Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 6 - Round 1.14
Does anyone remember which previous MAA Souvlaki was played in? I know I listened to it before but I can't remember if I liked it and it's not on Spotify, and I want to see if I wrote down a rating for it.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 6 - Round 1.14
1. Kate Bush - The Dreaming vs. Sarah Vaughan - With Clifford Brown
Kate Bush is hard to beat for me. The Dreaming, however isn't my favorite album of hers. It's maybe a little to affected at times and lacks the variety of her best work. Nonetheless, there are some seriously great compositions on there and her vocal delivery remains something else, so it still gets an easy win. Admittedly, the type of music Vaughan and Brown make rarely connects very deeply with me and requires a certain mood. Some songs are very nice, but it moves to slowly and monotonously for me in general.
2. Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain vs. Slowdive - Souvlaki
For a soul singer An Peebles sounds very down to earth. Not necessarily gritty, but tougher than usual. That's perhaps why I like her so much. The album is a nice surprise, not just because of Peebles' unique delivery, but also because she apparently found a backing band with a great feel for rhythm.
I've noticed I don't like shoegaze much. Souvlaki has a couple of captivating songs, but those happen to be the ones in which they don't seem to gaze at their shoes and get a bit more lively. Otherwise it's a bit dull.
3. Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime vs. Burzum- Filosofem
Hard rock! Who has the best riffs? It's a tight competition. Burzum probably. I love, love, love the first three tracks of Filosofem, but why did they also include something that sounds like a tribute to Kraftwerk? Now I like Kraftwerk, but not right in the middle of a hard-hitting metal album. And that particular song, Rundgang um die tranzendentale Saule der Singelaritat also goes on for 25 minutes for some reason. Why ruin a perfect album in that way?
Still they get my vote, because those other tracks are too amazing to ignore. Nonetheless, Yank Crime deliver some stiff competition. The playing is great, but I'm not to fond of people screaming and yelling their lyrics, so it gets a bit tiresome from time to time.
4. NoMeansNo - Wrong vs. Lafayette Afro Rock Band - Malik
More hard rock. Not to be outdone by Drive Like Jehu and Burzum NoMeansNo just deliver a relentless onslaught that refuses to stop til the album is finished. I love that there is no second of pause between the songs. Every time you think you will get a little moment of peace for your ears these guys just start with the next track, as ferociously as the last one. This week has three great hard rock albums, but this is the victor, simply by, ironically, having nothing wrong about it.
Malik is an altogether more friendly affair, with it's party grooves. But damn, it's a nice funky album. This was actually the hardest match-up of the week for me.

Unfortunately, I've had a very busy week, so I can only vote in the first two matchups...
Sarah Vaughan - With Clifford Brown
Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain

Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain
Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 6 - Round 1.14
The only matchup in which I've listened to both albums (Souvlaki only quite recently actually) but this is a no-brainer.
2.Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain vs. Slowdive - Souvlaki

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 6 - Round 1.14
My picks:
1. Kate Bush - The Dreaming vs. Sarah Vaughan - With Clifford Brown
The Sarah Vaughn album was my nomination -as good as it is though, I can't deny my love for The Dreaming, a top 100 album for me. Man, I hate when this happens!
2. Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain vs. Slowdive - Souvlaki
3. Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime vs. Burzum- Filosofem
4. NoMeansNo - Wrong vs. Lafayette Afro Rock Band - Malik
This one's so close for me - I really hope this isn't the deciding vote!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 6 - Round 1.14
I vote for Yank Crime.
When nominating it, I didn't have much hope for it going far in the tournament, so seeing "Burzum" show up against it was a beacon of hope. Neither is in a genre well supported in AM, but both are pretty great. Yank Crime is a bit front loaded, and nothing in it beats Luau, but it's overall a great album, probably the best non Fugazi post hardcore album of the decade (I only see Jawbox and Jesus Lizard to contest that). I don't know much about black metal, but the very atmospheric Filosofem is far from the image of it I had (see Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir) but as Rob said, the 25 minute track is really out of place and not that interesting.
Burzum raises the question of how terrible a person can be before it starts impacting how you judge its music, Varg Vikernes being the 2nd worst human being (Ian Watkins from Lostprophets keeps the crown) I have heard music from ; though to his credit he doesn't use his music to promote his despicable beliefs.
