DaveC wrote:Regarding classical music, let's undertake a thought experiment.

Imagine that 6 rabid Beethoven fans join the forum.

3) To be fair to everyone, we say that B-fans can vote for works based upon premiere date. This would be uncomplicated as classical works are usually dated this way. B-fans would see their favourites top the polls during the 1800's poll, and would vote for other music during the 1960's & 1970's. Everyone is reasonably happy.

...

Just vote for the best version you have heard. In my experience, different recordings of classical works don't really effect how I compare them with other music, as interpretations are subtle and always(?) solidly based upon the original score.
Just wanted to say that I think this is the fairest solution for classical works, too. Websites like Acclaimed Music, AllMusic, Rate Your Music and Discogs date non-classical music based on release dates of recordings. Beyond these sites, classical works are almost invariably dated based on premiere dates. To my mind, it makes sense that, for the purposes of our polls, we also date classical works in relation to premiere dates and non-classical music in relation to release dates of recordings.

During the 70s and 80s polls, I noticed that Henry and one or two others voted for recordings of classical works composed by earlier masters like Mozart and Beethoven. Under the new rule, Henry and others won't be able to vote for those recordings anymore (they had little chance of progressing anyway). But that doesn't mean that people can't tell us what their favourite classical recordings of a specific year was, or where those recordings would have placed on their lists had they been allowed to vote for them.

Conversely, recordings of modern classical works that made it through to the final rounds in previous polls won't be eligible anymore. If I remember correctly, recordings of works/pieces by Arvo Pärt progressed to the final rounds of the 80s or 90s polls. We would now, for example, have to vote for Tabula Rasa and Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten in a 1977 poll - the year both premiered.

But these are probably small sacrifices so that people who want to vote for classical works could have their cake but not eat it.

I appreciate the method described by Dan for dating classical works and can see that it could work out reasonably well. But given that there were no recordings available for some time after many these works premiered, we should consider that the proposed method appears to be a substantial departure from how other recordings are treated in the forum. Also given the tremendous advances in recording technology, it would be very difficult for me to rate the classical composition based on the first recording of the composition.

Thanks Henry. Ultimately, I agree with a comment by DaveC that we should have our favourite recording of a classical work in mind when we vote for it. Forget about the first recording of the work, and forget about interpretations of the work that don't appeal to you. Just listen to / think about your favourite recording of that work and place it where you think it deserves to be placed. That's the way I'm personally approaching it.

So much for choosing to host an "easy decade" like the 60's. :D Enjoy your long weekend. To quote the wise words of an ex-forumer: "This is just a fucking poll."

Wouldn't this make sure that classical music will be excluded from the final list, because everyone votes for it in another way? It seems every approach for this problem is flawed, but I think a consistent method is needed if any classical piece will be able to get in. So either year of premier or a specific recording and not a vague mix of both.

OK, it looks like I didn't make my point clearly. I'm all for using the year of premiere to date classical works. One person's favourite recording of a specific work would likely be different to another person's favourite recording of that work. What I meant to say was that it doesn't matter which recording of a work you have in mind when you vote for it, or which year your favourite recording was released, but that you should vote for the work in the year it premiered and forget about release dates of recordings. Hope this makes more sense.

DaveC wrote:"Black is the colour of my true love's hair" is a special case, because we haven't just had a 1959 poll, and so I can't prevent people from voting for it twice - and maybe some voters here will vote for it again in a 50's poll. However, so far as I know, only a live version was released in 1959 and that differs from the studio version released in 1960. I think this is why AM lists the song in 1960. As the song is listed on AM as 1960, I feel that it would be most unreasonable to reject it.
It's actually a mistake that it's listed as 1960. I added the song to my list here because you said it would be eligible and I didn't want to argue about it, but I honestly don't think it should be eligible.
Mea Culpa. I got this wrong. I thought that the B-side of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was a studio recording. After more research, I have this information:

"Black is the colour of my true love's hair" was recorded live (by Nina Simone) in 1955, 1956, and 1959. The first two recordings have appeared on more recent archival compilations, but the 1959 version was the first released in 1959 on "At Town Hall" and appeared again as the B-side of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" in 1960. The first studio recording was in 1964 and that first appeared on "Wild Is The Wind" in 1966.

"Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was recorded in the studio during 1959, but "Black is the colour of my true love's hair" wasn't recorded on that occasion.

As it things stand, this song is well out of contention as this stage. Unless anyone has an objection, I will take this off the lists and move everyone's subsequent positions up by one. Only Antonius hasn't given me a position 16 to move into position 15.

My songs #8 and #9 for 1960 would have been Nina Simone's "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" and Miriam Makeba's "The Click Song" (and I would have Miriam Makeba's first album on my Top 10). As I told on the recommendation thread probably "Miriam Makeba" was released in 1960 (but RYM date it as released in 1961) and "The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba" was released in 1962 (but RYM date it as released in 1960). So finally I'm going to include both "Miriam Makeba" and "The Click Song" in my 1961 list.

Whether or not the early sixties are terrible is up for debate, but if I had to judge 1960 on it's AM official song playlist I would have probably called it one of the worst years ever. It's not that most songs there are terrible on themselves, but as a whole they combine into something tedious. Not only had rock mostly died, outside of some interesting instrumentals, but there seemed to have been a move towards schmaltz. There is a sheen to the endless parade of sentimental ballads that I found hard to swallow going through the whole thing. Some of them are good and make my list, but the correlation between the top of 1960 AM and my list is mostly in the outsiders, bar Etta James, Elvis Presley and Sam Cooke.

"Luckily", the AM list is not the whole story and it also mostly reflects American pop. With the recommendation thread I discovered more and the year is deeper than it seems. That is wasn't a particular good year for American pop and rock doesn't mean other countries or styles where laying back. I wished I could have delved deeper, but there is only so much listening I could do in a month, so my list doesn't completely reflect what I wrote here. However, I love all these 15 songs, of course.

I'll keep this open for another 24 hours to give last minute voters a little leeway. Still plenty of opportunity to influence results. A pleasing turnout for pre-65.

I said midnight on 1st March - so make that 48 hours.

These are 1959. The Barrett Strong and the Jimmy Reed were both released on singles in late 1959. The Darin single was 1960 but the song was already on his "That's All" album which was released pretty early in 1959

31. Barrett Strong – Money (That’s What I Want)
35. Jimmy Reed – Baby What You Want Me To Do
68. Bobby Darin – Beyond the Sea
These are 1959. The Barrett Strong and the Jimmy Reed were both released on singles in late 1959. The Darin single was 1960 but the song was already on his "That's All" album which was released pretty early in 1959
I was wondering why nobody was voting for them. (I actually caught a couple of others myself before I submitted the list for exactly the same reason.) Fixed!

Yes, it's March but each year has its own thread. This one is for 1960 only. The 1960 poll will close tonight.
You have to wait for the 1961 thread to open.
