topic where we can ask questions.

So, I have a question about a James Brown Song I was listening to on tape when I was a kid. I don't remember the title and I'm unable to found this song on internent.

The only thing I remember is the beginning of the song at the trumpet. A magnificient, long and blazing piece of trumpet. I know it's not much but it's the only thing I remember.

If someone can help me, I will be very grateful.

No.
But maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's only an instrumental in a meddley.

Thank you Miguel for your search but it's not that. James Brown doesn't sing in this song (or part of the song). In my memory, it was more melodic than funcky, a sublime piece of music.... but the memory ;)

No, man. You're thinking of "bee-boo-boo-bop, boo-boo-bop."

I know it's a very thin clue but I have nothing else. It's not important if nobody found the answer. I was hoping that the song is wellknown by the guys who love James Brown.

Sorry, I'm maybe a little too old to have look this show :D . But don't worry, I found myself a little bit ridiculous with my demand... but it's been 20 years since I seek this title by James Brown.

I will assume that the comment about Bruce is irony, right? :P

And yes, I sure am a fan of comics, as my avatar showcases. European at least, but I plan to delve into American and Japanese stuff some day.

The first looks like Luz do Sol from the psychedelic Fa-tal: Gal a todo vapor, while the second is from the more adult contemporary Minha Voz.

Thanks Stephan - Can you tell me if they are two versions of the same song?

No, they are not. The first is a Gal Costa original, the second is a cover, originally written by Caetano Veloso.

Edit: My bad, it looks like the first wasn't written by Gal either, the writers are Carlos Pinto and Waly Salomão.

Awesome - Thanks so much Stephan - the titles threw me off. I very much like the live version and went searching for a studio version of the same song, but kept running into the Veloso cover.

You have answered my question - much appreciated!

Ok Brad, I'm very sorry for taking so long to respond. I've been very busy lately.
I've heard the two songs closely, and although I do not know much Portuguese, (luckily it resembles Spanish), I realized that, yeah, they are not the same song.
It turns out that the first one (from the 1971 Fa-tal album) was written by Waly Salomão, with music from Jards Macalé.
Here are the lyrics:

Desta vez você chegou e arrebatou
Alegria e calma do meu lar
Desta vez você chegou e arrebatou
Alegria e calma do meu lar

Quando estiver assim não me apareça
Saia desapareça
Não me chegue assim desapareça
Saia desapareça da minha vista

Apareça como a luz do sol
Batendo na porta do meu lar
Apareça como a luz do sol
Batendo na porta do meu lar

Quero ver de novo a luz do sol
Quero ver de novo a luz do sol
Que me brilha ascende
Aquece e me queima
Batendo na porta do meu lar

Eu sou o sol
Ela é a lua
Quando eu chego em casa
Ela já foi pra rua

Quero ver de novo a luz do sol
Quero ver de novo a luz do sol
Quero ver de novo a luz do sol
Quero ver de novo a luz do sol

Meanwhile, the version from the 1972 album Minha Voz, was written by Caetano Veloso.
Here are the lyrics:

Luz do sol
Que a folha traga e traduz
Em verde de novo
Em folha, em graça, em vida em força, em luz
Céu azul que venha até onde os pés
Tocam na terra e a terra inspira e exala seus azuis
Reza, reza o rio,
Córrego pro rio, rio pro mar
Reza correnteza, roça a beira a doura areia
Marcha um homem sobre o chão
Leva no coração uma ferida acesa
Dono do sim e do não
Diante da visão da infinita beleza
Finda por ferir com a mão essa delicadeza coisa mais querida
A glória da vida
Luz do sol
Que a folha traga e traduz
Em verde de novo
Em folha, em graça, em vida, em força, em luz
Reza, reza o rio
Córrego pro rio, rio pro mar
Reza correnteza roça a beira a doura areia
Marcha o homem sobre o chão
Leva no coração uma ferida acesa
Dono do sim e do não
Diante da visão de infinita beleza
Finda por ferir com a mão
Essa delicadeza a coisa mais querida
A glória da vida
Luz do sol
Que a folha traga e traduz
Em verde de novo

Some acid house single questions: what versions of "Pump Up The Volume" and "808 State" are considered the "definitive" version?

Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Some acid house single questions: what versions of "Pump Up The Volume" and "808 State" are considered the "definitive" version?
Presumably you mean 808 State's "Pacific." In that case, the answer would be "Pacific 707." Dissenting opinions exist, but that is the version that appears on the A-side of the single release and is the one that would be played on radio and the once that critics lean on. "Pacific 202" (from the album 90) is rather similar to it but is longer. The original version from the Quadrastate EP is much different than 707 and 202 (more electro and minimal and more obviously influenced by Detroit Techno), but is not brought up as much as 707 though it is certainly worth hearing despite sounding underdeveloped compared to what would follow.

"Pump Up the Volume" is trickier because different versions of it were released in different regions due to issues of sampling clearance. The consensus definitive version would be the original UK 12" single version (it's the one that was a UK hit and it had a greater relevance in that country than elsewhere), but I prefer the A1 track on the US 12" single release. Although I feel less confident about this than for 808 State since I like 808 State much more.

Edit: "Pacific 707" is also that track that leads off 808 State's 808:88:98 compilation. No other mixes of "Pacific" are included on that comp, aside from a new remix of it seemingly recorded specifically for that album. Also, this reminded me that I didn't include 808 State's 90 on my Top 500 albums list. Oh well.
