On a related note, back in the day I ran a "favorite guitarists" poll on the old forum. Would anyone be interested in participating if I did one of those again?

Not only that, but a "favorite guitar solo" poll would be pretty awesome too.

Good idea, although it's hard to compare rock guitar to classical, jazz and flamenco. I would participate.

I object to Seven Nation Army. That's the most hackneyed riff that has ruined every major sporting event for the last decade.

I kind of feel that way about Smoke on the Water. Not because of any sporting events of course, but it seems to me that everytime some slightly drunken old men talk about their favorite music someone rowdily intones the opening riff. It has been deeply imprinted into my brain before I even listenened to the actual song. Because of this I have never been able to listen to it objectively and I have to admit that I even actively dislike it. It has just become this huge hard rock cliché for me.

Yes, the riff of "Smoke on the Water" has become a cliché because all beginning guitarists try to play it, usually in a simplified version without the parallel quarters. :music-guitarred:
