Question about The Sound of Silence. I suspect most people have it as a 1965 song, as that specific version is the more well known one, but the earlier acoustic version is from 1964. Do we count them as separate songs? I don't think that is the usual practice. Bonnielaurel votes for it now, so perhaps it should count as a 1964 song?

Hmm, I think we had this discussion before. I'm fine with counting the year of the earliest release of certain songs as eligible. But you gotta keep in mind that you're voting for a (in most cases) inferior version of a favorite song. If you're going to rank it in your list you should do it according to how much you like that early version and not the well-known version released later on (which happened on other occasions).

My thinking on this:-
- Vote for the version you like best, in the year it was released.
- We don't want two versions of a song by the same artist in the decade poll.
- Therefore, I won't count two separate votes from the same voter for The Sound of Silence
- I will count votes cast in 1964 and votes cast in 1965 (provided nobody tries to vote for it both times)
- If The Sound of Silence doesn't make the top 10 for 1964 or 1965, then it's combined 1964/1965 votes will be counted for the wild-card race. So one way or another it's overall popularity will be reflected in the decade poll.
- I think this will work out fine. In the decade poll you can again vote based on your favourite version.

Same goes for these 2 classic songs. As kid in the 70's I loved to watch Dr. Who. Even though I could never really understand what it was about, it was very spooky and exciting.

I only saw this today. Paul Simon and I prefer the acoustic original album version. Art Garfunkel and the rest of the world prefer the single version, which is a remix with electric guitars. Your suggestion is okay with me.
De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum.

Re: Songs and Albums of 1964 Poll

Post by Honorio »

Time for the comparative results of 1964 with the last 1960s Poll. Again the partipation has increased from last time (2010) with almost the same numbers as in 1963 , 20 vs. 14 for albums and 25 vs. 13 for songs.

The results for albums for 1964 were then:
1. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
2. Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan
3. Stan Getz & João Gilberto (Featuring Antônio Carlos Jobim) - Getz/Gilberto
4. Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
5. Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
6. Jacques Brel - Olympia 64
7. The Beatles - Beatles for Sale
8. The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones
9. Ennio Morricone - Per un pugno di dollari
10. The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica

The new entries are Simon & Garfunkel's "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." (#6, #25 last time), Jerry Lee Lewis' "Live at the Star-Club, Hamburg" (#8, #14 last time) and The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" (#9, #20 this time). The ones exiting the Top 10 are The Rolling Stones' debut album (#13 this time), Ennio Morricone's "Per un pugno di dollari" (#21 this time) and The Ronettes' "Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica" (#11 this time). Another change is the different position of Bob Dylan's "Another Side of Bob Dylan" (#2 last time and now #10). I like the new entries but I hope The Ronettes enter finally thanks to the wild card round (they are right now very well positioned).

And about songs:
1. The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun
2. The Kinks - You Really Got Me
3. The Beach Boys - I Get Around
4. Dionne Warwick - Walk on By
5. Stan Getz & João Gilberto - The Girl From Ipanema
6. The Zombies - She's Not There
7. The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby
8. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'
9. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
10. Jacques Brel - Amsterdam

The most striking difference is the absence of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" (it was included as a 1965 song then because of its single release, even if it was released in 1964 as part of the album "Ain't That Good News"). So the only new real entry is The Temptations' "My Girl" (#7, #16 last time) while there are two songs exiting the Top 10, Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By" (#12 this time) and The Zombies' "She's Not There " (#11 this time).

Rob wrote:Question about The Sound of Silence.
I have a question about this song. The 1965 single version states on the 45 that it's from Wednesday Morning 3 AM album (1964 release). The version I like best is the one with the added instruments that was put on the Sounds Of Silence album released in 1966. Does anyone know for sure which version the 1965 single is?
