Best of the B-Sides: Round 1 Week 6

Post by BleuPanda »

Note: the previous week is still open for a few more hours; I just needed to get this topic up now.

The rules are simple: rank the songs in each set of 4 from best to worst. First gets 4 points, last gets 1. The top two will move on to the next round. The deadline to vote is Thursday, March 24th at 8 P.M. CST.

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home: "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew: "Sanctuary"
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run: "She's the One"
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue: "Freddie Freeloader"

Blondie - Parallel Lines: "Pretty Baby"
Radiohead - In Rainbows: "Videotape"
Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul: "Satisfaction"
Radiohead - The Bends: "Planet Telex"

R.E.M. - Automatic for the People: "Ignoreland"
Radiohead - OK Computer: "Climbing Up the Walls"
Talking Heads - Remain in Light: "The Great Curve"
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: "Lost in the World"

Nirvana - Nevermind: "Lounge Act"
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers: "You Gotta Move"
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon: "Brain Damage"
The Beatles - Revolver: "Love You To"

1. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run: "She's the One"
2. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home: "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"
3. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue: "Freddie Freeloader"
4. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew: "Sanctuary"

1. Radiohead - In Rainbows: "Videotape"
2. Radiohead - The Bends: "Planet Telex"
3. Blondie - Parallel Lines: "Pretty Baby"
4. Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul: "Satisfaction"

1. Radiohead - OK Computer: "Climbing Up the Walls"
2. Talking Heads - Remain in Light: "The Great Curve"
3. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: "Lost in the World"
4. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People: "Ignoreland"

1. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon: "Brain Damage"
2. Nirvana - Nevermind: "Lounge Act"
3. The Beatles - Revolver: "Love You To"
4. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers: "You Gotta Move"

Toughest choice: the two Radiohead songs in the second bracket. One of the greatest opening tracks of all time vs. one of the greatest closing tracks of all time.

Question re: "Brain Damage": are we including "Eclipse," or is the nomination just for "Brain Damage" itself (i.e., up to the synth break)? Wouldn't change my #1 vote - just curious.

BleuPanda, I thought you were going to move one of the Radiohead and Miles Davis songs into different brackets to make it more even?

7. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue: "Freddie Freeloader"
11. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew: "Sanctuary"
13. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home: "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"
15. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run: "She's the One"

One of the worst brackets in the whole tournament for me.

1. Radiohead - In Rainbows: "Videotape"
2. Radiohead - The Bends: "Planet Telex"
9. Blondie - Parallel Lines: "Pretty Baby"
12. Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul: "Satisfaction"

Radiohead dominates.

3. Radiohead - OK Computer: "Climbing Up the Walls"
6. Talking Heads - Remain in Light: "The Great Curve"
8. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People: "Ignoreland"
10. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: "Lost in the World"

Probably the most even bracket in the week, and the only one where i can say i enjoy all the songs but once again Radiohead easily wins.

4. Nirvana - Nevermind: "Lounge Act"
5. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon: "Brain Damage"
14. The Beatles - Revolver: "Love You To"
16. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers: "You Gotta Move"

Top 2 are great while the rolling stones track is my least favourite of the tournament so far

She's the One
Freddie Freeloader
Sanctuary
Bob Dylan's 115th Dream
Springsteen's track runs circles around this group. The two Miles Davis tracks remind me that I need to relisten to some of his albums, while the Dylan track is one of two on that album I don't like (it's a top 5 album of mine).

Satisfaction
Plantet Telex
Pretty Baby
Videotape
I love Otis' version of "Satisfaction".

The Great Curve
Lost in the World
Climbing Up the Walls
Ignoreland
Fuck, the three best songs this week (save "Satisfaction"...maybe) are in the group. "The Great Curve" is a clear top dog, while the 2&3 slots were pretty close. Even "Ignoreland" could have grabbed a 2nd place in some of these groups.

Love You To
Lounge Act
Brain Damage
You Gotta Move
"You Gotta Move" might be the worst track on an album I have in my top 50. Definitely the worst of any album in my top 10, though.

Freddie Freeloader
Sanctuary
She's the One
Bob Dylan's 115th Dream

Did they really include Bob cracking up on the final tape?

Videotape
Pretty Baby
Satisfaction
Planet Telex

In Rainbows' best track wins here.

Climbing Up the Walls
The Great Curve
Lost in the World
Ignoreland

Stacked. The winner of this group could very well win it all. It helps that Climbing up the Walls is exactly the track I would have picked from OK Computer.

Brain Damage
Love you To
Lounge Act
You Gotta Move

"Brain Damage" is a classic. Surprised it's not on AM. It just works as a great track and, paired with "Eclipse", the perfect album closer.

But Yeah, Bleu. At the very least, I would have swapped one of the Miles songs with one of the Radiohead songs.

9. The Beatles - Revolver: "Love You To"
11. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon: "Brain Damage"
15. Nirvana - Nevermind: "Lounge Act"

Note: the (relatively) high positions on the Hip Hop songs on my list this week (and the next weeks) are not related with recent events, it just happen that these song come from my all-time favourite Hip Hop albums, " My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," "3 Feet High and Rising" and "Endtroducing....." (plus "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," I already put the song from that album high on my list).

Radiohead - The Bends: "Planet Telex"
Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul: "Satisfaction"
Blondie - Parallel Lines: "Pretty Baby"
Radiohead - In Rainbows: "Videotape"

Radiohead - OK Computer: "Climbing Up the Walls"
Talking Heads - Remain in Light: "The Great Curve"
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: "Lost in the World"
R.E.M. - Automatic for the People: "Ignoreland"

Great bracket. I'd have picked Airbag from OK Computer but Climbing Up The Walls is another favorite.
If it was an album game, I'd ranked MBDTF hundreds places above Remain In Light, but the Great Curve is probably the best track in this album. Lost in the World is one of Kanye's boldest songs (musically) so it feels bad putting it 3rd, but the competition is tough. Ignoreland is pretty great too but a good notch below the others.

Nirvana - Nevermind: "Lounge Act"
The Beatles - Revolver: "Love You To"
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon: "Brain Damage"
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers: "You Gotta Move"

I guess I'd have picked something else from Nirvana, but I can imagine Lounge Act standing more chances than Breed or Territorial Pissings. Anyway, don't care much for the other 3.

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run: "She's the One"
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue: "Freddie Freeloader"
Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home: "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"

Possibly my least favorite Bob Dylan song. Miles and The Boss are stellar as always.

Blondie - Parallel Lines: "Pretty Baby"
Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul: "Satisfaction"
Radiohead - The Bends: "Planet Telex"

Radiohead - OK Computer: "Climbing Up the Walls"
Talking Heads - Remain in Light: "The Great Curve"

Three great songs, but no match for "Lost in the World," my all-time favorite song for the last six years.

The Beatles - Revolver: "Love You To"
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers: "You Gotta Move"
Nirvana - Nevermind: "Lounge Act"
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon: "Brain Damage"
