Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 3

Post by Listyguy »

Last week we had some really tight matchups, let’s see what happens this week! This week’s brackets feature the overall number one seed (you all know what it is). Also, the deadline for next week is likely to not be exact (it may be many hours off in either direction) because I’ll be extremely busy and I don’t know when I’ll be able to post the results. You’ve been forewarned.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.

Here are the new brackets:

46. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
83. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)

53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)

1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)

34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

Whaa!?! Since when has Since I Left You been on Spotify? I'm pretty sure it hadn't been there for a while, so I hadn't bothered to check today. That's awesome. But alas, it seems I'm unable to update my original post with my newly updated Spotify playlist. I can't imagine why, though.

That's odd...did you add the song to the playlist embedded or did you make a new playlist?

174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)

181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)

204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)

1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)

It was insanely difficult to rank the top three songs in this bracket.

95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)

162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)

211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
83. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
46. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
Four solid songs.

204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
The Foos and Strokes songs were huge overplayed hits locally and in my case, familiarity often breeds ... disinterest?

129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
In this case, contempt. Daft Punk deserve to be remembered for something better than this.

34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)
Suzanne may be the best poem ever written. Not the best song, the tune is too forgettable, but the imagery is so beautiful.

We are we now? is an immediate ultimate classic for me.

181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)

256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
For The Avalanches, it's th kind of songs this forum help me to appreciate.

34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

Although the third bracket is the strongest in my humble opinion, the second and fourth brackets proved to be the most difficult to rank, and purely reflect my whims at the current moment :D

Obviously it doesn't matter who sings Leonard Cohen's songs, as "Suzanne" is clearly this week's "Hallelujah" with nothing but first and fourth places so far (of which 4 out of 6 are 4th places :angry-cussingblack: ).

Ah, but it does matter! I would have ranked almost any version of Hallelujah N. 1 (including Cohen, or the beautiful k.d. lang version) except for that sappy, whiny Buckley version.

83. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
46. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
No clear standout here, a slight edge to the best songs of the "let's try to emulate Queens of the Stone Age" era of the Arctic Monkeys.

76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
10 years ago I would have ranked Foo Fighters as the best band in activity, I don't like them quite as much now but there are still a bunch of their songs I cherish deeply : Low, My Hero, Hey Johnny Park, Good Grief and Everlong. I think Hey Johnny Park is the perfect balance of all the qualities that got Foo Fighters both some critical acclaim and lots of commercial success, making Dave Grohl the most likely next double Hall of Fame inductee.
6 years ago, despite not liking much the Stone Roses self titled album, I would have put I Am the Resurrection in my top 100 songs of all time. It's far from it now but should still save a top 500 spot, though I honestly don't care much about the song after the 4 min mark.
I really like the other 2 songs but they're both not the best of their respective albums.

129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
Frontier Psychiatrist is one the most fantastic wacky irresistible pieces of music to my hears, the choice of sample is perfect giving to the song a perfect flow. Strangely enough I found Ain't Misbehavin' hides the same kind of wackyness, especially during its bridge. It's not that surprising some crazy romantic guy like Michel Gondry built love for Fats Waller.
While I don't consider either the best song of 2013, I think Pitchfork got the order right between those 2 great hits... It's not 100% a vote against Get Lucky, because the competition is quite great, but isn't this song a bit repetitive ?

34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
No real comment, 4 songs I like but don't love.

Romain wrote:We are we now? is an immediate ultimate classic for me.
Yes, it's an excellent song. My friend Pepe and me are going to play it live in October at a Bowie tribute concert. Trying to sort out the chords I noticed the harmonic complexity of the song. Pepe send me an interesting song analysis in a blog for songwriters. I can't help but post the last paragraph of the article: "“Where Are We Now?” is a fantastic tune that shows us as composers that a little bit of complexity goes a long, long way. It’s a song that uses simple harmonic/melodic devices (moving back and forth between two different keys, for example) to keep things interesting. When all is said and done, listeners with no music analysis skills will love this tune without knowing all the little structural elements that make it so engaging." (Gary Ewer). That's how geniuses work (Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach and many more), you may think their songs are simple until you go deep on them, both the music experts and the casual listeners enjoy their songs with different levels (or deepness) of enjoyement.

83. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
46. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)

Such a strong bracket, love all 4 but the AM track is way to strong...

204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)

Another strong bracket with 4 excellent songs, just the way "I Am The Resurrection" builds throughout as the perfect ending to what is one my favorite albums ever. Feel bad for YYY's "Zero" because I have that song #1 in the next bracket.

1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)

Ugh.... the only song I like is "Get Lucky" and I think I need a year or two removed from that song to truly appreciate it. I know alot of people here on the forum are big fans of "Frontier Psychiatrist" but I just cannot get myself into that track after hearing it 4 or 5 times...

95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)
34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)

Never been a fan of Cohen, never will be... Tough choice between "Step" and "My Favourite Things", just been enjoying VW alot more lately...

2. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
3. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
4. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)

1. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)

211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
83. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
46. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
Easy choice here. The Costello song is excellent. The AM song is pretty good, and the Bowie song is OK.

76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
"Everlong" was in my top 30 for the 2012 songs poll. I haven't made a list since, but I'd imagine it's still around there. "Someday" is a great track from a great album, and the other two are eh.

1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
I'm not a fan of this bracket, outside of "Get Lucky". The Drake song is awful (excuse my redundancy), and the other two are nothing special either.

162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)
I love the jazz track here. "Suzanne" is good too, as is "Step".

211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)

I like them all, but ranking wasn't difficult.

53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
The first 3 are near enough a tie.

1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
I have not learned to appreciate The Avalanches. The first two are not among my favourites for 2013, but good enough to win this weak group.

34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
I'm in the other camp this week. How could Suzanne not be the best song in this group?

46. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
83. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)

"L.E.S. Artistes" is a great pop song that wins a group full of rock heavyweights. I really like the Costello song which is good enough for second. "Do I Wanna Know?" is a fine rock song, but doesn't do much for me given my disinterest toward the genre these days. I never quite got into the new Bowie album, so the old man is at the bottom here.

181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)

Hate this bracket. The Strokes win with one of their more boring songs. The others are ranked more by whim than by conviction except that The Stone Roses are at the bottom because I never understood what British critics see in them.

129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)

I love Since I Left You, but only a few tracks on the album work removed from the context of the album. "Frontier Psychiatrist" is among those few and tops the group easily. "Hold On, We're Going Home" barely edges out "Get Lucky" in the battle of hit 2013 singles that were not my favorite songs on their respective albums. Fats Waller, well, before my time I suppose.

162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)
34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)

Not a huge fan of this bracket so Coltrane wins it almost by default. I have no strong opinions on "Do You Love Me" or "Suzanne." I disliked Vampire Weekend's last album and "Step" in particular.

174. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
211. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)

I'm going to keep the first bracket as it came. L.E.S. Artistes is in my AT-Top 50, I'm always a fan of a song with clapping in it.

76. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
53. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
181. The Strokes - Someday (2001)
204. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)

The video directed by Michel Gondry is why this song is #1.It's brilliant.

129. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
256. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
128. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)

Frontier Psychiatrist is in my AT-Top 10. It's such an electric and textural song. Get Lucky is, in my opinion, the most over-rated song of the last few years. This is what ruins what I initially considered a perfectly good song. I'm not even much of a fan of RAM as a whole, and my favorite Daft Punk Album is Human After All, so maybe it's just me. The Fats song is brilliant and Drake is much better than I expected.

95. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
34. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
162. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
223. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

I'm not at all familiar with the three 60s songs, but they are all enjoyable.

David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013): 8.5
Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978): 7
Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008): 7
Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013): 6.5

Bowie is the obvious favorite of mine, and he wins pretty easily. "Where Are We Now?" is one of my favorites from The Next Day, even if "Heathen (The Rays)" is a stronger effort in a similar vein, in my opinion. The Elvis track just edges out Santigold, who has interesting music but is dragged down by her vocals. I far prefer her work with RES. I don't know much Arctic Monkeys, but this track didn't really move me much.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009): 10
The Strokes - Someday (2001): 8.5
The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989): 8
Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997): 5.5

Fuckin' ay! What a group! "Everlong" fits neatly in with my opinion that Foo Fighters are forever chained to a heavy anchor of complete mediocrity. "I Am the Resurrection" is a nice song that turns very nice during its extended outro."Someday" is such a short, sweet slice of simple Heaven amidst an album full of quick blasts of limitless fun. But "Zero". Oh, "Zero"! "Maps" was such a meaningful song for me. It came out in the U.S. while my Dad had just gone into the hospital following a stroke, and I was in turmoil trying to finish my master's degree in Utah while flying back and forth to Michigan at a moment's notice for family reasons. Needless to say, "Maps" completely walloped me with its pleading desperation. In any case, Fever to Tell and Show Your Bones, while good, had no songs that could threaten "Maps". But then came "Zero", a song of unrelenting, ass-kicking, devastatingly complete TRIUMPH, right up there with Echo and the Bunnymen's "Never Stop" and Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Dazzle". The persistent synth blasts set the whole thing up wonderfully, making it known without a shadow of a doubt that this song was going to build to dizzy heights, and if the dancefloor perfection of the first few minutes wasn't enough to jolt me into helpless displays of unabashed dancing, that massive riff that bursts through the speakers around 2/3 of the way in is nothing short of an electric socket firing in my feet! Karen O delivers the vocal of her life, and with just cause - this is a song that is MEANT to be shrieked at full lung from the rooftops of the tallest buildings! I still would probably place "Maps" higher in my all-time list, but I listen to "Zero" a lot more. If I had the time I'd make a video for it. :P

The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000): 8
Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013): 8
Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013): 7
Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929): 6

I think I'd heard "Frontier Psychiatrist" before, but its originality and eerie tint really connected with me this time and I couldn't look past it! "Get Lucky" is great fun, and I'm happy it took off like it did. Still, I prefer other artists who do this sort of style more (e.g. Chromeo). I'm not sure I'd ever heard a Drake song before - I only know him as an avid Toronto Raptors fan. I had assumed I wouldn't care for his music, but I was quite pleasantly surprised. The Fats Waller track is nice enough, and I really enjoy the piano, but it can't overcome my steep era bias.

John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961): 8
The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962): 7
Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967): 6
Vampire Weekend - Step (2013): 6

What was that about era bias? I'm a novice when it comes to jazz, but I do own and enjoy A Love Supreme, even if I tend to prefer other artists like Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders. But "My Favourite Things" is performed so richly that I can't help but feel better when listening to it. "Do You Love Me" is one of the very few "oldies" that I actually like - a real mover. I don't think I'd ever heard a Leonard Cohen song before listening to I'm Your Man for the 80s poll, and I had assumed I wouldn't really care for his singer/songwriter stuff. But "Suzanne" was decent. Funnily enough, my favorite part about the song as well as "Steps" was the female backing vocals. As for "Steps", it probably is my favorite VW song. I really don't care for them.

Yup. I have never understood the acclaim. It's just not anything special to me, and with that feeling the noisy layers during the last two minutes are just annoying.

Between this and the Pointer Sisters song annoying you with its length, I think we're on the verge of a breakup. :o

1. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
2. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
3. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
4. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)

Once again for me, the test of time is the deciding factor; I love, love, love “Do I Wanna Know?”, but E.C.’s galvanizing Nick Lowe cover has been part of my life for so long that it can’t be anything but #1 here. I have to give The Next Day a few more listens before its songs have the same impact on me as classic-era Bowie (I do think it’s a terrific comeback record), and while I like the Santigold track it’s a very easy #4.

1. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
2. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
4. The Strokes - Someday (2001)

An outstanding bracket, top to bottom. “Everlong” – easily, easily the best thing the Foos have ever done – has been a particular favorite since the moment I first heard it, so it comfortably gets the nod over the Roses’ definitive epic and YYY’s startling reinvention of themselves. “Someday” is great, but it isn’t even a particular standout on its own album.

1. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
2. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
3. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
4. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)

The Song of the Decade (so far) is the clear winner, although #’s 2 and 3 are both pure pop entertainment of the highest order (even though they couldn’t possibly be more different). Drake just doesn’t do much for me, especially on a track where he doesn’t rap.

1. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
2. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
3. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
4. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

Another brilliant bracket, one that’s so good that the Contours’ early Motown classic earns my first, highly coveted SH2B4 (Something Has To Be #4) of this tournament. Cohen’s poetic masterpiece edges out the second track from my favorite album of 2013 to appear in this tournament (I believe it’s the last, which is kind of a shame – I’d love to see “Hannah Hunt” or “Unbelievers” or the magnificently weird “Hudson” in this game). Coltrane’s epic riff on what was already a classic tune trails ever-so-slightly behind.

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)
Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)

The Arctic Monkeys song is one of my absolute favorite of last year, and of the decade so far. Really reminiscent of Black Sabbath or Queens of the Stone Age. It's such a sexual, groovy, heavy song that perfectly embodies everything I love from "AM". This Elvis Costello song is a very close second, a great example of the new wave, post-punk that made him famous. "L.E.S. Artistes" is good, but a bit overrated. And while "The Next Day" was certainly a good album, it still doesn't hold a candle to Bowie's absolute best music. "Where Are We Now?" is solid, but not good enough to rank higher than 4th.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
The Strokes - Someday (2001)
The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)

Another strong bracket, leading off with "Zero", a pure and amazing blast of synthpop from one of last decade's best bands. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs transformation from their punk roots to the synthpop of "It's Blitz!" should have been a disaster on paper, but the result is nothing short of phenomenal. Probably my second favorite song of this week, next to "Get Lucky" (though "Do I Wanna Know?" is close). "Everlong" is the Foo Fighters at their best, and proves that post-grunge really isn't all terrible. The Strokes as a band outclass the Foo Fighters any day of the week, but "Everlong" is the best Foo Fighters song while "Someday" is probably the 10th best Strokes song, so Foo Fighters have a slight upper hand. And while The Stone Roses debut is a great album, "I Am the Resurrection" isn't even close to my favorite off the album, and so is last in this strong bracket.

Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)
Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)

I don't think there's much more I can say about "Get Lucky" that hasn't been said before. It's an amazing slice of disco, funk, pop, etc. and entirely worthy of the praise it gets. "Frontier Psychiatrist" is a bit behind, it's a very good song, but there's just as many songs at it's level on "Since I Left You" that it doesn't feel like the big stand out to me like it does to most others. Still, "Since I Left You" is in my top 50 albums of all time, so "Frontier Psychiatrist" has to rank highly. "Hold On We're Going Home" is hands down the best thing Drake has ever laid his hands on, a beautiful song that people will be dancing to one their weddings 50 years from now. And "Ain't Misbehavin'" comes in last, which is probably due to a helping of era bias on my part. It's enjoyable, but it didn't move me all too much.

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

This is easily the weakest bracket here. I'm not huge on Leonard Cohen, but "Suzanne" is very poetic folk from a solid, but somewhat overrated album. "My Favorite Things" is classic Coltrane, but I'm a bigger fan of his stuff from "A Love Supreme" and "Giant Steps". I'm a HUGE Vampire Weekend fan, and they're one of my favorite artists from this decade, and "Modern Vampires" was my favorite album of 2013. However, despite liking "Step" quite a bit (it made my top 50 songs of last year), I've always found the amount of attention and love it gets to be puzzling. "Diane Young", "Unbelievers", and "Ya Hey" are all leaps and bounds better than it. And "Do You Love Me" is easily last, an enjoyable "oldie", but that's about all I can say about it.

I, for one, loved "Step" and think it deserves all the acclaim it gets. If there's one song from the album that I think might get more love than I would expect, it's "Diane Young." I really liked it too, though, don't get me wrong. It did have one of my favorite lyrics from 2013: "Irish and proud, baby, naturally, but you got the luck of a Kennedy."

That reminds me, is anyone here interested in a poll on the greatest songs ever written or the greatest songwriters? I'm not sure if something like that has been done on this forum. I know we've got a lot of games and polls going on right now, though, so if it has to wait, I'm fine with that.

2. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
6. Santigold - L.E.S. Artistes (2008)
7. David Bowie - Where Are We Now? (2013)
12. Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (1978)

Do I Wanna Know is perhaps my favorite rock song of the last few years and not much could possibly steal it's thunder. This doesnt mean the competition isn't stiff, with a great, fresh pop song from Santigold and some wonderful melancholy from Bowie. Costello is very good too, but outclassed here.

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (2009)
8. The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (1989)
14. Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
16. The Strokes - Someday (2001)

The most rocking bracket we have had up til now in this game, but not the best. Ironically, it's the synths that win out here, with a great rush delivered by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The Stone Roses deliver a great epic, with an amazing outro. The Foo Fighters and The Strokes however have never been particular favorite rock bands of mine and these two songs have never been able to change my mind. Someday actually just sounds like another Is This It track to me. Don't know why that should be considered a standout.

3. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (2000)
4. Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929)
9. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (2013)
13. Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (2013)

Now this is a great list. I didn't know the first two, but are they great surprises. Two wacky songs, but very different. Highly original and totally captivating. They will be two of my great discoveries of this game for sure. Fats Waller manages to be completely fresh after 85 years! Daft Punk has nothing on them, I'm afraid. I like Get Lucky a lot, but it isn't really my favorite track of Random Access Memory and it's a rare case in which I prefer the shorter radio edit, because at a certain point it doesn't seem to go anywhere anymore. Drake finally delivers a good pop song, but like Costello before him he is simply outclassed.

1. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)
10. Vampire Weekend - Step (2013)
11. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (1961)
15. The Contours - Do You Love Me (1962)

Put me in team Suzanne. It's a masterpiece. Of poetry, yes, but I find the musical accompaniment terrific and the song even finds great use of Cohens limited, but warm vocal abilities. Besides that one this is my least favorite group. Vampire Weekend and Coltrane do very well, but have done better things and The Contours deliver a like-able song, but nothing more.

Here are this week’s results, with total points followed by number of first place votes. Also, feel free to double check this for me, as I didn’t have time to:
1. Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know? (77, 8)
2. Elvis Costello – (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding (74, 10)
3. Santigold – L.E.S. Artistsed (70, 6)
4. David Bowie – Where Are We Now? (59,4)
While the Arctic Monkeys were in first place for a good portion of the week, Elvis Costello came on strong at the end, but to no avail. The song’s opponents are unknown.

1. Foo Fighters – Everlong (75, 9)
2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (72, 8)
3. The Stone Roses – I Am the Resurrection (70, 8)
4. The Strokes – Someday (63, 3)
In what was a close bracket that never really felt close, Dave Grohl and theboys move on to the next round. Once again, their opponents are a mystery at the moment.

1. Daft Punk – Get Lucky (84, 12)
2. The Avalanches – Frontier Psychiatrist (81, 11)
3. Fats Walker – Ain’t Misbehavin’ (68, 4)
4. Drake – Hold On, We’re Going Home (47,1)
The week’s top point getter was none other than our number one seed, although The Avalanches did put up a fight. The song’s rivals for the next round will be determined in the future weeks.

1. Leonard Cohen – Suzanne (82, 13)
2. John Coltrane – My Favorite Things (76, 7)
3. Vampire Weekend – Step (66, 5)
4. The Contours – Do You Love Me (56, 3)
So after letting John Coltrane get an early lead, Leonard Cohen takes the bracket. One of the song’s opponents in round 2 will be “The Rip”. That’s all we know right now.
