Neil Young - Freedom (1989)
Score: 1039 points
Biggest fans:
Miguel (#3), Andre (#14), otisredding (#19), Rocky Raccoon (#22), Nicolas (#22)
Comments:
Strange album. Good songs, nothing to throw away, none of them excellent except for the last one, the electric version of "Rocking In The Free World", a true masterpiece. The reason for that is the production : NY has no clear idea about it, and the songs suffer from it, some of them sounding dated, some of them sounding like back in the seventies, some of them like what he was about to do next with Crazy Horse. Too bad, because with a proper sound, that album could have been much bigger.

Sophisti-pop at its best. And that’s not only because of the polished arrangements courtesy of Thomas Dolby but mainly for the superb song-writing of Paddy McAloon. Bruce wanted something less dark for his third album and so he mixed happy stuff and darker songs. Maybe that's why you get the impression that it is two records (Nicolas)
The splendid double album of Springsteen is also probably his more personal effort, dealing with the conflictive relationship with his father on “Independence Day” and reflecting the real story of his sister told from the point of view of his brother-in-law on the title track. Comments:
A classic. Here again, 9 potential singles, and so many memories. I was 12 or 13 when this one came out and let me tell you, it was HUGE… (Nicolas)
Much more than "the best selling album of all time", Thriller is a manual of great production in pop music. These songs probably wouldn't become good in the hands of the majority of the other producers, but here they were took exactly to the right point, and from normal compositions, were born atemporal recordings. (Toni)
The best selling album ever deserves for sure to be in the top 10. There are enough evidences throughout the album to support that: the stronger set of songs on Jackson career, the wide range of styles displayed, the crossover appeal capable to satisfy both the most exigent critic and the casual listener and, of course, the meticulous production of Quincy Jones. “A precious pile of junk”, that’s the way Roger Roca described the album for Rockdelux. Eight classics and two other personal favorites in a 13-track album. How many discs contain that? People can say the Stone Roses's debut was the birth of the ninities, the album that "saved" English rock, etc. That's no important, I only know this is a fucking great bunch of perfect gems in all of the senses! Funny, because although the songs and the samples are really great, I think this record has not aged very well compared to "It Takes A Nation". That said, it is the definitive conscious rap record, paving the way for a lot of others. (Nicolas)
De La Soul celebrated the first decade of hip hop with an album that simultaneously supposed one of the peaks of the genre and its main revitalization, pulling away the many clichés that it was piling up during its relatively brief existence. The humour, the fun, the sense of freedom that exudes with every word and with every sample was enough. (Honorio)

Comments:
One of the few perfect double albums in the history of pop music. Every song could be a single. (Nicolas)
After years helping to develop the '80s style of pop-funk, Prince abandoned all the commercial interests to make an all timeless album. From minimalistic (Sign O' the Times) to the most grandiloquent (The Cross), he showed 16 different ways of making grove based on all the black music styles (and other genres either!). Lighter (Adore) or sexiest than never (Slow Love) R&B; enchanting romantic pop (Starfish and Coffee); flerts with jazz (The Ballad of Dorothy Parker) and with hip hop (Housequake); funk of primer quality (It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, Srange Relationship); dancing guitar-synthesizer pop (I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man); and also the already known Prince's style of music (U Got the Look). Delightful. (Toni)

Score: 1799 points

Comments:
Although a lot of his fans prefer 1999, I agree with AM that Purple Rain us Prince's best album. Why ? Because it is his most consistent and cohesive album, with this pop-funk crossover that became his signature. Because of its intensity (just check out the first song), and because of the title track and "When Doves Cry". (Nicolas)
Prince's Thriller (a much more freak one, for sure). Not his best album, but still an incredible collection of inspired songs which, don't know why, give me always a scientific fiction movie climate while listening to it, although I have never watched the real "Purple Rain" film, and have no idea of what its about. (Toni)
Prince went straight to the top with “Purple Rain”, following the successful path he was traveling with “1999”. He approached to classic rock (he built his own stairway to heaven with the title track) gaining a massive audience mainly white. But in fact he continued doing the best black music possible, solidly founded on funk and soul. (Honorio)

Indie rock can’t get better. The loud-quiet-loud dynamics, the noisy guitars and the bizarre lyrical themes (mutilation, bleeding, “Un chien andalou”) were still here, but the band showed in their second full-length album a complete command for pop hooks, with special mention to Kim Deal, to her melodic bass lines and to her delicious backing vocals.

A great rock'n roll album in the middle of these freezing eighties. Of course, it is excessive, but exuberance is the essence of rock'n roll. Rock'n roll has nothing to do with intergrity, it's just fun, and they know that. (Nicolas)

The most colorful piece of Elvis's six-first-albums sequence. Comments:
Melodies, harmonies, bassline, vocal interpretation, textures, climates and, of course, Squire's guitars filling everything.
