I already posted about this to the error thread, but Joao Gilberto's album of 1960 I think should be called O amor, o sorriso e a flor, because that's the original version. The other issues, released in 1961, are called Brazil's Brilliant; and Gilberto and Jobim.

Edit: Well Gilberto & Jobim might have been released in 1960 actually, but RYM cites O amor, o sorriso e a flor as the original version.

https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/joao_gilberto

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... _e_a_flor/

The most important point being that these three titles are all the same album.

We have "I'm into Something Good" to come before this 1965 release. (I can't guarantee to pick up every mistake, but this stood out.)

No problem. It was recorded in 1960; I will include it.

Most other folks will consider voting for it in 1961. Your votes will be added to theirs to give it a chance of going through as a wild-card. However, if you remove it from your 1960 list and vote for it next month instead, there is a chance that it will make the cut as one of the top 10 albums from 1961. Just saying..

DaveC, thank you for moderating this poll.

Two questions regarding songs of 1960/1961 I want to ask you and Henrik:
1) "I Just Want To Make Love To You" by Etta James is listed as 1961 in AM, according to RYM it is a track on the 1960 album "At Last!" (https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... es/at_last_/).
Is it 1960 or 1961?
2) With Howlin' Wolf it is the other way around: According to RYM, both tracks "Wang-Dang-Doodle" and "Back Door Man" are on a 1961 single (https://rateyourmusic.com/release/singl ... _door_man/), but in AM both songs are listed as 1960.
Is it 1960 or 1961?

I'm probably missing some information here, but could you clarify these two situations? Thanks!

I'm probably missing some information here, but could you clarify these two situations? Thanks!
1) All sources say that "I Just Want To Make Love To You" was first released on the original version of "At Last!". Sources disagree about the release date of "At Last!" (60/61) - probably the usual problem of varying release dates in different countries. I will have "At Last!" on my 1960 list, and several people have already voted that way for the album and the title track (which was released as a single later), so I suggest you treat it as 1960.

2) Tricky. "Wang-Dang-Doodle" and "Back Door Man" were recorded in 1960 at the same session as "Spoonful" (the song I'm going to vote for). All the sources I can find say that the "Wang-Dang-Doodle"/"Back Door Man" single was released in 1961 or 1962! Any votes from the 60/61/62 lists will accumulate to give these songs a chance of progressing as wild-card selections, so it's your call when you vote for them.

Charles Mingus - Mingus at Antibes

Is this album eligible for 1960? Apparently recorded in 1960, but released in 1976 per RYM. AM lists it at #12 for 1960.

Same decision on Bernard Herrmann's "Psycho", which wasn't released on LP until 1975?

I think I will duck and let that one fly past. I guess it is fair if you vote for what you hear when watching the film (otherwise there is the 1997 album to consider too....)

I don't want to be cruel, but I think Nina Simone's Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair is first released in 1959.
The track is on the '59 live album Nina Simone at Town Hall.

But since the track was first released on single in 1960, I guess it's still eligible?

Good point, but I'm not going to be pedantic, particularly as it is on AM as 1960. In fact it is on my list...

Right now I would only be able to vote for two albums here and don't really have time to do extensive research, so I may bow out until we get to 1965.

Seconded. I love the 60's, but the early 60's are NOT my specialty.

In the absence of an Albums list, a Songs list would still be very welcome.

It seems that sonofsamiam is voting for this work as a whole instead of one of its five movements. I personally view the work as an LP/EP and each of its movements as songs. I guess I'm asking for two reasons: 1. If I'm voting for only the second movement, it will be very high on my songs list, but if I'm voting for the entire work it will be lower. 2. If the "song" makes it through to the final round (stranger things have happened), then the participants will need to know if they're meant to vote for the whole work or one of its movements.

Are works eligible (as opposed to recordings)?

I didn't even think about that... probably because of having sat through numerous classical concerts where the date in the program notes refers to either the year of the work's first performance or the year the composer finished composing it. Don't know what DaveC has to say on the matter, but if we decide that works are ineligible now, then I suppose we would also have to exclude them in next year's 1900-1959 poll, and it would be a shame to leave out so many excellent classical works and pieces from that period.

I hadn't thought about this before. Two points.

- When we classify songs by year, we don't ask when was the song written or when was it first performed: We ask when was the first studio recording. Many songs that we classify by year were actually performed live in earlier years.
- In the recent all-time album poll, most(all?) of us who voted for classical works referenced specific recordings.

Given these reasonable precedents, and also that (as far as I know) there is no recording of Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8 from 1960, I am inclined to exclude it. That doesn't prevent voting for specific recordings from the 1900-1959 period Dan.

As to movements. Classical radio stations are often willing to play individual movements out of context, so it does seem reasonable to think of them as 'songs'.

Just one other thought. I voted for Joan Baez | House Of The Rising Sun. I might also vote for the Animals version later. So, it is the recorded interpretation that we have always considered (see also 'Johnny & Mary' for example), not the work itself.

Re the classical works: the only problem is that there are loads of recordings of the major classical works for the 1900-1959 period, by many different performers, and someone might think that, say, a 2004 recording of a specific work is better than a 1955 recording of the same work - classical works are more likely to incur vote splitting. I still think that classical music should be an exception to the rule but, DaveC, I can totally see your point that our polls (and the lists on the main site) focus on release dates of recordings rather than dates associated with first performance/creation. This will probably be more of an issue when we do the classical poll, but I'm sure we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I strongly think we need to make an exception for classical works and when they were first premiered. Besides the vote-splitting, often it is years before a work got a recording at all. It seems to fly in the face of the point of these polls -- voting on contemporaneous music. If this is the case, I wouldn't be able to vote for Penderecki's Threnody until the 80s poll (I think), which seems ridiculous. Same goes for Psycho -- it is inextricably linked to 1960 in my mind, and I would expect the minds of many others. This is one area where our usual notions of pop music and release date should probably be rethought.

As far as covers of songs like House of the Rising Sun, it is a completely different argument since the medium was centered on the recording by the '60s, where classical was still centered around the premiere. This is just my point of view, but I think we are doing a disservice to a major (and at AM still underrepresented) genre of music by excluding this way, especially for the early '60s where more depth is needed.

As far as work vs. movement, I'm flexible. I'm absolutely fine with movement 2 of Shostakovich's string quartet.

I don't want to institute a bias against classical compositions or soundtracks. If fans of these works feel that premiere dates should be taken as definitive then I'm happy to go that way. However, this implies that to allow voting for specific later interpretive recordings of these works would amount to having your cake and eating it too. Does that seem a reasonable point-of-view?

I have to admit that through all these discussions I've become completely confused about what works we are allowed to vote on and which we aren't. It seems that the rather clear viewpoint from the seventies poll (release-date of recordings of a song/ album) was the guiding factor, but now it seems a bit all-over-the-place. If we look at which songs/ albums have been allowed the rules seem to have become a bit to broad, falling into the following categories:

A song or album is eligible if in 1960 it:
1. was released in a recorded version.
2. was a single, even if it had been included on a released album from an earlier year.
3. was recorded, even if it wasn't released in that year.
4. was for the first time performed live that year, even if it wasn't recorded then; this goes for classical pieces.
5. appeared in a movie for the first time, even if it didn't see a physical release.

This gives us a lot of lee-way. Some recordings could actually appear in lists of 3 different years, even if it the exact same recording. I think everybody agrees that the first of these categories is a good one. Personally I would argue that numbers 2 and 3 don't make a bit of sense however. In fact, 3 is a paradox to 1. If we allow those Howlin' Wolf tunes to be in lists here because they come from the same sessions of Spoonful we probably have to find out when any song was recorded, because it shakes up the eligibility of many a song or album. Similarly, I don't see why the same version of Black is the Colour of my True Love's Hair should be allowed to appear in two years, even if it are two different decades. It would make my top 5 of 1960, but since people could have already known the song as it is in 1959, it seems rather nonsensical to hold a double standard just for this one because we all love it.

I can see why the cases of movie and classical music is tricky. To be honest, I think the choice for allowing the Psycho tracks is defend-able, as they were recorded and released in 1960. Not as an lp perhaps, but still the general public could hear a definitive performance of it in the cinemas. The soundtrack as an album might be a different case, though, as a movie isn't an album and usually a soundtrack doesn't completely cover every piece of music we hear on film. Keeping that in mind however might make it all too complex.

Classical music is another case. I get the reasoning here to include them, though I'm not sure if I agree with them. I always thought these polls were about recorded music, perhaps faulty of me, but there is very little else to go on really. I don't think the comparison with House of the Rising Sun is that bad, because both the performance of a folk song like that and a classical piece is an interpretation. I'm no expert on the matter, but I'm pretty sure that every classical recording of the same work is considered different by experts and every new conductor or orchestra delivers his own take on it. If String Quartet No. 8 in C minor gets in the final list and I have to listen to it to decide my ranking, won't I be influenced by the quality of the version I happen to listen? Wouldn't we all just vote for different interpretations? The only thing we can be sure of is that nobody votes for the performance that was actually given on the premier in 1960, because we don't have it (and I take it none of us were there). My solution here would simply be to keep our focus on recordings. Not to keep classical music from appearing, because it also opens up the possibility of new recordings of older works. Favorite interpretations can be recommended.

I'm sorry if I'm being difficult about this all. Maybe I'm nitpicking or over-thinking things. Of course I will accept choices that are made, but I just thought this all warranted more discussion. If only because I find it increasingly difficult to see whether any song I want to vote for is eligible or not.

You have raised many good points there Rob, and I think further discussion is warranted. I'll do my best to give a clear answer.

Firstly, for the early 60's (and earlier), there is significant lack of consensus regarding release dates. Sources such as RYM/Wikipedia/AllMusic/Discogs/AM do quite often disagree. Clearly arguments about release dates have happened before and will happen again. There are quite a few albums and songs in this category, and I sought to avoid filling the voting threads with such arguments by accepting all votes that are consistent with at least some of these sources. I will categorically reject any attempt by the same person to vote for the same song/album in 2 different year polls. I have made one or two suggestions (e.g. regarding Howlin' Wolf), but I know from past experience that many voters don't read all the posts in the thread, and I don't want to cannibalise peoples lists when (a) they could quite reasonably point to trusted sources that agree with them & (b) they might not notice until after votes are tallied - and would thus be most annoyed.

"Black is the colour of my true love's hair" is a special case, because we haven't just had a 1959 poll, and so I can't prevent people from voting for it twice - and maybe some voters here will vote for it again in a 50's poll. However, so far as I know, only a live version was released in 1959 and that differs from the studio version released in 1960. I think this is why AM lists the song in 1960. As the song is listed on AM as 1960, I feel that it would be most unreasonable to reject it.

More on soundtracks & classical shortly.

Regarding classical music, let's undertake a thought experiment.

Imagine that 6 rabid Beethoven fans join the forum.

1) The B-fans vote for every Beethoven recording released during the 70's. Several near identical versions of the same works make the decade poll. We are not happy. Especially as we know that the same thing will happen in the 1960's.

2) To eliminate this bias, we say that B-fans must nominate their favourite all-time recording of each work and only vote for that when it comes around. Firstly this would be almost impossible for poll moderators to manage. Furthermore, classical fans rarely agree upon definitive recordings (and these change as new recordings are released). In this scenario it is unlikely that any Beethoven recordings would ever make the cut. B-fans would say that we are deliberately manipulating the rules to exclude them.

3) To be fair to everyone, we say that B-fans can vote for works based upon premiere date. This would be uncomplicated as classical works are usually dated this way. B-fans would see their favourites top the polls during the 1800's poll, and would vote for other music during the 1960's & 1970's. Everyone is reasonably happy.

I think that the same argument applies for Soundtracks - maybe not as clearly, but still this view is widely held.

The dialogue above dovetailed in on this conclusion, but I was trying to make the point that if we agree that scenario (3) is the fairest, then it is because (1) & (2) really are not fair for these types of works. I don't know if Henrik or sonofsamiam have ever voted for Psycho tracks in 1975 or 1997, but I think that it is fair to vote for them in 1960 and not fair to vote for them in 1975 or 1997. The same goes for classical works. Just vote for the best version you have heard. In my experience, different recordings of classical works don't really effect how I compare them with other music, as interpretations are subtle and always(?) solidly based upon the original score.

It's actually a mistake that it's listed as 1960. I added the song to my list here because you said it would be eligible and I didn't want to argue about it, but I honestly don't think it should be eligible.
