Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
Wow, 10th nominations for Chic ? Is that a record ? (and where' Kraftwerk by the way).
I would have bet Mariah Carey would be a first year inductee... I know she's not really rock & roll but I assumed based on longevity and popularity she'd get in.
I guess NWA have 99% chance to make it in : no other hip-hop band nominated, a successful biopic in theater and not that many other bands nominated that could act as headliners.
Everybody seemed to think Nine Inch Nails was a sure shot last year so I guess they should be considered runner-ups, that being said when hard rock bands are very often overlooked, I have a hard time imagining industrial bands will gather a lot of votes in there.
Surprised that Cheap Trick are nominated for the first time, they seem very "HoF like".
I guess Steve Miller has its chance, he might gather the votes that went to the baffling induction of Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
Hoping for the Smiths, NiN, Janet, NWA, Yes, and Chic. Very good and underrated class. No real big headliners except Janet and NWA I guess but lots of good deserving bands and artists.
Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
I didn't think Carey would be nominated in her first year of eligibility- she's never been a big critical favorite, and commercial success isn't a big factor. Maybe sometime down the road.
Chicago finally got a nomination. Wonder if it will go the way of Heart, Neil Diamond, etc. who had to wait for nominations, but when they finally got one, they were inducted.

Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
Definitely hoping the Smiths and the Cars get in. Also based on the recent trend of prog rock artists getting in (with Rush getting in last year), I wouldn't be surprised if Yes and/or Deep Purple were inducted.
Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
And the winners are : N.W.A., Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, and Steve Miller
Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
Janet's lack of induction is a disappointment, given that she released an album that reminded people that she is a strong artist, and in turn, reminded of her impact/legacy.
Next year will make her 10th year of eligibility- as frustrating as that may seem, there are acts who've waited just as long and longer. Among this year's inductees, four have been eligible longer:
Cheap Trick: 13 years
Chicago: 21 years
Deep Purple: 22 years
Steve Miller: 22 years
And look at Chic- most nominations out of anyone, and yet to be inducted.

Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
I really don’t get the criteria the Hall uses to vote for who they deem worthy. (Fortunately, I usually don’t take the Hall itself seriously enough to get upset over it.) Is it popularity? Acclaim? Influence? All three? The inconsistency of their voting patterns would seem to indicate that even they have no clue. Yes and The Smiths would certainly seem to fit the acclaim and influence criteria over anyone inducted this year except for N.W.A. And The Spinners, The Cars, and Janet (at least from what I know) would seem to meet the “pop” criteria over anyone besides, maybe, Chicago. And (most egregious in my mind) Chic seems to check off every box! (Have the voters even heard “Get Lucky,” for just one example?) Some might argue with me, but I just don’t understand how Cheap Trick and Steve Miller gets in ahead of any of the artists I mentioned. I have also always made it a point to avoid looking at the complete list of inductees. I have a feeling if I knew some of those that were eligible and had never even been nominated, I would feel quite ill...

Anyway, amongst this crop of artists, many do seem like shoo-ins anyway (Kanye, LCD, Radiohead).
Some like Portishead and PJ Harvey might be too obscure for the Rock Hall and its committee, but let's see what happens.

That really is not a good look for the RnRHOF to not have those groups and solo artists not in the Hall. Are you kidding me that Coltrane, Ellington and Sinatra not in? I sort of see it with Coltrane because they just don't seem to give much of a damn about jazz but it's still Coltrane and Ellington. And Sinatra, WTF? that has to be an automatic.whuntva wrote:The hall does seem like kind of a sham sometimes.

The Smiths, The Cure, Chic, Janet Jackson(although I thought with her resurgence in the public eye it would have helped her) will get in eventually. I have no hope for Massive Attack because the genre will just cause more outrage than their already is for the HOF. A lot of people already get upset if a non-rock act gets in or someone who didn't play a guitar LOL.
Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
As evidenced by four of this year's inductees, sometimes it just takes a little (or a lot) of time.
As far as I can tell, the last time that a female wasn't inducted as a performer- solo or as part of a group- was the 2004 ceremony (the prior year also had no female inductees).

Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
Does Janet Jackson have that much of a legacy/ impact though? I come from a generation that grew up just after her golden period had ended and in contrary to many other icons of the period or even every act that is inducted in the Hall of Fame this year, I know really nothing of Janet Jackson outside of her being a celebrity of a bygone era. Her music hasn't lasted as much as, say, Prince, Michael Jackson and Madonna. I don't know how many of my generation are really familiar with her work. Perhaps that's just me. I just don't see much of a legacy, though she might benefit from the eighties revival that has occured the last few years.JR wrote:Janet's lack of induction is a disappointment, given that she released an album that reminded people that she is a strong artist, and in turn, reminded of her impact/legacy.

In November 2010, Billboard released its "Top 50 R&B / Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years" list and ranked her at number five.[283] She ranks as the top artist on the chart with 15 number ones in the past twenty-five years, garnering 27 top ten hits between 1985 and 2001, and 33 consecutive top 40 hits from 1985 through 2004. The most awarded artist in the history of the Billboard Music Awards with 33 wins, she is one an elite group of musical acts, such as Madonna, Aerosmith, Garth Brooks and Eric Clapton, whom Billboard credits for "redefining the landscape of popular music." In November 2014, Jackson was voted 'Queen of Pop' by a poll conducted online by VH1.com.
Look I'm not going to go through all of her accomplishments but that's a small sample size not to mention the artists she influenced: Beyonce, Aaliyah, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Usher, N'Sync, etc. She is if not the most popular and influential female artist of the last 30-40 years in the top 3-5. Her tours broke records, her shows were must see, and her videos were legendary, impactful, copied. She without a doubt to me left a legacy and impact.
Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
I agree with a lot of what has been said here already. First and foremost, the fact that Frank Sinatra is not in the Hall is remarkably stupid. I can't think of a single good reason that he hasn't been in for a few decades already.
As for this year's class of inductees, I'm gonna be honest, it sucks. Cheap Trick and Steve Miller are straight up undeserving. I think they might have 5 good songs between them. Chicago had some good years I guess, but they also had a lot of really bad ones with cheesy over the top love songs. NWA and Deep Purple are the only two of the five I can really get behind. It also doesn't help that the likes of The Smiths, The Cars and Chic were also on the list that could be voted for.
Also, to my knowledge, Nile Rodgers isn't in the Hall even as a producer? That's another miscarriage of justice...he's put his fingerprints on like 40 years of music at this point.

It's kind of like any other Hall of Fame. I don't know if you are a sports fan but the Baseball and Pro Football Hall of Fames kind of work backwards in their logic in making a player wait longer than they should and then someone that has been waiting longer than that player finally getting in before the player that waited longer than they should have. It's just what they do.Listyguy wrote:I agree with a lot of what has been said here already. First and foremost, the fact that Frank Sinatra is not in the Hall is remarkably stupid. Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
Except for the very biggest names, the Hall of Fame has a hard time grasping even the 1980s. I grew up on the '80s, and hell, I feel a bit over the hill amongst millennials -- so where does that put the Hall of Fame, venerating in some cases baby boomer table scraps?
Well, there's always the dramatic on-stage reunions (or dramatic lack thereof).
As for Sinatra, I assume he doesn't fall within the criteria. Or if he does, say as an Early Influence, the HOF might be too embarrassed to have put him off for so long.
Incidentally:
Steve Miller named to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — then blasts it as 'elitist'

"[The Hall of Fame] needs to be ours, the American people," Miller said. "It was co-opted by these guys who took it and ran it the way they wanted to. But they're getting old and getting weak and it's harder for their fingers to hold onto the levers of power.

Such a shame that Thin Lizzy nor Iron Maiden are nowhere on that list. The HoF is the equivalent of the Grammys with corporate loggerheads catering to the record industry!

I don't doubt anything you say and I now she was big and succesfull for a time. My concern is more with how she is viewed nowadays. Though you could say her legacy lives on through the works of artists she influenced, her own work just seems to have faded from the public space. She isn't forgotten perhaps, but time isn't kind on her presence. However, it might just be a regional thing or me missing things.bootsy wrote:Wow, yeah she has that much of a legacy and impact. Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
I had a hunch that Deep Purple would get for the 2016 induction considering the number of articles I've read calling its exclusion the biggest snub of the Rock HoF last year. Now it's Chic's turn to be labelled the most glaring omission. I predict that Chic will most probably enter next year along with The Smiths, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Yes and either Janet Jackson or 2Pac for the last spot.
Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
You act like she was hot for a minute and then fell off. She was bigger and successful for more than just a time. The mid to late 80s and pretty much the entire decade of the 90s and even in the early 00s she was big and successful. All up until the Super Bowl incident. Most arts have faded away long before Janet has especially during that time period I mentioned. You don't stay on top forever. Most artist would love to have 1/4th of the success she had. They would love to have the success she had in the mid to late 80s and be happy with that. I really can't believe I'm having this conversation. If you don't how successful she was during those periods I can't really help and explain to you more than I am doing now. You probably have been living in a closet or something if you think she just had some success for a time. That's a long damn time then.Rob wrote: I don't doubt anything you say and I now she was big and succesfull for a time. My concern is more with how she is viewed nowadays. Though you could say her legacy lives on through the works of artists she influenced, her own work just seems to have faded from the public space. She isn't forgotten perhaps, but time isn't kind on her presence. However, it might just be a regional thing or me missing things.

Re: 2015 Rock Hall of Fame Nominees (For 2016 Induction Cere
You are overreacting a bit. I never claimed she wasn't big or didn't have a worthy career. I just stated my feeling that she seems to have faded. I'm talking about right now, not the period of the mid-eighties til the early zeroes. I just have the feeling that her music isn't much talked about anymore, let alone played. I don't even hear her much on radio stations that mostly play music of the eighties and nineties. Just compare it with that other much mentioned hall-of-fame snub, Chic. Their career didn't have the length of Jackson's, but their presence can still be felt and Good Times and Le Freak never seem to have really left the public consciousness or the airwaves. Again, I could be wrong, but I don't notice anything like that with Janet Jackson. Also, this is not a personal attack on Jackson or her music. Just some thoughts I got regarding her status nowadays; more of a hypothesis actually.bootsy wrote:I really can't believe I'm having this conversation.

Not overreacting to anything. You said that she was big for a time and that simply is not true. And everyone knows she isn't big anymore like she used to be but as I said no one stays on top forever but 15-20 years of sustained big time success can't be diminished to she was big for a time.Rob wrote:You are overreacting a bit. I agree with you about Chic they should be in as well. No arguments there.
