MCCh 2016 (06) April 15

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2016 (update April 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating and the number of reviews (out of 30 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; LesInrocks; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spin; Tinymixtapes

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, Gaffa.dk, Gaffa.se, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, etc…

Love the high placement of Sturgill Simpson. Great talent. More Indie-Alt-Country than straight Country though don't you think? Nonetheless a terrific album!

Haven't listened to any Sturgill but that album has one of the most gorgeous covers I've seen. Definitely piques my interest.

For that matter, Tim Hecker's latest has a wonderful cover, as well. Hopefully, the high praise it's gotten will be enough to spur me to listen to an artist that's been on my to-do list for a long time.

And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror

I hope the fact include the musical style does not begin to be a problem.

Allmusic says:
Genre: Country
Styles: American; Contemporary Country; Neo-Traditionalist Country; Outlaw Country

AOTY says: Alt-Country; Country

Just a note, Otis - your highlighted songs for the Moderat album appears to be your listing for the Bonnie Raitt album ;)

Yo Otis, keep the musical style listed on your lists. We might not agree on the technical classifications of such but I like the idea of being able to try some new music based on the genres that I'm attracted to. (btw: love what you and Setherex do on this forum!)

Totally with you Rdwbob... With the time available to me, there is no way I can listen to all the new entries every week. With the genres, it helps me hone in on my particular preferred genres.

We just need to know that Otis does not genre-ify the albums, the critics do !

Just want to join the chorus and say that the genres and tracks are great additions to the chart - there's always going to be debate and the odd mistake (for the record, I think putting down Sturgill as 'Country' is more than fair enough - its certainly not Hip Hop or Death Metal is it?!)

I don't think I have ever said thanks for putting this together, Otis - i check it every two weeks, religiously, and it is where i find a lot of great music, so - THANK YOU!!
