Poll - Songs and Albums of 1977

Post by Zorg »

PSAs

Zombie (album) is not eligible for this year
Zombie (song) is not eligible for this year
The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack is eligible for this year
Go Your Own Way is not eligible for this year

1977. My favourite year in music, beating out all of the late 60s years, 1991, 1994, 2007 and 2010 easily. Crushing all the others in its path. It's awesome that the deadline for this coincides with the deadline for the All-time albums poll, so hopefully people's all time album lists will have more 1977 representation. Anyway, enough of me....

Post your list of your favorite songs and/or albums of 1977. The point scoring system is as so:

1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

However, feel free to post lists much longer than just a top 15!

The deadline is midnight on October 1st, but I will be lenient if you're close to finishing a list.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

EPs and compilations are not allowed. Quibbles about release dates will be settled by RateYourMusic.

Happy listening! :music-listening: :music-guitarred: :music-rockon: :happy-partydance:

Time to finally give Sex Pistols another listen. I listened to Ramones last month, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - not as stupidy slogany punky guitars as I had imagined it would be. But Sex Pistols might be a step too far...

Isn't ROCK MUSIC the biggest dicovery in mankind? "Oh, this ROCKS!"

Walking upright and finding a sharp stone, come on... I can agree on talking (nice work, Green Eyes!), but gravity and movig stars...

It's fun, painful, protest and can be found when inspired. And it involves positive and negative feelings working in harmony. And idiots with a smart manager can make a mark on history! R-O-C-K, rock'n'roll music...

How do we handle albums that were held back by the artist or label and not released in stores until years later?

Personally I consider both Smile and The Basement Tapes to be 1967 albums.

Record some great music and play it for a small circle of people, it doesn't exist, slap a bar code on it and stick it on a store shelf, it does exist? I don't know about that.

For a game like this you need to pick a year some way. Recording dates are tricky. To go with them would require a lot of research and some albums are recorded over a longer period, spanning maybe two and on rare occasions more years. The Basement Tapes doesn't only consist of songs recorded in 1967, but also contains later material from the Band. Smile (if we're talking about the 2011 compilation) was worked on until right before it's release a few years ago. It wasn't finished in 1967.

The release year is a clear date to pin down (bar a few exceptions) and pretty much the only moment from which the general public can hear the recording. If a recording has never been released officially and you still want to include it, feel free, but don't be surprised if nobody else votes for it. If it has been released, is it such a problem to take that date as a guideline?

I think it is only an issue when it becomes part of an album in later reeditions, because "in my mind", Dot Dash and Options R are part of Pink Flag since I have always known the album that way, a bit like Dear God is integral part of Skylarking for most people, or Push It in Hot Cool & Vicious (or Gamera in Millions Now Living Will Never Die but this one must be an issue only to me). So I would never think about voting for Dot Dash in 89 for example (well, maybe now I will).
But yeah, I agree that release date should be the guideline.

I think of Basement Tapes in terms of the bootlegs I've heard of the original recordings, not what my father ardently refers to as 'Robbie Robertson revisionism'.

But when did the bootlegs get released?
When did he release it to his inner circle? 1967.

When did somebody slap a barcode on it and put it on a store shelf? I don't know, but I think it's far more relevant to put things together that were created in the same musical culture, not just that were affixed a barcode at around the same time.

There are other cases too where there were bootlegs passed around secretly by audiophiles then decades later somebody 'Officially' compiled them. Does the existence of music really depend on whether it's tagged, filed and tracked by a limited liability corporation? If it is out there and people are listening to it, in my mind it is 'released'.

By the way, I will probably reveal these results quite late, as I'll be doing my ballot for the all time list up until the very end of the month :)

Re: Poll - Songs and Albums of 1977

Post by jamieW »

Absolutely one of my favorite years: Pop, Punk, Disco, Ambient, New Wave, Dub—all wonderful. (1967 would be the only year I can definitively say I liked better.) Also, since we voted for “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten” in the 80s poll, I figured it obviously isn’t eligible here. Still, since several sources list it as 1977, I thought I’d place it where it would’ve ranked.

Albums:
1. Soundtrack—Saturday Night Fever
2. Fleetwood Mac—Rumours
3. David Bowie—Low
4. Television—Marquee Moon
5. Iggy Pop—Lust For Life
6. Dennis Wilson—Pacific Ocean Blue
7. Brian Eno—Before and After Science
8. David Bowie—“Heroes”
9. Augustus Pablo—King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown
10. Sex Pistols—Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols
11. Kraftwerk—Trans-Europa Express
12. The Stranglers—IV – Rattus Norvegicus
13. Wire—Pink Flag
14. Randy Newman—Little Criminals
15. Pink Floyd—Animals

Songs:
1. Fleetwood Mac—The Chain
(*) Arvo Pärt—Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten
2. Bee Gees—How Deep Is Your Love
3. Brian Eno—By This River
4. Yvonne Elliman—If I Can’t Have You
5. Bob Welch—Ebony Eyes
6. Carpenters—Sweet, Sweet Smile
7. David Gates—Goodbye Girl
8. Player—Baby Come Back
9. David Bowie—“Heroes”
10. ABBA - Take a Chance On Me
11. Foreigner—Cold As Ice
12. Bee Gees—Night Fever
13. Television—Elevation
14. Dennis Wilson—Thoughts of You
15. Iggy Pop—China Girl

16. Crosby, Stills & Nash—Just a Song Before I Go
17. Glen Campbell—Southern Nights
18. Elvis Costello—Watching the Detectives
19. Rita Coolidge—We’re All Alone
20. Neil Young—Like a Hurricane
21. Goblin—Suspiria
22. Slim Ali & the Hodi Boys—Sweet Mother
23. Television—Marquee Moon
24. Bee Gees—Stayin’ Alive
25. Iggy Pop—The Passenger
26. Talking Heads—Psycho Killer
27. Sex Pistols—God Save the Queen
28. Richard Hell & the Voidoids—Blank Generation
29. David Bowie—Warszawa
30. The Adverts—One Chord Wonders
31. Randy Newman—Baltimore

Edited to include "Take a Chance On Me"
