PlasticRam brings up a good question. I have both "Misirlou" and "Miserlou" in my music library. They are clearly different (though both very similar). I could never decide which I like better, so when I made my lists, I always listed it as Dick Dale - Misirlou/Miserlou. Does anyone know if these are completely different instrumentals or just different versions of the same instrumental?

This is a different version than the 4 minute 'Misirlou Twist' that appears on the album. Later releases of this single version appear to (sometimes) have been renamed Misirlou.

Reading the Wikipedia page on the very interesting history of the song strongly suggests that the correct spelling would be Misirlou.

My guess - based on zero evidence - would be that the printing on the original single was a transcription error of some sort. So we should name it err ... one or the other.

Much has been said on this forum about Brel’s charismatic live perfomances. His studio albums were great (my favourite Brel album is a studio album – Ces gens-là from 1965), but this live recording from the famous Olympia theatre in Paris in 1961 made me realise that his live performances were often on a different level than his studio recordings. They were more intense, and they showcased Brel's talents more vividly. Brel’s 1964 performance at the Olympia is arguably more popular, but I prefer the 1961 performance because of the perfectly timed changes of mood, and because it includes more Brel songs that I’m fond of.

This album represents much of what I treasure about Brel, and listening to it is, to me, nothing short of a mesmerizing experience. Now I can finally answer the question: if there was one live performance in the history of music that you would have loved to be a part of, which one would it be? Brel at the Olympia in 1961. It seems that I’m the only one around here who feels this way about this album, but that’s okay – it makes it all the more special.

I discovered this album a few years ago while living in Glasgow, Scotland. At the time, the only Patsy Cline song I knew was “Crazy”. When I told this to a friend of mine one Sunday morning at a coffee shop, she appeared to be outraged that I only knew the one song. Loving Patsy was not just an American thing, she said, and was surprised that I’d not been exposed to more Patsy songs given the amount of Patsy-themed parties in Glasgow (I’d not been aware of any of these parties and suspected that she was organising all of them – the woman was clearly a fan). Much to the amusement of the people sitting at the table next to us, my friend then proceeded to give me a 10-minute speech about the legend that is Patsy Cline: her amazing voice, the important role she played against sexism in the music scene of the 50s and 60s, the tragic accident that caused her life to come to an early end just as she reached her prime and was at the height of her popularity.

So when I got back home in the afternoon I decided to listen to a Patsy Cline album. I chose Sentimentally Yours, the album that was released only 7 months before she died in a plane crash. I guess we all have favourite memories of a specific moment or day that we discovered an album that moved us. That rainy Sunday afternoon in Glasgow with Patsy singing through my headphones is one of my favourite memories of music discovery. It was as if, in the course of listening to the album, I understood what my friend meant about Patsy being a legend. I loved the seamless blend of pop music and the Nashville country sound of the time, and I loved how she caressed every song with that gorgeous, classy voice of hers. Massive Patsy Cline fan, right here.

About 70 hours until I compile the results. Low turnout so far. There is still huge potential to influence the results. A #1 album vote is still sufficient to tie for #10 AOTY.

Again, I couldn't get as much listening done as I would have liked (damn you, Moderately Acclaimed Albums game!), but I have more favorites in this year than 1960 and 1961 so it isn't a huge problem.

3. John Barry - James Bond Theme
4. Ray Charles - I Can't Stop Loving You

I'm busy today, so results in 24 hours. Still time to register a last minute vote.

BTW It looks as if we're going a bit rogue this time with 6 of our top 10 songs from outside the AM top 10 and 7 (yes seven) of our top 10 albums from outside the AM top 10 as it stands.

It doesn't really matter, since this is a song outside the top 15, but the one I really wanted to place at No. 23 was Le lion est mort ce soir, by Henri Salvador, a nice cover of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, with French lyrics.

I wish Love Me Do wouldn't have made it, both when you think of all the great songs from this year that didn't make it and the great Beatles songs that are bound to not make it.
I feel like that

Sorry, I forgot to post the comparative results of 1962 with the last 1960s Poll. Sadly the participation decreased quite a lot this time (last time it happened the opposite, the participation increased). This time we had 14 people voting for albums and last time (2010) 12 voters. With less difference in the number of voters the comparative results were quite different instead, confirming the rule of "less people voting, more unpredictable results."

The results for albums for 1962 were then:
1. Howlin' Wolf - Howlin' Wolf
2. Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music
3. Jacques Brel - Jacques Brel
4. Booker T. & the M.G.s - Green Onions
5. Françoise Hardy - Tous les garçons et les filles
6. Charlie Mingus – Tijuana Moods
7. John Coltrane – 'Live' at the Village Vanguard
8. Duke Ellington – Money Jungle
9. Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd – Jazz Samba
10. Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan

A quite different Top 10, the new entries are Dick Dale and His Del-Tones' "Surfer's Choice" (#4, #17 last time), Jacques Brel's "Enregistrement public à l'Olympia 1961" (#5, not ranked last time), Amália Rodrigues' "Amália Rodrigues (Busto)" (#6, #32 last time), Patsy Cline's "Sentimentally Yours" (#7, #36 last time) and Charlie Mingus' "Oh Yeah" (#10, #13 last time). The ones exiting the Top 10 were Booker T. & the M.G.s' "Green Onions" (#15 this time), Françoise Hardy's "Tous les garçons et les filles" (#12 this time), John Coltrane's "'Live' at the Village Vanguard" (#11 this time), Duke Ellington's Money Jungle" (suffering the biggest fall from #8 to #20) and Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd's "Jazz Samba" (#16 this time). I'm going to miss Françoise Hardy but I can't complain, this time we have Amália Rodrigues.

And about songs:
1. Booker T. & the MG’s - Green Onions
2. Dick Dale and the Del-Tones - Miserlou
3. Sam Cooke - Bring It on Home to Me
4. The John Barry Seven & Orchestra - The James Bond Theme
5. The Beatles - Love Me Do
6. Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl
7. Little Eva - The Loco-Motion
8. Elvis Presley - Return to Sender
9. Quincy Jones - Soul Bossa Nova
10. The Crystals - He's a Rebel

The most striking difference this time is the inclusion of The Miracles' "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" (jumping from the #23 position on the last poll directly from #2 this time). The other new entries are The Contours' "Do You Love Me" (#7, #15 last time), The Chantays' "Pipeline" (#8, #13 last time) and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" (#9, #71 last time), replacing Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl" (#40 this time), Elvis Presley's "Return to Sender" (#25 this time), Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova" (#11 this time) and The Crystals' "He's a Rebel" (#36). The one I'm gonna miss the most is Quincy Jones' bouncy tune.

I think it is very likely to be part of the additional 50 songs to make the cut. It's very high op the list now.

I'm betting any song with 100 points is making it to the finals.
