1977 is apparently the year with the most songs on my iPod, for whatever that is worth. It's a great year, that's for sure.

1. Television - Marquee Moon
2. Earth, Wind & Fire - Fantasy
3. Billy Joel - Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
4. David Bowie - "Heroes"
5. AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
6. Supertramp - Fool's Overture
7. Iggy Pop - Lust for Life
8. The Mark & Clark Band - Worn Down Piano
9. X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage, Up Yours!
10. Zamfir - The Lonely Shepherd
11. John Williams - Star Wars: Main Theme
12. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Like a Hurricane
13. Dennis Wilson - River Song
14. Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
15. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Jammin'

As always, favorites have fallen by the wayside. These I feel the most sorry about:

Brian Eno - By This River (seems to have some big fans here)
Meat Loaf - Paradise By the Dashboard Light (Meat Loaf is rather unpopular though)
Television - Torn Curtain (sadly room for only one Marquee Moon track)
Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
Parliament - Flash Light
Queen - We Will Rock You

An so on. I should thank Stephan for including The Lonely Shepherd by Zamfir. I never knew the year of that track and would nog have considered it if not for his list.

After browsing through the songs lists, I've become aware that "Take a Chance On Me," my favorite ABBA song (which I had listed as 1978 for some reason), is actually 1977. I will edit my list momentarily...

Greg - I Fought the Law was released in 1979, so I moved everything else up one.

Also, Fred you had two #14s, so I pushed Iggy Pop down to 15. Tell me if that's not ok, and I'll change it!

In the last 1977 poll, Kraftwerk were at #18, but Talking Heads were at #4. The big winners this time are "How deep is your love" which received ZERO votes last time and "The Passenger" up from #23.

I find it interesting that "The Passanger" makes it on to the final poll while "Solsbury Hill" doesn't, because they are in the same bracket this week for bracketology and Gabriel is doing much better than Iggy. Funny how the different polls play out.

"The Passenger" got 2x#1 and 1x#3 votes and none of those voters has voted (yet) in bracketology.

Odd results in all. I am amazed that Fleetwood Mac did so well, and saddened that Talking Heads:77 didn't get in. Neither of Iggy Pop's albums get in, but both the Bowie ones do (with Low at #1!) But oh well! The excel file is attached, please tell me if I made any mistakes!

Both of these sadden me too. If I had had a songs list, I probably would have had Trans-Europa Express in my top 3, easily taking it into the top 15! Psycho Killer saddens me less though, as I think there are a number of songs on 77 that are better: "The Book I Read", "Don't Worry About The Government" among others.

It's a somewhat surprising list. I don't know about the last 70's poll, but I didn't see How Deep Is Your Love, The Chain, One Love/ People Get Ready, By This River and maybe even The Passenger (it even outperformed Lust for Life!) and Sound and Vision coming. To be honest, outside of Sound and Vision and By This River I don't consider any one of them personal favorites. Put these besides I Feel Love and God Save the Queen, two songs I find extremely overrated and you have in my eyes the weakest year list for songs up til now, but many would disagree, I guess. It's hard to argue with the top two though.

From last time (2009!!) these were the results:

1) Television - Marquee Moon
2) David Bowie - Low
3) Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
4) Sex Pistols, The - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols
5) Clash, The - The Clash
6) Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
7) Suicide - Suicide
8) Talking Heads - Talking Heads 77
9) David Bowie - Heroes
10) Wire - Pink Flag

Songs:

1) David Bowie - "Heroes"
2) Television - Marquee Moon
3) Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
4) Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
5) Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
6) Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
7) Sex Pistols, The - God Save the Queen
8) Donna Summer - I Feel Love
9) Elvis Costello - Alison
9-tie) Ramones - Sheena Is A Punkrocker

There seems to be a downward trend for Marquee Moon (both album and song) and Psycho Killer :(
But an upward trend for I Feel Love and Steely Dan :)

The album list isn't really that suprising if you compare it to the main list on AM: there are only two differences in their respective top 15's. The forum poll lacks Lust for Life and Rocket to Russia (though they came close) and replaced them with Before and After Science and Animals. Brian Eno is extremely popular in these polls, so him getting in is no surprise. I didn't see Animals coming however. It places 43 on the AM list of 1977.

The songs is another matter, since there are no less then 7 different songs ranked. The forum poll misses Psycho Killer, Sheena Is a Punk Rocker, Complete Control, Pretty Vacant, Blank Generation, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Watching the Detectives. Complete Control only got two top 15 votes. It's also notable that all these are punk or at least punk-like songs. Despite these differences this is also a rare year where every song is in the AM top 6000. Most deliver at least one bubbler or unranked song. By This River ranks by far the lowest, as the #100 of 1977.

It's surprising to me that 77 is so far down on the AM list too. But I suppose in almost any other year a #346 ranking would put you in the top 15 for that year. Anything except the stretch from 1968-1971.

I think Animals got a boost from BMAA.

I just realized I forgot to vote this month and Solsbury Hill & Psycho Killer were #8 & #10 respectively...

My albums list would not have changed anything other than Sex Pistols moving ahead of Kraftwerk and The Clash switching spots with Saturday Night Fever!!!

A healthy change, I think. As has been said, 1977 was a great year for many genres, not just punk.

I was not readily able to determine from the spreadsheet how the songs were ranked below 42. Please let us know if you plan to provide an updated spreadsheet to clarify these rankings.

It's all there! If you go to the "Songs Consol" tab, to the left of table of 42, you've got this great bit table with all the songs that were voted on and by whom.

For example, "Dreams" got 43 points including 10 points from Liveinphoenix etc etc. The way that the pivot table works means that some information, e.g. rank, and the artist of the song, becomes a bit hard to pull out, but all the raw information is there.

I am using an Apple computer and I see "Dreams" in row 47, column A. I do not see any mention of the performing artist or the total of 43 points. In row 47, column AJ, I see a total of 44 points. Perhaps you could provide the Rank, Artist and Song values in columns AL, AM and AN as has been done for the top 42 songs.

I've updated the file in my earlier post, so hopefully everything should be there!
