Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
Welcome to the first voting session for Acclaimed Music Madness. We get things started with the first round for the left side of the bracket (the London and Lagos regions). This poll will close around 11pm EST (4am GMT) Wednesday night (Thursday morning for GMT).
For each matchup, indicate which artist you prefer and then assign that artist a score between one and three using the following scale:
1 - you feel the same about both artists, but have a slight preference for one or the other (e.g., you like both artists but prefer artist A over artist B).
2 - you clearly prefer one artist over the other, but not by a vast margin (e.g., you like one artist and are indifferent to the other).
3 - you like/love one artist and dislike/hate the other.
Please have at least a passing familiarity (i.e., listen to a couple of their songs) with each artist. To accommodate this, I have prepared three-song playlists for each artist which can be accessed via the link at the bottom of the post.

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
Here are my picks for this round:
London Region
1) The Beatles - 1
16) Sol Hoopii
I would love to go with Hoopii here since I'm not really that into either and I would hate to see the poor guy end up with 0 votes, but ultimately I will find myself listening to The Beatles more often. Interesting discovery though.
8) U2 - 2
9) Jimi Hendrix
Hendrix has never been something I was too keen on (nice way of saying his guitar solos make me cringe). I mean, I don't even like U2! And yet, here we are.
5) Kraftwerk - 2
12) Sly and the Family Stone
I love me some Kraftwerk. Sly I am okay with but nothing more.
4) Bruce Springsteen
13) De La Soul - 1
Close, but De La has a slight edge.
6) Duke Ellington - 1
11) Hank Williams
Tough match between titans of American Music. Old-school jazz edges out old-school country for me.
3) Madonna
14) Missy Elliott - 1
This one too, but I might be the biggest Missy Elliott fan on the forum so. . .
7) Jay-Z
10) Serge Gainsbourg - 1
I hate voting against a hip hop artist, but I prefer Serge.
2) Miles Davis - 1
15) Laurie Anderson
Apologies to Laurie, but I must go with Miles here.
Lagos Region
1) Prince - 1
16) Henry Mancini
Mancini has done some lovely scores, but the top-seed advances for me.
8) Daft Punk
9) Aretha Franklin - 1
Close, but Aretha's the Queen for a reason.
5) Frank Sinatra - 2
12) Charles Mingus
Mingus and I never really clicked. As for Sinatra, I actually prefer his daughter, but the old man has some tunes as well.
4) Beastie Boys - 2
13) The Temptations
The Temptations have some good songs, but I've never investigated their albums that much giving the Beastie Boys a decisive edge in the quantity of quality songs department.
6) Massive Attack
11) Velvet Underground - 1
This counts as an upset by seeding, but I would be shocked if the VU didn't make a deep run in this tournament. I'm starting them off here, even though Blue Lines is a personal favorite.
3) Public Enemy
14) Fela Kuti - 2
Here's the thing: I like Public Enemy, but everytime I hear their music I seem to like them a little less. I think it's the production, it sounds so stilted to my ears. Fela is one of my all-time favorite musicians and one I enjoy roughly the same each time I listen to him. Once again, I am forced to vote against hip hop .
7) Neil Young
10) Elvis Presley - 3
Here's a fun fact about me I seldom mention in polite company: I HATE Neil Young's music. He seems like a nice guy though.
2) Led Zeppelin - 2
15) Buena Vista Social Club
I'm not a big Led Zeppelin fan. But there's something about the omnipresence of Buena Vista Social Club that irks me even more than guitar solos. Besides, I actually enjoy a few Zeppelin songs on rare occasions.

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
I would've loved to go -3 for Elvis, since he's my favorite artist and I have a feeling he's going to need all the help he can get, but I followed the rules of the game. There are no artists I can say I dislike; the closest call was Madonna vs. Missy, since I love Madonna and Missy has a couple of my worst songs of the 00s - but I still couldn't quite go there.
Thank you, too, for providing the sample playlists. The only one I needed to rely on this week was Sol Hoopii, since I was only familiar with "Hula Girl." I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out. It's certainly a very unique, unconventional bracket, which is great!

So, I’ve been ranking the qualifying 70’s albums (up to 78). All three Kraftwerk albums are in the bottom 10, with one dead last. I like rather than love Sly so the wipe-out is avoided, but Kraftwerk are so dreary they deserve it really.
4) Bruce Springsteen 1
13) De La Soul
6) Duke Ellington 1

Really difficult, I like Mezzanine better than any VU albums, but VU have more variety and originality through those first 4 albums.

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
Congratulations Jeff for the game. I like the idea of selecting the most acclaimed musicians of the main styles and parts of the world. And I love the playlists, both the selections and the layout in this wordpress.com page. Sadly I got no time right now to surf on these playlists but I'll surely do it.
Some comments about my votes:
- I purposely haven't read other people choices in order to avoid the strategic voting.
- I'm not going to include any 3 because of the "dislike/hate factor." I mean I got an "extreme preference" for The Beatles over Sol Hoopii but by no means I hate poor Sol.
London Region
The Beatles 2 (vs. Sol Hoopii)
Jimi Hendrix 2 (vs. U2)
Kraftwerk 1 (vs. Sly and the Family Stone)
Bruce Springsteen 2 (vs. De La Soul)
Duke Ellington 1 (vs. Hank Williams)
Madonna 1 (vs. Missy Elliott)
Serge Gainsbourg 2 (vs. Jay-Z)
Miles Davis 2 (vs. Laurie Anderson)
Lagos Region
Prince 2 (vs. Henry Mancini)
Daft Punk 1 (vs. Aretha Franklin)
Frank Sinatra 2 (vs. Charles Mingus)
The Temptations 2 (vs. Beastie Boys)
Velvet Underground 1 (vs. Massive Attack)
Fela Kuti 1 (vs. Public Enemy)
Elvis Presley 1 (vs. Neil Young)
Led Zeppelin 1 (vs. Buena Vista Social Club)

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
1) The Beatles (2)
16) Sol Hoopii
Sol Hoopii is unfortunately a one-trick pony, but as Paul Simon says, he turns that trick so well.
8) U2 (1)
9) Jimi Hendrix
Closest of close calls.
5) Kraftwerk (1)
12) Sly and the Family Stone
Is there a couldn't care less ranking?
4) Bruce Springsteen (2)
13) De La Soul
6) Duke Ellington (3)
11) Hank Williams
I was married for far too long to a woman who liked both kinds of music: Country AND Western.
3) Madonna (1)
14) Missy Elliott
See Kraftwerk/Sly. Madonna keeps falling in my estimation with each passing year.
7) Jay-Z
10) Serge Gainsbourg (3)
Romain has converted me. Gainsbourg is God.
2) Miles Davis (1)
15) Laurie Anderson
Wish I could love Laurie more, but it would take bigger guns to dethrone Miles.
Lagos Region
1) Prince
16) Henry Mancini
Pass. Dead Heat. Call me if there's a tiebreaker; or shoot me.
8) Daft Punk
9) Aretha Franklin (2)
Long live The Queen.
5) Frank Sinatra (1)
12) Charles Mingus
Mingus is #2 in this whole region. But he's up against number one.
4) Beastie Boys (1)
13) The Temptations
No, this is not an anti-Voldemort vote.
6) Massive Attack (1)
11) Velvet Underground
This whole group is painful, but none more painful than this. Lou, Be Thankful For What You Got.
3) Public Enemy
14) Fela Kuti (1)
Public Enemy are brilliant at what they do, as is Fela Kuti. Unfortunately, what they do is Gangsta Rap.
7) Neil Young (3)
10) Elvis Presley
Shaking hips vs. just plain Shakey. I'll take the whole package.
2) Led Zeppelin (1)
15) Buena Vista Social Club
If Buena Vista's discography was one studio record longer, it might go the other way.

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
I have learned to live with people who don't like Kraftwerk. I still felt the urge to attack DaveC, but I could restrain myself.
But neither care about Kraftwerk or Sly - I mean (with just a slight exaggeration) they cover up everything that's great about music!

I feel far more guilty about voting against Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson in one post.Henrik wrote:I have learned to live with people who don't like Kraftwerk. I still felt the urge to attack DaveC, but I could restrain myself.

Re: Acclaimed Music Madness: Round 1A
A quick reminder: voting for this round ends in just over 24 hours from now so do not delay in voting if you are intending to do. About 1/4 of the matchups are either tied or within one point of each other so that a single vote could change the outcome. The outcome of about a 1/4 more could be altered by a mere two sets of votes.

I admit I'd never heard of Sol Hoopii before, but the provided playlists don't invite much further inspection I'm afraid.

4) Bruce Springsteen 2

I'd love to send Madonna home by giving her opponent a 3, but Missy Elliott isn't exactly dominating my personal playlists either.
7) Jay-Z 2
10) Serge Gainsbourg
If there is one genre I simply don't get it's the French chanson.
2) Miles Davis 2
15) Laurie Anderson
Laurie Anderson was another artist I'd never heard anything of, but damn! That sounded great! I like ol' Miles, but Anderson immediately went to the front lines to become a favorite. Looking forward to further listening.
