1. Gorillaz - Demon Days vs. - Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
Two departure albums for two artists with a well established sound. Damon Albarn faced the fact that his side band was going to be his main project after the indefinite hiatus of Blur making a decided step beyond and his better album after "Parklife." And Leonard Cohen, exactly 20 years after his debut, switched from his intimate guitar-based sound to an epic synth-based sound. Maybe "Demon Days" is better produced but the songwriting on "I'm Your Man" is hard to beat.

2. Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap vs. Band of Horses - Everything All of the Time
Two albums I like but not love. My first intention was voting for "Acid Rap" in part because I enjoyed it (fresh rhymes and rhythms) and in part for not disappointing again a Nassim "bored of seeing great rap albums wrecked by average rock albums." But then I changed my vote in part because I enjoyed BoH debut album (powerful and melodic) and in part for not disappointing Miguel, my 15-year-old son (he loves "The Funeral"). Sorry, Nassim, he's my son, you know…

3. Deep Purple - Burn vs. Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
I admit not being too familiar with the Deep Purple recorded output after the Mark II line-up but I liked this debut of Mark III more than I expected, rooted in blues and more hard rock than heavy metal. Anyway my vote goes to a Drive-by Truckers' album that brilliantly updates Southern Rock and makes another step up on a consistent discography (especially from 2001 to 2008). Maybe too long but the alternance of singers and songwriters make it varied enough.

4. Ólafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs vs. New Power Generation - Exodus
Romain bracket. And also the easiest decision of the week for me. The NPG album got very good numbers on it (some even excellent like "The Good Life") but, like other Prince-related albums, would benefit from heavy editing. On the other hand, Olafúr Arnalds' album is short and to the point. 23 minutes are enough to immerse yourself in a frozen but warm landscape (just like the geothermal warm waters of Bláa lónið in Iceland). One of the discoveries of MAA6 for me.

Gorillaz - Demon Days
Band Of Horses - Everything All Of The Time
The Drive By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
Ólafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs

It really hurt to vote against Leonard Cohen. I've joked a lot about my top 2 albums facing each other every week, but this week took it to a whole new level, since "Demon Days" and "I'm Your Man" are in my top 5 albums for the entire game!

I'm on vacation and don't have access to my notes so for now I'll vote Leonard Cohen and DBT.

1. Gorillaz - Demon Days vs. Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
I'd usually take Leonard Cohen - but not for this album. The synths don't suit him; it all comes off as very (dated) 80s. Gorillaz on the other hand - a great step forward and highlight of their catalogue.

2. Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap vs. Band Of Horses - Everything All Of The Time
I listened to both of them again - still neither of them do that much for me. I'll let others fight this one.

3. Deep Purple - Burn vs. The Drive By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark

4. Ólafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs vs. New Power Generation - Exodus
I originally got Living Room Songs mistaking it for an Ólöf Arnalds album. :P Really loved it then even though I was quite surprised with the change in sound for her before I realised it was her cousin's album! So it ended up with me discovering a new artist with much great music to be explored. This is still one of my favourites from him.

1. Gorillaz - Demon Days vs. Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

It hurts to vote against Gorillaz, but if anyone's going to put up a good fight, it's Leonard Cohen. Am I biased because it's him? Maybe. But I don't think anyone else could have made an album so personal and yet so gleefully kitsch. That low snarl really sets him apart from other pop singers, and puts a weird stylistic dichotomy in the music that's nothing if not memorable.

2. Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap vs. Band Of Horses - Everything All Of The Time

Interesting, fun and charismatic hip-hop over ponderous, overplayed indie rock any day of the week.

Going away for a few weeks so that might be all I have time for now! :? I'll try and pop back in for the later rounds though.

1. Gorillaz - Demon Days vs. Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

Definitely a tough one. Gorillaz is an inventive effort with many styles that all get pulled of very well. I'm Your Man suffers at time from dated productions, but the lyrics are so great and Cohen's delivery is so much part of the fun that I can't vote against it yet. Also, for some reason it's hard for me to think of Demon Days as moderately acclaimed. I'm really surprised it doesn't rank in the AM top 500, since it is so influential and much-beloved. It feels almost counter-intuitive to vote for it in this game.

2. Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap vs. Band Of Horses - Everything All Of The Time

Within quite a distance the weakest match-up this week. Having said that, Acid Rap did grow on me somewhat. It's fun and unique enough to deserve a listen every once in a while. I like Everything All of the Time also, but it just rarely ever becomes really memorable.

3. Deep Purple - Burn vs. The Drive By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark

As much as I love the driving hard rock of burn, I have to go with Brighter Than Creation's Dark, which is definitely among the top albums in this game. It also gets better with every listen. And I loved it the first time!

4. Ólafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs vs. New Power Generation - Exodus
I finally listened to Exodus this round. I like it a lot. At its best it is a great funk album, worthy of Parliament/ Funkadelic. To bad about the skits, they threaten to suck the life out of it now and then. Also, too bad Exodus had to rank against the best album of the week and a top contender for the main prize in my opinion. Living Room Songs is just too beautiful and moving.

Forgot to vote !

1. Gorillaz - Demon Days
Both have great songwriting, only one has good production value.

2. Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap
Yes Honorio, I'd be a bit annoyed... not as much as if it lost to a middle of road 70s classic rock, cause I'm an indie kid at heart, but still, Everything All the Time's bombast is not that exciting.
