AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
There are only 2 weeks left until Christmas! I thought it would be fun to do a survey of our top favourite Christmas songs (or seasonal, holiday, winter, etc.)
Please send me a private message with a ranked list of your favourite songs that would fit in this category (min. 25 songs per list, max. 100)
Since there are many songs that have been recorded by hundreds of different artists, please indicate the recording artist for each of your entries.
The deadline for submissions is December 22. The results will be posted on Dec. 23.
I know this doesn't give a whole lot of time to come up with your lists, but what better time to think of it than during the weeks leading up to Christmas?

Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
I really like this idea, but I don't know if I can think of 25 Christmas songs I love, let alone tolerate. Maybe we could get a better turnout if the list lengths could be shorter?
Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
I was able to get fifty I genuinely liked. And they were all distinct.
If I can do it, so can you!

Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
Most of my favorite Christmas songs are by Weird Al, South Park, or they're older more religious ones. Most have too much schmaltz factor for me to handle.

One of my favorite Christmas singles (there aren't many) is The White Stripes "Candy Cane Children" which features on the b-side an interrupted Meg White singing Silent Night.

Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
What about "Brick" by Ben Folds Five. Nothing screams holidays to me like pawning a few unwanted gifts to help pay for the girlfriend's ... okay, maybe not.
Here's a take on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that I like. It seems to avoid the "Paean to Date Rape" vibe in part because this is an actual couple and have that real chemistry, and in part because they're both just cute as buttons.

Also, totally forgot "Carol of the Bells". That's a great song by basically anyone.

I included "Linus & Lucy" on my list, and Billboard magazine counts it on their Holiday charts as well.sonofsamiam wrote:Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Is Coming (not sure Linus and Lucy counts, it came out before the Christmas special, though of course it is great)

Excellent recommendations by everyone. Brings back a lot of good memories...
I would also like to add "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" by Ryuichi Sakamoto and "Carol of the Bells" by George Winston as possibilities. (Though Listyguy's definitely right about "Carol of the Bells": if there's a bad version, I've never heard it!)

Great picks, Charlie! Thanks for the Joni Mitchell, John Cale, and De La Soul reminders, those would have been a disaster to forget.
Also, you reminded me of Saint Etienne - I Was Born on Christmas Day

And now even more songs:
The Beach Boys (for instance) - I'll Be Home for Christmas
Bing Crosby - It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Amy Grant - Emmanuel
The Moody Blues - In the Bleak Midwinter
The New Christy Minstrels - We Need a Little Christmas
Elvis Presley - If Every Day Was Like Christmas
Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas - We Three Kings
Oddly enough, I have not included perhaps my favorite Christmas song, "Silent Night," because I feel like it belongs to everyone and to no one in particular.

Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
For those of you who are interested, I plan on using the same formula Zorg used for the Best Albums and Songs of the '70s poll:
100*(1+30)/(position+30)
100*(1+30)/(position+30)
Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
Apparently you've never heard "Ding! Fries Are Done" by "Billy," a (mercifully) brief parody of the "Carol" that Dr. Demento used to play a lot at Christmastime. It's sung, with maximum political incorrectness, in the voice of an apparently mentally challenged Burger King worker, and it got a lot more exposure when Peter Griffin sang it in a Family Guy cutaway.jamieW wrote:(Though Listyguy's definitely right about "Carol of the Bells": if there's a bad version, I've never heard it!)
Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
For a bit more genre variety, here's two hip hop Christmas songs:
"Christmas in Harlem" by Kanye West ft. Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Vado, Cyhi Da Prynce, Pusha-T, Musiq Soulchild, Teyana Taylor, and Big Sean

Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs
Upon analysis of the results so far, I think I am going to use the following formula:
100*(1+50)/(position+50)
(instead of 100*(1+30)/(position+30))
This wouldn't alter the order of the top ten any, but it would give an advantage to songs that appear on multiple lists versus songs that have a high ranking on only 1 ballot.
