Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2014: Nomination Thread

Post by Jirin »

This is the nomination thread for the Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2014 thread. Each user is allowed one nomination, and any album released in 2014 is eligible as long as it is not in either the Mega-Critic top 50, or the AM Mega-Critic top 50 from the Albums of 2014 thread. Also if an album was just released but it obviously going to be in the next Mega-Critic update, it should not be nominated.

Nominations will last until December 1st, then voters will have a full month to listen to as many of the nominated albums as possible, then rank all the ones that they listened to.

The album that wins the poll will be automatically entered into the next installment of Best Moderately Acclaimed Album.

My nomination is: Somi - The Lagos Music Salon.

Later on today I'll post a list of all ineligible albums for convenience.

Hi Jirin,

Shouldn't we wait for an updated AM Mega critic ? The last one was 5 months ago meaning many albums that would easily be top 50 (Run the Jewels 2, Caribou, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus, Spoon, FKA Twigs...) are not included and at least a dozen album would be kicked out of the top 50 and become eligible.

That is a good point, but I want to make sure everybody has a lot of time to listen to the albums and I'm not in control of when the AM Megacritic gets updated.

I had like four or five albums I knew would be eligible. It was a very hard choice. I nominate...

My Glorious-Hold on What we can Hold

But here's a few that just barely missed the cut.
---
Dan Bern-Songs of Fall
Disparition-Granicha
KONGOS-Lunatic
Paolo Nutini-Caustic Love
Vance Joy-Dream your Life Away

But again, MY GLORIOUS IS MY NOMINATION. COUNT THAT ONE

Since the AM Mega-critic list is a few months old let's just not use it and instead say, if the album is already popular on the board, don't nominate it. Use your best judgment. :)

A divisive choice, but it'll now be obvious which side I'm on:
Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

Thanks!

Hmmm... If *Do It Again* by Röyksopp & Robyn is eligible (I'm not sure what your stance is on EP's Jirin), than I would like to make that my nomination.

If that is not the case, than *Loom* by Fear of Men will suffice :D

I was hesitant to try nominating "Do To the Beast" by The Afghan Whigs, since Nassim, Whuntva and myself have already expressed our enjoyment of the album. But since (as DocBrown pointed out) we only have about half the nominations of last year, I'll throw it out there as a possibility. It's likely to be a polarizing album (and currently ranked 79th on Otisredding's Megacritic chart), so I don't think it would be at a competitive advantage, but I'll certainly respect your decision either way...

EPs are fine with me so long as they stand on their own.

For Do To The Beast, it's tricky because a lot of people are raving about it in the 2014 Albums thread. A few people have already listed it as one of their favorites of the year.

I'm not going to exercise veto power on this, so I'll leave it to whether you think that it's something the majority of the board can discover.

It is a tough call because I've also seen the support in the albums thread. But I have also noticed that it's not listed at all on many of the AMF members' lists who have listed all of the albums they've heard this year. For now, I will tentatively leave it as my nomination, but will have no problem withdrawing it if anyone has an objection.

I will nominate Ought - More Than Any Other Day

The alternative would be The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace is There but I doubt that would be to much people's taste.

Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit

I don't think this album has been super popular on the board so I'm going to assume it's eligible.
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...
