You voted for it in 1965 and it has already qualified for the decade poll.

Oh, right. Thanks, for pointing that out. I didn't realize. I'll change the song list, but since I didn't vote for the album, I'll let that be.

Thanks Andre - I'm sold. Interesting how allmusic's review, while stating 1966, starts with this quote:

"Fred Neil's self-titled second album was a languid and fluid gem that continues to stand outside of time decades later. The beautifully sad, introspective songs of weary modern urban disaffection that Neil brought to these sessions in 1967 are among the best he ever wrote,..."

His next album called "Sessions" was recorded in 1967, so the reviewer could be a bit mixed up here. Especially as even RYM says that "Fred Neil" was recorded in 1966.

I didn't know about that and I have the 'British' version at #4 on my list. According to RYM, the American version excludes both "Mothers Little Helper" and "Out of Time", so I wouldn't rate it higher myself.

Anyway, I don't know how cases like this have been settled in the past. So I'm hoping to hear from other folks who have engaged in this debate previously. Do we vote for either version or for the 'original' version?

OK but if you read the conversation earlier in this thread, you may see that Andre's found 3 other sources that show the release year as 1966. Unless we have something more definitive than RYM opposing that, I think we should stick with 1966 (which is where AM has it listed).

The catalog number of the album is Capitol 2665, which is actually 12 numbers AFTER the Sgt. Pepper's album which is 2653, so not only was it from 1967, it's also from later in the year than the February release that is listed on RYM. It likely was released in July 1967.

But here I disagree with this assumption - catalog number sequence does not necessarily correlate to release date sequence. In fact, the earliest Billboard mention of the album appears in the "new release" section in the February 11, 1967 issue - several months prior to Sgt. Peppers release. Yet while this (I feel) shows the catalog number as non-sequential with regards to release date, I'm still not convinced the album was actually released in 1967 based on the abundance of evidence to the contrary.

The Elmore James is a better version but I wouldn't call the Spencer Davis version weak.

That's pretty conclusive for me. If it's in that issue but not ever mentioned in any 1966 issue I'm going with 1967. I gotta go with the contemporary evidence rather than a few modern discographies that most likely all copied from each other's info. I'm sure the album was recorded in 1966, which is probably where that date came from, but I'm interested in release dates, not recording dates.

By the way, this site has "The Dolphins" listed as 1967. That song is on the same album as "Everybody's Talkin," which is listed as 1966, and so is the album.

Not an expert, but I would say 1966:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Neil_%28album%29

Thanks Andre - I'm sold. Interesting how allmusic's review, while stating 1966, starts with this quote:

"Fred Neil's self-titled second album was a languid and fluid gem that continues to stand outside of time decades later. The beautifully sad, introspective songs of weary modern urban disaffection that Neil brought to these sessions in 1967 are among the best he ever wrote,..."
Great work, guys!

Love "Everybody's Talkin..." and would like to include it at nr. 4 on my 1966 list should it be considered eligible. Maybe we should build a committee or a council or something to settle the question. Or call on Henrik.

And as RagRut mentions we should be sure about release date.

The song has gotten the attention it needs and deserves by now, so it should reach the decade poll. But for me the specific year is more important.

And my own contribution: Is it an inferior version of a song on any 1966 version?

I would trust the comprehensive Capital discography Honorio contributed over RYM or Billboard. I too am interested in release date, of course, which is why I raised the question in the first place. I believe the contemporary evidence shows that the album was released in late 1966 but became more widely acknowledged in early 1967. I understand other interpretations of the evidence and respect them; whichever we ultimately choose is fine by me. The album (for now) will appear on my 1966 list.

Billboard is from that time. That Capitol discography is not. What would make you feel that the Capitol discography is more trustworthy than actual evidence from the time?

The back of the original album cover says 1966.

Print reads:

1966 Coconut Grove Music

Was it released then? I don't know.
I'll step aside and let everyone else decide where they want to put this.

That just means that the songs were published with BMI in 1966. That's not surprising since they were all recorded then. There's a lot off prep wprk that has to be done before an album actually gets released. The sover has to be designed, and then put together and made, etc....

Nancy is 1965.
Fred Neil is 1967.
Equals is 1967.
Nancy Sinatra: Wikipedia says it was released on February 22, 1966; but RYM says 1965 for the single. Do I have to remove it? I don't think anyone voted for it in 1965?

Fred Neil: is there a decision yet? (Wiki says 1966; RYM says 1967)

Equals: I'll throw that one out, which is great news for "Yellow Submarine". (Wiki says 1966, but RYM says 1967)
They give awards for that music? I thought just ear plugs. (Woody Allen in Annie Hall)

The problem with Nancy Sinatra is I can't go back to 1965 and vote for it there, so maybe I should just leave it?

Even this site lists it as 1965. If nobody voted for it in 1965 it's because nobody here thinks it's all that great, apparently.

Oo, man, it's so Brucey in here. I recommend the Songs and Albums of 1966 Poll for all people needing their daily dose of Bruce. Guaranteed 100% with Bruce contemptuously dismissing your tastes.

Maybe it'll be for nowt, but I'd say keep it - I originally had it on my 1965 list but moved it to this one due to the same confusion.

If we'd mistakenly voted for a song in the wrong year, our appreciation for it should still be shown! That's why I'm glad Roadrunner was counted in the '70s poll and why I think the 'wildcard' poll is such a great idea.

I've been off the grid for a few days and missed all the fun. :o

These "Boots Are Made for Walkin'" was on 10 of the lists submitted for 1965. It only received 2 top 15 positions for a total of 9 points. Clearly the majority has it listed as 1965. I don't think it has any chance even as a wild-card, But you are welcome to vote for it in 1966.

I'm not going to weigh in directly on that one. Where there is any doubt/disagreement, I will accept votes for the album and songs in either year (just not both years from the same person). The wild-card system will ensure that overall popularity will be reflected in the decade poll.
