Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 7

Post by Listyguy »

For the first time in the tournament, we have two songs by the same artist appearing in the same week. We also have it twice in one week. The artists are LCD Soundsystem and Bob Dylan. One more thing: both Dylan songs are in the same bracket.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.

14. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
115. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)
142. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)

189. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
196. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)

91. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
166. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)

Lonely Boy
Empire State of Mind
Please Please Me
Let's Push Things Forward
Yeah the Keys are the clear winner here in my opinion...although "Empire State of Mind" has grown on me since when it first came out and I hated it due to overplaying (and being from NY). The Streets may the first band I've heard where the accent legitimately bothers me.

It's Alright Ma
Ballad of a Thin Man
Thirteen
I Can Change
WHYYYYY. Two of Dylan's best songs (and a damn good ballad from Big Star) all in the same bracket. This is plain unfair. If one of the Dylans doesn't win I may cry.

Hallelujah
Crystalised
Someone Great
Genesis
Can we get two "Hallelujah"s in the second round? The XX song is pretty good as well.

Apply Some Pressure
Pyramids
St. Louis Blues
The Wire
Not a really good group (especially with the second bracket), but "Apply Some Pressure" is a nice song. "Pyramids", while good, is yet another song that gets overhyped because it's a 9-minute long "epic", which the critics seem to dig these days.

5. Lonely Boy
9. Empire State of Mind
13. Please Please Me
14. Let's Push Things Forward

3. I Can Change
6. It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
8. Ballad of a Thin Man
11. Thirteen

2. Someone Great
4. Genesis
7. Crystalised
10. Hallelujah

1. Pyramids
12. The Wire
15. Apply Some Pressure
16. St. Louis Blues

That fourth bracket is such a landslide for me, especially with Pyramids in my all time top 5. Overall there are 5 songs this week in my top 250.

115. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)
14. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
243. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)
142. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
Pretty sure Lonely Boy is going to win this one in a landslide.
I don't care much for the 3 others, I think Please Please Me is that high more on the basis of "being the 1st hit of the greatest band in the world" than for its own merits because there are so many better Beatles songs, even in their early years (granted, most of them are actually ranked higher but still).
I've always been lost as to which of Original Pirate Material tracks are acclaimed : Let's Push Things Forward is okay, Weak Become Heroes is one of the weakest tracks of the album and It's Too Late is okay but forgettable... in the mean time the album boasts Turn the Page one of the greatest openers ever, the fun Don't Mug Yourself, the witty The Irony of It All and the great Has It Come to This and none of them are ranked !

68. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)
61. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
189. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
196. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
That's the only bracket where the future winner doesn't seem obvious (and might unfortunately not be my #1 vote).
Thirteen is for me the greatest love song ever written (except if you consider Waltz #2 a love song to one's mother), by keeping it from a childish points of view Big Star preserves all the purity and sincerity of love without any of the bloated over the top feeling that most adult love songs are doomed with.
Ballad of a Thin Man is one of my fav Dylan tracks... as I said the Beatles songs who made it to this bracketology are fairly weak, but the Dylan ones are top notch.
Close call for 3rd place, there are at least 5 tracks on This is Happening which should be ranked higher than I Can Change but I'm a big LCD Soundsystem fan so still works for me.

38. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
219. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
91. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
166. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)
Easy #1, a heart breaking masterpiece, and like Heartbeat a song Moonbeam will describe better than I could !
Close call for 2nd place, Grimes' music is in a category that stand basically no chance in this kind of game but I will still root for Oblivion if it isn't facing a very favorite of mine. Genesis is not as good and would lose to at least half of The XX's first album tracks, but not to Crystalised.
Hallelujah is unfortunately a glaring example of great songwriting back up with poor delivery, production and orchestration.

10. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
247. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)
138. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
119. Haim - The Wire (2013)
Another expected easy win, Pyramids is 5 minute of perfect electro-R&B followed by a great, though not as perfect, more laid back song. It's a shame that the video clip removes the best part of the song.
Apply Some Pressure was a huge blast back in 2005, making the release of the album 3 months later a huge disappointment. But the track still stands out and I'm glad it's getting some well deserved acclaim.
I didn't really understand Haim's acclaim last year, I find the album very lackluster, but the singles are quite good... Don't Save Me and Falling would have fared better though, I'll put Bessie Smith's messy but full of charm blues ahead.

This week features, perhaps, three top 50 all time songs for me.

4. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)
5. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
7. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)
15. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
The closest of calls on the top two, but "Lonely Boy" gets the edge because I've loved it for longer. I mean, something has to be the tie-breaker, right? I agree with those who say there are better tracks on Original Pirate Material than "Let's Push Things Forward." I still love the song, though. And as for "Please Please Me," all I can say is "eh."

3. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
6. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)
10. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
11. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
I'm of the mind that "I Can Change" is the best track on This Is Happening, though it doesn't run away with that distinction. "Dance Yrself Clean" and "Home" give it a serious run for its money. The Big Star track is fantastic but it didn't stand a chance here. And those are great Dylan tracks, but no where near my favorites from their respective albums.

2. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
8. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
13. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
14. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)
I struggled to decide which LCD Soundsystem song would get my number two of the week (but those numbers don't matter anyway). Again, though, "Someone Great" gets the edge due to precedence. Speaking of which, I think I might've liked Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" a lot more if I hadn't become so familiar with Jeff Buckley's version first. The xx track was excellent and the Grimes track pretty good.

1. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
9. Haim - The Wire (2013)
12. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)
16. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
So here we have my favorite track of the week. Not only that but it is easily a top 20 track all time for me, maybe even top ten. I can't help but dance every time I listen to that first 4:30, and I am not a dancing person. The second half of the song is also brilliant, though slightly less engaging. How unfair for the other songs in this bracket to compete against Frank Ocean.

I realize we're not dealing with "Like a Rolling Stone" here, but I'm shocked by the overall lack of love for some of these Dylan tracks. This goes back to last week as well. He was what, the forum's second favorite artist? And these songs are off some of his best albums.

14. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
115. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)
243. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)
142. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
Normally I would give the Black Keys the edge here because the song is catchy as hell (and wonderful for sing-a-long purposes 8-) ), but "Empire State of Mind" is one of the earliest songs I can distinctly remember listening to on the radio (yeah... I'm young), and unlike most of those songs, it gets better and better with each listen, I might even call it a classic in a few years time. After that, the Streets get an easy 3rd place with a rather good song, nothing special, but still relatively enjoyable. Finally, I know the Beatles had to start somewhere, but they had much much better straight forward pop tunes.

189. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
68. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)
196. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
61. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
Eugh... Expect me to swap "I Can Change" and "Thirteen" several times over before the week is through, it feels unfair that a love song this achingly beautiful is only second place, but I honestly prefer "I Can Change" ... Is there any chance I can take Dylan's last place point and give it to Big Star Listyguy  ?

38. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
91. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
219. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
166. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)
I feel like it will take a personal tragedy for me to truly truly get "Someone Great", but it still edges out a fantastically executed lesson in simplicity from the xx. Grimes has the general feel of a grower, while "Hallelujah" has been done to death by everyone and their mother, and Jeff Buckley's rendition severely outclasses Mr. Cohen.

119. Haim - The Wire (2013)
10. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
247. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)
138. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
It took me a while to warm up to "The Wire", but thank goodness I did, because this song is just a good time, plain and simple. Try as I might, "Pyramids" is simply one of those songs that I respect more than I love... That being said, I have a lot of respect for it, hence why it beats out two fantastic new discoveries courtesy of Maximo Park and Bessie Smith.

Overall, I would say this was a pretty fantastic week, even Dylan managed to pop out a really enjoyable song (the less I talk about "Ballad of a Thin Man", the better) :D

The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002) 8
The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011) 8
The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963) 7+
Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009) 7

Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965) 10

Big Star - Thirteen (1972) 8
LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010) 7

Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984) 7+

Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012) 10
Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925) 9
Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005) 8
Haim - The Wire (2013) 5

I’m beginning to wonder if I might not, on average, prefer the songs in this edition of Bracketology to the original (though, admittedly, I wasn’t here the first time around). I’m surprised that the lowest personal rating I’ve given any song so far is a 5, and I know there are several songs that made the first Bracketology that I’d have given considerably lower.

Please don't point out any similarity to the Eagles. Remember, they've already gone after an artist in the very same bracket for sampling "Hotel California." ;)

1. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind
2. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy
3. The Beatles - Please Please Me
4. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward

Many Beatles songs rank among my all time favorites. This is not one of them. I honestly want to put it below the Streets, but that accent... I'm too American for this.

1. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change
2. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man
3. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
4. Big Star - Thirteen

1. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
2. Grimes - Genesis
3. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
4. The xx - Crystalized

1. Haim - The Wire
2. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
3. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure
4. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues
Splish splash, I was raking in the cash

Don't understand the fuss about "lonely Boy".

68. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)
61. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
189. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
196. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
LCD Soundsystem have a habit of letting some of their songs run on a minute or two too long, they could have done better here otherwise.

38. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
219. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
166. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)
91. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
Best bracket of the week.

10. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
138. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
247. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)
119. Haim - The Wire (2011)
A walk over.

243. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)
14. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
142. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
115. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)

I forgot that I liked The Streets. Easy #1 here. I'm not a big fan of "Empire State of Mind," but prefer it to the Beatles track. I hate the Black Keys (not a big fan of blues-derived guitar playing) making them a lock for #4.

61. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
196. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
189. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
68. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)

Dylan takes the top two spots easily. I like LCD, but "I Can Change" is one of my least favorite songs by them (along with "Someone Great," which is in the next bracket...). Despite liking some Big Star songs, "Thirteen" has always creeped me out.

91. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
219. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
38. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
166. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)

I'm not big on any of the songs in this bracket. I like some of Jamie xx's production, but dislike most of the contributions made by his bandmates ("Intro" is my favorite xx song). Even so, I'll take it over the rest. I can handle Grimes in small doses, so I'm fine with "Genesis" at #2. Again, I do like LCD quite a lot, but I find "Someone Great" to be easily the most boring thing on an otherwise great album. Cohen's "Hallelujah" is considerably better than Buckley's interpretation of it, but I still think it's terrible.

138. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
10. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
119. Haim - The Wire (2013)
247. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)

I really like the top three here. I'm not always a big fan of old blues and jazz, however "St. Louis Blues" just clicks for me. I guess it's Bessie's voice. Close-call for second, but I find the production of "Pyramids" more interesting than "The Wire." Maximo Park is forgettable British indie rock.

6. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
8. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)
12. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
13. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)

I don't mind Empire State of Mind, I wouldn't be one bit upset if I never heard it again though.

7. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
10. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
11. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)
14. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)

2. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
3. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
4. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
16. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)

Love the top songs, sorry Leonard.

1. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
5. Haim - The Wire (2013)
9. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
15. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)

Pyramids is such a brilliant song, clear winner of the week.

I don't know why, but this made me laugh. Unfortunately these are the only two LCD songs in the tournament, so you won't see any you like this time around.

Lonely Boy is one of my favorites song in recent years. It won easily.

189. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
196. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
The worst bracket since the begining. Three songs I deeply dislike and one acceptable.

91. The xx - Crystalised (2009)

Haha I love how so many people can love a bracket and then one can hate it so thoroughly. That's what makes this place great.

1. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
2. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
3. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)
4. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)

A solid bracket top to bottom, although none of these are particular favorites of mine. The Beatles’ first great track takes the top spot more or less by default.

1. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
2. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
3. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)
4. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)

By contrast, this bracket is painful. How does a terrific LCD track become a very easy pick for #4? By having to compete with one of the most beautiful songs of the 1970s and two-count ‘em-two of the greatest songs from the greatest period of rock’s greatest songwriter. It’s SH2B2, 3, and 4 here, and “Ballad of a Thin Man” barely edges “It’s Alright Ma” largely because it’s a great band performance as well as an astonishing song.

1. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
2. The xx - Crystalised (2009)
3. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)
4. Grimes - Genesis (2012)

LCD fares better here, with the easiest #1 pick of the week for me – “Someone Great” is probably my favorite song of the 2000s and one of my favorites of all time. The xx are a close-but-not-really second; as much as I love Cohen and “Hallelujah,” I’m not a huge fan of the overproduced original.

1. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
2. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)
3. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)
4. Haim - The Wire (2013)

“Someone Great” was an easy #1 because of how much I love it; although I love “Pyramids” too, the reason it’s just as easy a #1 pick is because of how relatively uninspired I am by the rest. That said, “Apply Some Pressure” is probably the happiest surprise (re)discovery for me so far – I forgot how good it is.

4. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (2011)
9. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (2009)
13. The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
14. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (2002)

This one is very easy to rank, as they fall in four different groups of quality: brilliant > The Black Keys, great > Jay-Z, Good > The Beatles, okay > The Streets. I should add that I prefer Alicia Keys' solo version over the one of Jay-Z (and when I was in New York for a couple of months last year it was the one I kept hearing, too) and that in contrary to most people here I actually think the accent on Let's Push Things Forward is the most charming thing on it.

1. Bob Dylan - It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (1965)
2. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (1965)
12. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (2010)
15. Big Star - Thirteen (1972)

It's Alright, Ma isn't doing particularly well here and that surprises me. I guess I just projected my own taste on everyone here when I thought that song would walk over the competition like it's nothing. If Like a Rolling Stone is the Dylan masterpiece in which his singing and music finds his greatest form, than It's Alright, Ma is his masterpiece of lyrics, together with Desolation Row. I guess that perhaps the all too simple (though effective) guitar playing might keep people from voting for it, but if there is one song in which the lyrics and the rhymes are so good that they become as musical as a full orchestra it's this song. Not only is it rich with wonderful rhymes and great one-liners (and if my thought-dreams could be seen/ they'd probably put my head in a guillotine), but in the best parts he combines these strengths to create haunting visions like no one else I've come across in music. For example:

"You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks they really found you"

The only competition that Dylan gets here is from himself, because Ballad of a Thin Man is amazing too. I like LCD Soundsystem and I Can Change is fine, but not one of their best. Big Star has yet to make any kind of impression on me and Thirteen doesn't get the job done.

3. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (1984)
5. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)
10. Grimes - Genesis (2012)
11. The xx - Crystalised (2009)

Hallelujah in it's original version seems much derided here, but although Buckley is the definitive one, I still love Cohen's more grandiose take on it. What sets him apart from any other version I heard is that he seems to see some humor in it, as well as some resignation. Someone Great is LCD on form and is one of my favorites of theirs. I hate voting Genesis third place, because it starts so wonderfully. The first minute or so promises an honest to goodness epic, but than it finds another flow and stays there. That's more than okay, but I expect more each time the song starts. I love The xx album, but more because of the way those songs flow in and out of each other, sustaining a specific mood. Taken apart, the songs work far less impressively.

6. Haim - The Wire (2013)
7. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)
8. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (2012)
16. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925)

Last year I didn't get the hype for Haim, but listening to The Wire again this week for a few spins it finally clicked. It's great pop, wonderfully done. I was going to give Pyramids second place, but in the end it lost out to the fun of Maximo Park. Sure, that one doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but it is great rock. Pyramids is a song I greatly admire, but somehow I don't love. The ambition is much appreciated however and it sets a great mood. It even finds a way to make John Mayer not sound boring! St. Louis Blues is from a genre I don't have any feeling with. Maybe I'll get it in due time.

Excellent description of "It's Alright, Ma". Really the only other Dylan song I consider to be on the same lyrical level as "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall". So many excellent lines come out of that song:
"Money doesn't talk it swears"
"Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked"
"Don't hate nothing at all expect hatred"
I could go on all day. This song is one of the (many) reasons "Bringing It All Back Home" is my favorite Dylan album.

The Black Keys - Lonely Boy: 8
The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward: 5.5
Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind: 4
The Beatles - Please Please Me: 3

Very easy win for The Black Keys here, as there was no real competition to speak of in my book. Rip-roaring fun. I've never gotten the buzz about The Streets, but then again, I've never gotten the buzz about Jay-Z either (with the exception of "Dirt Off Your Shoulder"). His style is a bit annoying, and Alicia Off Keys does nothing to help matters. The Beatles are unsurprisingly last for me, but I didn't loathe "Please Please Me" as much as I tend to with the Fabs.

LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change: 10
Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man: 7
Big Star - Thirteen: 5.5
Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding): 1.5

Very easy picks in this bracket. "I Can Change" is a wonderful display of nigh-pathetic emotional pleading, and with a synthesized backdrop that isn't too dissimilar to "Love Is a Stranger", it's an easy win for me. Last week, "Blind Willie McTell" served as a reminder of why I don't totally diss Bob Dylan, but "Ballad of a Thin Man" is second in line for that claim. It's the clear highlight of the otherwise fairly moribund Highway 61 Revisted for me. "It's Alright Ma" is much more akin to my usual feelings about Dylan's music. I've never understood the fuss over Big Star. Perhaps one day I'll get it.

LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great: 10
The xx - Crystalised: 9.5
Grimes - Genesis: 8
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah: 7

Awesome, awesome bracket! LCD takes the cake once again with one of the most poignant sounds about death I've ever heard. The synths sound like repetitive, droning shocks to the brain that attempting to balance the world's reality with such personal grief can bring, and the lyrics are just unbelievable. "Crystalised" is easily my favorite song by The xx, capturing their eerie, stark, rhythmic minimalism better than any other. Grimes is all about "Oblivion" for me, but "Genesis" is a close second. It's a shame to put Leonard Cohen last here - his version of "Hallelujah" (which I had not heard before) easily outclasses Jeff Buckley's.

Frank Ocean - Pyramids: 7
Haim - The Wire: 6
Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues: 6
Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure: 4

The first 5+ minutes of "Pyramids" are really good, but it loses steam thereafter for me. Still, that's enough to win here. "The Wire" threatens to make me like it but ultimately is dragged back to average. "St. Louis Blues" is an interesting piece, but I struggle to connect with it. "Apply Some Pressure" is musically interesting with the many changes, but that is why I can elevate its rating to a 4 - the singing is abhorrent to my ears.

Yes, it's easy to keep quoting those lines, but what makes the song even greater is that every one-liner also finds a place in the bigger whole of the song. It's no mere stream of consciousness like Subterranean Homesick Blues (which I love to, by the way).
Bringing It All Back Home is also my favorite Dylan album and my favorite album period.

Surprised and disappointed by the negative votes and comments of "Let's Push Things Forward". It's got possibly the best use of trumpet on this side of The Specials, and there's Skinners' vocal delivery and lovely British accent. With also a great bassline and organ chord you've got one of the best songs of this millennium.

1. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy (85, 14)
2. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind (70, 4)
3. The Beatles - Please Please Me (67, 6)
4. The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward (58, 4)
Early in the week it looked like the Keys would completely annihilate everyone, but they ended up “only” winning by 15 points. In the next round they get “Do I Wanna Know?” and a two more in the upcoming weeks.

1. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (82, 9)
2. Big Star - Thirteen (74, 8)
3. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (62, 7)
4. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (62, 4)
For most of the week, this one was really close. Only in the past two days did Dylan overtake “Thirteen” and “I Can Change” and then build a lead. In the next round the song will see “Hallelujah” and “Video Games”.

1. LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (90, 17)
2. The xx - Crystalised (75, 6)
3. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (55, 4)
4. Grimes - Genesis (50, 0)
Well, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a song get 90 points, so this one was obviously a blowout. Also of note, we have our first song to not get ANY first place votes. “Someone Great” will get a crack at “Reflektor” and “White Winter Hymnal” next round.

1. Frank Ocean - Pyramids (96, 17)
2. Haim - The Wire (65, 5)
3. Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (63, 3)
4. Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure (56, 3)
Like I said before, 90 points has been a rarity lately, so it goes without say there were some impressive performances this week. In the next round Ocean will see “Glory Box” and “Bloodbuzz Ohio”.

I honestly can't say I'm surprised. Does anyone NOT prefer the other Grimes song in the game?

She would have won the first bracket and the last for me - just a tough draw.
