Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 2

Post by Bang Jan »

The way this game works is that you will be given four sets of four albums each. You have to rank each set from best to worst. Your #1 will be given 4 points, #2 3 points and so on. The winner of each bracket will advance into the next round. Ties will be broken by number of first place votes.

Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Wednesday at 16:00 UTC.

Next set of brackets:

38 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines
123 | Queen | A Night at the Opera
158 | Daft Punk | Homework
204 | Kanye West | The College Dropout

50 | Love | Forever Changes
66 | David Bowie | Hunky Dory
165 | Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread
208 | Hüsker Dü | Zen Arcade

51 | Joni Mitchell | Blue
120 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
173 | Jefferson Airplane | Surrealistic Pillow
256 | Soundgarden | Superunknown

27 | The Doors | The Doors
74 | Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II
139 | Air | Moon Safari
232 | Björk | Post

Not too fond of any of these 4:
123 | Queen | A Night at the Opera
38 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines
204 | Kanye West | The College Dropout
158 | Daft Punk | Homework

Love the first 2. Don't mind the 3rd. Can't stand the 4th:
208 | Hüsker Dü | Zen Arcade
50 | Love | Forever Changes
66 | David Bowie | Hunky Dory
165 | Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread

The first 3 are pretty good. Superunknown is not bad either.:
51 | Joni Mitchell | Blue
120 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
173 | Jefferson Airplane | Surrealistic Pillow
256 | Soundgarden | Superunknown

The first 2 are great. 3rd is fine. Don't like the 4th.:
27 | The Doors | The Doors
74 | Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II
139 | Air | Moon Safari
232 | Björk | Post

1- A Night at the Opera
2- The College Dropout
3- Homework
4- Blue Lines
The Queen album is an all time favorite, a sprawling album in the truest sense of the word. Kanye's album is pretty good two, while the bottom two are not good at all in my opinion.

1- Forever Changes
2- Hunky Dory
3- Zen Arcade
4- Natty Dread
Forever Changes is incredible. Top to bottom this bracket it solid though.

1- Blue
2- Superunknown
3- Sound of Silver
4- Surrealistic Pillow
Another great bracket, all four of these are 4 stars or better in my book. A year ago I wouldn't have liked this bracket nearly as much, but Blue has grown on me a lot, and I've grown to like Sound of Silver a lot as well.

1- The Doors
2- Led Zeppelin II
3- Post
4- Moon Safari
Top 3 are very solid here too, while Moon Safari is an enigma to me.

Night at the Opera
College Dropout
Homework
Blue Lines

All these are close together in my Top 200.

Forever Changes
Hunky Dory
Zen Arcade
Natty Dread

Only Forever Changes stands out here

Superunknown
Sound of Silver
Blue
Surrealistic Pillow

This is the first group to have an album in my Top 10.

The Doors
Post
Led Zeppelin II
Moon Safari

I don't hate Moon Safari, but I find it an anomaly on AM's list.

What is it with these fourth brackets? For the second week in a row, it is easily the strongest for me. As far as my rankings, 1 and 2 are all time favorites; I really like 3-14; Soundgarden is okay; and "Homework" is one of the reasons I was so surprised at just how much I loved "Random Access Memories."

Sadly Random Access Memories will not be one of the Daft Punk albums in this game.

1. Daft Punk | Homework (#29)
2. Kanye West | The College Dropout (#30)
3. Queen | A Night at the Opera (#47)
4. Massive Attack | Blue Lines

Hurts to put Daft Punk above Kanye, but I have to be honest. Three near-masterpieces. Blue Lines I don't like.

1. Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread (#53)
2. David Bowie | Hunky Dory (#97)
3. Love | Forever Changes
4. Hüsker Dü | Zen Arcade

Again two near-masterpieces. Next six albums I just don't like at all; I won't rank the third group.

158 | Daft Punk | Homework
123 | Queen | A Night at the Opera
38 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines
204 | Kanye West | The College Dropout

Daft Punk's first album has been unmatched by their successors - still rating very high. I have never been a huge Queen fan, but this album is by far their best. Massive Attack's first album sounds far too soul to me now, I'm much keener to their later records. Kanye West... never caught to the hype.

50 | Love | Forever Changes
165 | Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread
66 | David Bowie | Hunky Dory
208 | Hüsker Dü | Zen Arcade

Love wins this one easily - Natty Dread, Hunky Dory are not the best of their respective artists and therefore bow to Arthur Lee's opus. I have great respect for Husker Du's influence on some of my favorite bands....but Zen Arcade doesn't do it for me.

256 | Soundgarden | Superunknown
120 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
173 | Jefferson Airplane | Surrealistic Pillow
51 | Joni Mitchell | Blue

Soundgarden's best album and one of my top 50. "Spoonman" is one hell of a song.

Superunknown is not officially the 1000th album in AM I have listened from start to finish (though I probably heard a dozen more, there are 1000 I am now 100% positive I did).
Only 2 big favorite this month, but nothing I really dislike either.

1) 204 | Kanye West | The College Dropout (#5 of all time )
4) 123 | Queen | A Night at the Opera (206 of all time)
8) 38 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines (C )
12) 158 | Daft Punk | Homework (C- )
I still like Homework better than RAM though...

5) 165 | Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread (C+ )
9) 66 | David Bowie | Hunky Dory (C )
10) 50 | Love | Forever Changes (C- )
15) 208 | Hüsker Dü | Zen Arcade (D )
I'll go with spiritualized on Zen Arcade, wished I like it more !

2) 120 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver (#10 of all time )
6) 256 | Soundgarden | Superunknown (C+ )
11) 173 | Jefferson Airplane | Surrealistic Pillow (C- )
14) 51 | Joni Mitchell | Blue (D+ )
LCD Soundsystem is quite possibly my favorite band of the new millenium so easy pick.
Superunknown would be a great 10 song albums, if it had lost the fat (including Spoonman) it would be a contender for my top 500 but draging a bit too long make it miss it.
Joni Mitchell doesn't work for me, but if I have to listen to one of her albums, let it be Blue.

3) 232 | Björk | Post (155 of all time )
7) 27 | The Doors | The Doors (C )
13) 74 | Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II (C )
16) 139 | Air | Moon Safari (D )
A bit of a mystery why Led Zeppelin II is more acclaimed than I and III (well, I guess III don't innovate that much, but I is much better to my ears anyways I look at it).

Last bracket's vote for me

27 | The Doors | The Doors
139 | Air | Moon Safari
74 | Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II
232 | Björk | Post

The Doors' status as outright classic is still standing against its opposition here. And to know that I hated the band in my youth because of the lack of a bass player...How wrong was I ?
Air's Moon Safari is brilliant - it's mellow, melodious and a joy to listen to
I agree with Nassim's question as to the ranking of II...bizarre
"Post" has not aged so well I find, with a bit of filler - there are some great songs in there though....

Nine really great albums this week, been terrific going back over some old favourites and discovering new ones. Much better selection than week 1 on the whole.

7 | Queen | A Night At the Opera
9 | Kanye West | The College Dropout
10 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines
13 | Daft Punk | Homework
Not much between the top two, Blue Lines and Homework still solid though.

1 | Love | Forever Changes
3 | David Bowie | Hunky Dory
14 | Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread
16 | Husker Du | Zen Arcade
Love the top 2, Natty Dread is good but not Marley's best. Maybe Zen Arcade will grow on me but for now not so much.

2 | Joni Mitchell | Blue
4 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
8 | Jefferson Airplane | Surrealistic Pillow
15 | Soundgarden | Superunknown
Big gap between top 3 and Superunknown as I'm not much of a grunge fan.

5 | The Doors | The Doors
6 | Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II
11 | Bjork | Post
12 | Air | Moon Safari
Fond of all of these, The Doors is just an amazing record.

Re: Bracketology 4 Albums Edition: Round 1, Week 2

Post by GucciLittlePiggy »

This is all I can manage this week, and probably about as much as I'll be able to manage in the coming weeks as I've (happily) been spending most of my time tending to my newborn daughter. :romance-kisscheek:

204 | Kanye West | The College Dropout (#15 all-time)
38 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines (#287)
123 | Queen | A Night at the Opera
158 | Daft Punk | Homework

Kanye destroys this bracket with one of my all-time favorite records, rap or otherwise. The songs on this album feature some of the best soul-influenced beats in history, and he has a very distinctive and confident voice, which, for me, makes nearly all of his rhymes sound great, despite sometimes being lackluster on paper. And I nearly allowed Queen's opus to overtake Blue Lines for second place, though the existence of "Unfinished Sympathy" on the latter was enough to push it above the former (side note: I think "Death on Two Legs" may be even better than "Bohemian Rhapsody". How is it not on AM?!). And I'm still shocked to see Homework as the highest ranked Daft Punk album on AM. I think it's good but not top 200 good and certainly not better than their two masterpieces.

232 | Björk | Post (#142)
27 | The Doors | The Doors (#361)
139 | Air | Moon Safari
74 | Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II

Björk is an artist I've been recently getting into, who hasn't disappointed me yet with any of her work. Post is my current favorite of her records, but I've still got more to explore. I considered placing Moon Safari above The Doors because it has some incredibly beautiful moments, but it's not as consistent as the latter. And I've always been a big fan of many Zeppelin songs but not as much of their albums altogether (exception being IV), so that's why II ends up at the bottom here, despite featuring "Whole Lotta Love", "Heartbreaker", and "Living Loving Maid".

1. Kanye West | The College Dropout
2. Queen | A Night at the Opera
3. Daft Punk | Homework
4. Massive Attack | Blue Lines

Kanye’s debut is only my third favorite album of his, but it’s an easy #1 here. Nothing else even comes close.

1. Love | Forever Changes
2. David Bowie | Hunky Dory
3. Hüsker Dü | Zen Arcade
4. Bob Marley and The Wailers | Natty Dread

#2 and #3 would have both won either the first or fourth brackets this week, but they have the extreme misfortune of coming up against one of my all-time top ten albums.

1. Joni Mitchell | Blue
2. LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
3. Jefferson Airplane | Surrealistic Pillow
4. Soundgarden | Superunknown

I love all four of these, but Joni’s masterpiece is still a relatively easy choice.

1. The Doors | The Doors
2. Led Zeppelin | Led Zeppelin II
3. Air | Moon Safari
4. Björk | Post

As is often the case with me in these tournaments, the music I grew up with still outweighs the “newer” stuff here (although #3 and #4 are both well over 15 years old at this point – Moon Safari is now four years older than LZ II was when I first bought it, and if that doesn’t make a guy feel old, nothing will).

This probably will be one of the most disappointing results for me, as well, since "Forever Changes" is my favorite album of the sixties. It's sad to see if go out in the first round. (Though it sure was close. I noticed that even Honorio, who was happy with the results, had "Forever Changes" as his #2 overall for the week. It's too bad it had to be in the same bracket as "Hunky Dory.")
